Some Music You Should Hear

And it’s time for a record round up. All of the following are heartily recommended, and if you can’t trust your old pal Nazz, then all hope is lost!

The New Rochelles: “It’s New” - The second or third or fifteenth coming of the Ramones. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.  12 songs in 14 minutes. They cop every important aspect of Duh Brudders (same surnames, snappy toonage, whacked out song subjects) without the annoying stuff (oh wait a minute, there is no annoying stuff when it comes to The Ramones !!!!!).  Fuckin’ A!

M.O.T.O:  Pack Your Troubles In Dreams   - Thanks to Brushback at “One Base On An Overthrow for reminding me how good this band is. 30 year vets of the lo-fi garage-punk scene.  Funnier than a hemorrhage and the songs stick to you like ebola. Or something. Pick hits: “Satan Always Calls Collect”, “Radio Wall of Phlegm” and “Dance Dance Dance Dance To The Radio”.

The Okmoniks – Party Fever!!! – Cheesy keyboards, hot chick singing. Pure pop for now people. Kinda like the Mummies mate with The Muffs;  but not really. Especially since there's only one girl in The Muffs, besides, how would that work... I mean with The Mummies wrappings and everything? Extra points because I think they named their band after the neighbors in ALF.

The Dwarves – The Dwarves Are Born Again: The band that wouldn't die. Advice of the day: “Let’s Get High And Fuck Some Sluts”. It’s The Dwarves. Nuff said.

Flip City – Demo’s: Elvis Costello’s band when he was still Joey Goldstein (or whatever his real name is.) Sorta like Springsteen, if the boss had no delusions of grandeur and was born in the UK. Interesting to listen to as it has early versions of “Radio Radio” (“Radio Soul”) and “Living In Paradise”

In The Flesh?

I am contemplating seeing the Roger Waters "The Wall" show as it is in my town in the next week. I have seen all varieties of Pink Floyd post 1980 and loved em all. As much as I am a Pink Floyd freak, and as much as a spectacle it will be, I am reluctant to part with the $$$ (nosebleeds start at $75 and times are tough). I missed seeing The Wall back in the last century, when the real Pink Floyd (Waters/Gilmour/Mason/Wright) toured it on it's initial run because I didn't have the $15 that the tickets cost. I regret that, and I will regret not seeing it this time around if I can't find a cheap ducat.

Times change, but they don't really, do they?

Embarking on a different course, I am posting up some songs that came on at random this morn. There should be enough diversity here that ya'll should download em all.

Have at em.

Toonage:
Thin Lizzy - Cowboy Song
The Dwarves - Lesbian Nun
Jerry Garcia - Waiting For A Miracle
Superchunk - Slack Motherfucker
Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels - I Got You (I Feel Good)

We Never Learn- The Gunk Punk Undergut 1988-2001

What would YOU call the punk music scene of the late 80's through the new millenium? This period was largely underground; as the original wave's of old school (Ramones, Dead Boys, Clash), college (Husker Du, Replacements), and hardcore (Bad Brains, Black Flag) had either self-imploded or been destroyed by outside pressures. The original garage punk scene was fizzling. Grunge was gearing up, hair metal was thankfully starting to die and rap was omnipresent.

What were all the mutants to do?

Eric Davidson, lead singer of the uber awesome NEW BOMB TURKS has written the definitive history of the descendants of the time between the original hopes of punk and the emergence of the New School bands like Rancid and Green Day with We Never Learn- The Punk Gunk Undergut, 1988-2001.

The Dwarves make this site not safe for work

Davidson lived through the time and his band, along with such reprobates as The Mummies, The Gories, The Dwarves, Supersuckers and a million other bands; crisscrossed the USA, Europe and even the Far East; inflicting their alcoholic three chord furnace blasts of the rawk. The songs were rude, the players (and crowd) were wasted and the music was loud and nasty.

That's the blueprint for rock n roll.

The New Bomb Turks in Las Vegas 2000

We survived many of these shows during that time. For me and my buddies, we were past the point of thinking that being drunk was a novelty or that it was "cool". No- we drank because we had to- it was part of our fabric. Same thing with vicious rock n roll. We were there because we had to be! And that's the feeling that we got from these bands as well. They played and drank because that's what they had to do.
It wasn't really a "scene" and from my alcoholic memories, it didn't seem that there were an cliques- it was just a revolving series of fucked up people and fucked up bands.

That is... fucked up people and fucked up bands that could rock the shit out of you.

The Mummies in a pensive moment 1991

The strengths of We Never Learn are in the writing- Davidson is an expert on the subject and either part of most events or knew the people responsible. The book flashes from interviews to recollections to conventional historical prose. The book reads similarly to The Replacements history "All Over But The Shouting", where the "close to the action" stories also flesh out the story.

This book fits on your shelf right next to American Hardcore and Our Band Could Be Your Life.

Oh yeah, if you buy the book, you get a link to download a cd's worth of classic toonage from the bands in the book. 20 songs- and I only owned one of 'em beforehand. So you can melt the wallpaper whilst you read.

Whaddya waitin' for????

Veneratio Thy Matris

"Well, you came into this world naked,
screaming and covered in blood
who was there to wipe you off and give you your first hug?
And it took a couple years to figure out how to not shit in your pants
but someone was there to clean you up and powder off your rash"

With Mother's Day around the corner, Bleedin Out takes time to honor the women who's wombs we sprung forth from. Musta been nice in there, all warm and wet and safe.

And leave a comment! Your mom would want you to!
