TrollfesT - Brumlebassen

Genre: Black/Folk
Country: Norway
Year: 2012

1. Brumlebassen
2. Böse Tivoli
3. Illsint
4. Hevlette
5. Finsken, Norsken And Presten

8. TrinkenTroll
9. Verboten Kjærleik
10. Bråk
11. Sellout
12. Rundt Bålet
13. Konterbier

5th album by TrollfesT. The crazy balkan/black metallers are offering us lunatic tunes of balkan melodies mixed with black metal chaos. The songwriting is tight and fun, nothing lasts longer than it should and it’s actually technical and interesting to listen to.

Krampus - Survival Of The Fittest

Genre: Folk/Death
Country: Italy
Year: 2012

1. Arise (The Day Of Reckoning)
2. Beast Within
3. Unspoken
4. Rebirth
5. Aftermath
6. The Bride
7. Redemption
8. The Dance Of Lies
9. Kronos’ Heritage
10. Shadows Of Our Time
11. Tears Of Stone
12. The Season Of Revenge

Debut album by Krampus. It contains 4 older songs (found in their 2 earlier brilliant 'Eps) and 8 new one. The point is that comparing to their earlier songs, the band decided to follow a musical path reminding Eluveitie a lot, loosing by that way, their unique identity. It is a solid, catchy album, with clean vocals inserted and with their older compositions shining.

Korpiklaani - Manala

Genre: Folk/Heavy
Country: Finland
Year: 2012

1. Kunnia
2. Tuonelan Tuvilla

5. Petoeläimen Kuola
6. Synkkä

8. Husky-Sledge
9. Dolorous
10. Uni
11. Metsälle
12. Sumussa Hämärän Aamun

8th album by Korpiklaani. Lyrically, the album deals with the underworld (Manala) and as a result, the sound of the album is a bit darker than on their previous records. The first half of the record is what we would expect from the band, thrashy, riff-filled, accordion-laced, polka tunes guaranteed. The second half changes the mood significantly and the songs that follow are a bit darker and gloomier than previous material from the band.

5. Sentenced In Absentia
6. Final Perfection

2nd album by Altar Of Oblivion. 5 tracks and 1 instrumental clocking around 35 minutes of epic heavy/doom, deeply influenced by Candlemass and Mercyful Fate. Meister's voice has a character and drives the material’s ability to emotionally connect with the listener. The riff work is quite traditional and without much flash.

11. Love Machine (W.A.S.P. cover)

3rd album by Those Who Bring The Torture. This is their more melodic release and the band has totally stayed away from their D-Beat/grindcore roots of their earlier days. They have slowed down, more groovy mid-tempos in the mix and a lot of melodic parts involved.

4. The Mad Arab
5. My Demon
6. Time
7. The Preacher
8. Lady In Black
9. Mirror
10. The Afterlife
11. Castillo Del Mortes

4th album by Mercyful Fate. The songs are very memorable and almost have a groovy twist in them thanks to the killer rhythm section. Musically, we got a lot more experimentation here than usual, but it works out great. This album is a little less ferocious than previous releases and maybe even a little more commercial-sounding at times.

6. Final Revelation
7. Cenotaph

9. Rebirth Of Humanity
10. Afterlife

3rd album by Bolt Thrower, that puts them in the pure death metal fields. The music is quite fast and the riffs are crushing, heavy and tightly-played, while retaining atmosphere. Karl Willetts' vocals are just as destructive, than on the first two records. One of the more surprising improvements on this album was the solos.

2nd album by F.U.B.A.R., 7 years after their debut and some split 'eps. Short, crisp, concise, 22 tracks in less than half an hour of grinding hardcore, with a lot of tempo changes and slam parts. Growls, screams, rare clean parts alternate in the frenzied pace and this time the band managed to get a proper sound that fits them well

2nd album by Slavebreed. This time they are flirting more with the hardcore/crust side, than the death one. Great grindcore songs, crystal clear production, nice performance by all the members and a great experimental song (Sailing The Styx).

7. Man Kills Mankind
8. Throne Of Thorns
9. Last Stand For Independence

10th album by Testament, 4 years after their last one, with Gene Hoglan behind the kit, replacing Paul Bostaph. The result is a much more melodic affair than 'The Formation of Damnation'. It is their attempt to go one step closer to their older sound by bringing in even more melody. The production was helmed by Andy Sneap and the result is a big, powerful and loud sound.

Wardog - Scorched Earth

Genre: Speed/Heavy
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1996

2. Sounds Of War
3. Broken But Not Dead
4. Seeing Is Believing
5. Nothing Left
6. Killing Speed
7. Bucket 'O' Beer
8. Cuz
9. Tomb Of The Slain
10. Beast Of Damnation
11. Damned

2nd album by Wardog. Tom Gatis and Chris Catero are delivering some very guitar-oriented songs, greatly inspired by the '80s, but with modern sound. The guitar really stands out with excellent highly technical pounding riffs and solos throughout the album. Great vocal delivery by Gatis and the drumming is very potent and very effective as well, a relentless, fast, rhythmic pounding that keeps you locked into the album.

3. Cast Out
4. Portrait Of Despair
5. Black Lit Knights
6. The Manic's Mask
7. Legend
8. Walking Fire
9. Speed Of Sound

2nd album by Liege Lord. While this effort lacks some of it’s predecessor’s charm, it does certainly continue their mark of quality. The style is not a huge departure from 'Freedom's Rise', but there is a darker element here and slight changes like the replacement of guitarist Pete McCarthy with Paul Nelson and vocalist Andy Michaud's performance that simply improved.

4. Detox
5. Home Nucleonics
6. AAA
7. Underneath The Waves
8. Room 429 (Cop Shoot Cop cover)

2nd album by Strapping Young Lad. Frontman Devin Townsend assembled a permanent lineup to record this album, including legendary Gene Hoglan, along with Townsend’s former bandmates Jed Simon on guitar and Byron Stroud on bass. The technical proficiency of each band member is amazing, to say the least. The riffs are killer and barely ever slow down enough.

20. The Professional League 21. Old And Tired? 22. Words To Die For 23. Riot
24. The Meaningless Trial 25. Sometimes Dead Is Better

2nd album by Nasum. In spite of inclusion of more melodious presentation of their sounds with a considerably higher groove factor than their previous outing, it is still a very brutal, savage album. The production of the album is extremely well done. The technical riffing and the interchange between hard grinding noise and groovy death metal sound is also well done.

2nd album by Oz. Here we have catchy and energetic heavy metal of the old school style, similar to some NWOBHM bands. This disc never lets up, not throughout it's whole 27 minute runtime, that it's impossible to find a single moment of boredom. The hand on the cover is that of Quorthon!!!

6. Not One Day Dead (But One Day Mad)
7. Son Of A Fridge
8. Fandom At Random
9. Metal Magnolia
10. Running On Fumes

15th album by Tankard. The music itself is quite well composed here, boasting superb production and strong enough variation to survive a good number of replays. The band inserted more melodies and elements of traditional heavy metal, a thing that made the whole album easily listenable and not over-boring. The album starts off strong and slowly began to fade into a softer tone keeping things still intense.

Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta I : Fathers Of The Icy Age

Genre: Black

3. Sons Of Wisdom, Master Of Elements
4. The Forsaken Voices Of The Ghostwood’s Shadowy Realm
5. The Territory Of Witches/Guardians Of The Dark Lake
6. Day Of Revenge (The Impure Blood Of Theirs)
7. Fathers Of The Icy Age

2nd album by Blut Aus Nord. On here they're building on essentially an Immortal/Burzum inspired sound, with a couple hints of viking-era Bathory lurking. There is less use of clean vocals, guitars and keyboards than on the debut, but they're better placed and used to great effect. Epic tones are heard throughout, yet the songs never strecth out to what seems like forever.

3rd album by Misery Index. The overall sound of the album is very powerful and has a lot more death metal than grindcore in most of the songs. The band delivers 11 anthems of rebellion and disgust with the current state of things, backed by some of the most scathing anti-government, anti-religion and anti political lyrics ever written.

11. The Day Of The Undead

Debut album by Denial Fiend, featuring metal legends Kam Lee (Massacre, Death), Terry Butler (Massacre, Death, Six Feet Under), Curtis Beeson (Nasty Savage) and punk guitarist Sam Williams (Down By Law, Pseudo Heros). The album glorifies horror films, while playing a refreshing and original sound combining early death metal and horror punk. It completely avoids the modern ways of today's music. There are no gravity beats, slammy riffs, pointless breakdowns and it's not over-technical.

Split album by two representatives of the british crossover/thrash, Lawnmower Deth and Metal Duck. This was for both bands their very first official release. Very primitive crossover filled with thrash elements and humour, that parodies death and thrash metal. The production sucks a bit, but the whole result worths some listens.

Edge Of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow

Genre: Progr. Death/Hard Rock
Country: Sweden

3. Blood-Colored
4. Silent
5. Black Tears
6. Elegy
7. Velvet Dreams
8. Enter Chaos
9. The Sinner And The Sadness
10. Song Of Sirens

4th album by Edge Of Sanity. The band initially wanted to release 2 separate EP's: ''Purgatory''; the more traditional death metal oriented songs and ''Afterglow''; the experimental/hard rock songs. Swano's songwriting refuses to compromise stylistically, as he was deeply influenced by 70's and 80's prog rock. The album  contains just enough of aggression, prog and catchiness to make all the songs on the album memorable.

3rd album by Destroyer 666. On this one the band left out their past epic tendencies in favor of full on thrashy attack with razor edged thrash/death riffs with the occasional black-ish metal tremolo riffs. It's an actually well-produced collection of brilliant riff after brilliant riff, underscored by great drumwork and packed into distinctive songs.

2nd album by The Prophecy 23. Groovier than their previous album and with the addition of death metal growls (including pig squeels!!). A nice mix of thrash and crossover with a very good production, with lots of power, but yet a clean modern sound with just the right amount of roughness to it.

Debut album by Vio-Lence, featuring the first steps of Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel, both in Machine Head. It is highly regarded in almost every thrash circle alive and rightfully so. 3. Irreversible
4. Terra Incognita

6. Chamaelicon Bizarre
7. The New Acid Bath
8. Jythand

The 3rd album by Tristwood, featuring Mastic Scum's vocalist and ex-members of December and Dawn Of Dreams, was sent to me by the band itself. This entire record just doesn't ever slow down, most of it being an brutal slab of guttural growls, blast-beats and fast tremolo riffing. The industrial aspect of this record is used very sparingly and it's effective. It's a simple formula done very right. Amazing!
