Atrophy - Violent By Nature

Genre: Thrash
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1990

1. Puppies And Friends
2. Violent By Nature
3. In Their Eyes
4. Too Late To Change
5. Slipped Through The Cracks
6. Forgotten But Not Gone
7. Process Of Elimination
8. Right To Die
9. Things Change

Atrophy's 2nd and last album follows in the very same track as "Socialized Hate", socially conscious thrash, that is not too adventurous or experimental. The basic thrash elements are the same here, but there are a few twists, more melody, while keeping the aggressiveness intact and more fast passages. The band's playing has matured, but they've done so while retaining the little raw, basic playing style of the debut.

9. Misery Path
10. The Sign From The North Side

Debut album by Amorphis, featuring very good melodic death basically, full of growly vocals, good riffs and solid rhythm section. Sounds a bit ahead of its time, especially with production. The main feature here is the guitar, which churns out a multitude of chunky, melodic and hypnotic riffage that definitely leans toward death metal of a rather epic, doom, mystical variety.

8. In A White Page
9. Touching The Void

3rd album by Hedon Cries. A completely self released record, that has to give us a lot. Great, atmospheric death metal combined with some doom and, rarely, black metal elements. Over 9 tracks, Hedon Cries unleashes a constant flurry of mournful melodies underpinned by an aggressive swedish death metal vibe, which uplifts the dreary gothic atmosphere.

Debut album by Alchemist. With a vast array of ideas and unrivalled imagination, Alchemist’s intentions for their 1st studio album would in theory have made for a staggering debut. Unfortunately, a multitude of constraints meant that the quality of it was compromised virtually from the outset and the result, as humbly admitted by the band themselves was a mixed bag. Nevertheless, it was clearly showed what would come up in the future, progressive death metal with psychedelic passages and jazzy rhythms.

4th album by Ghoul, a band that is featuring some members of Impaled and they are costumed characters like Gwar or Lordi. For the most part the album tends to be more of a straightforward thrash album when compared to the previous Ghoul releases. An astonishing Ep by Undergång. They are offering us 10 songs that clock around 11 minutes, so you can easily imagine that whatever they do, they do it fast. Old fashioned, speedy hardcore with thrashy moments that makes the whole result moving into the limits of crossover.

12. Lepra

3rd album by Skitsystem. This is a wall of noise that last for a little over 30 minutes, fast old-fashioned crustcore along the lines of Avskum, Disfear, Totalitär. While paying homage to their predecessors, they still manage to forge a unique and intense sound, a barrage of distorted mayhem both complex and straightforward. This LP takes one step deeper into the dark realm that Skitystem has created.

9. Inside The Inn

Debut album by Skull Branded Pirates. What we have here is an excellent example of power metal influenced heavy metal. As you would expect the lyrics and vocals are firmly berthed in a nautical theme, with the vocalist reminding amazingly Martin Walkyier. This is clearly a fun album, but one made by a crew who take what they do very seriously.

Gang Green - I Fear 'Ep

Genre: Crossover/Punk
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 2011

1. I Fear
2. The Other Place

Gang Green the ''King Of Bands'' are back after 14 years of silence with 2 new songs. Chris Doherty (vocals, guitars) has by his side Walter Gustafson (drums), Mike Earls (guitars) and Matt Sandonato (bass). The 1st song runs a totally slow paced tempo, largely revolving around a rolling tom drum beat, a simple riff and a repeated crew vocal delivery. The 2nd one is a little more up beat, but again, it's ruled by a very rocky, 80's metal lead.

1. Saga Of Temudgin
2. Onon River
3. Khagan

A powerful and involving Ep by Darkestrah. There are similarities here to Graveland or even Moonsorrow at their most epic, but Darkestrah really blaze their own trail. Epic, but restrained keyboards, quiet passages, melodic folk-sprinkling and the nasty scolding from frontwoman Kriegtalith.

2nd album by Iron Maiden. This album is the last with vocalist Paul Di'Anno and it also marks the arrival of Adrian Smith in guitars. 4. Gates Of Valhalla
5. Hatred
6. Revelation (Death's Angel)
7. March For Revenge (By Soldiers Of Death)

2nd album by Manowar. They actually managed to top their debut album, showing us a slightly different sound than on the first one. Gone are most of the simple heavy tunes, that made way for a more epic and occasionally very doomy-style of songwriting. Eric Adams' performance is far more operatic and refined for this album.

9. Breaking Up Again
10. Down And Out

3rd album by Accept. There are hints of Judas Priest throughout and AC/DC, but overall they don't come off as sounding derivative at all. Udo's wails are as high and raw as ever and the guitarwork of Wolf Hoffman is catchy as hell. It's a very consistent album, without any songs that stand out as weak.

Skyclad's 2nd album saw the inclusion of a full time fiddle player Fritha Jenkins which saw a greatly increased folk influence in their music. 20. Mentally Murdered 21. Sometimes 22. Make Way!

2nd album by Napalm Death. This was the last record with Lee Dorian and Bill Steer in the line-up. The instrumental performances are better and the production is a substantial step up from the rehearsal room atmosphere of the band’s debut. The fundamental importance of this album is that it’s perhaps the most definite, clear, pure first grindcore album ever made. Short and immediate songs with sped up crust/thrash riffs, ripping growls and screams and blasting, chaotic drumwork.

4. Step By Step
5. Twisted Into Form
6. R.I.P.
7. Spiral Depression
8. Tossed Away
9. One Foot In Hell

Forbidden's second release took a step into a lot heavier and more controlled direction. This album is close in quality to their amazing debut album and has its own flavour by placing more of an emphasis on musicianship than on speed. The general tone is dark and classy and the music is less flashy than their debut.

2nd album by Flotsam And Jetsam. Jason Newsted departed for Metallica. It has a lot more serious tone than their debut. It also has almost a melancholic feel while it remains reasonably fast and thrashy. The vocals sound now more stylish and convincing.

Hammers Of Misfortune - 17th Street

Genre: Progr. Heavy
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 2011

1. 317
2. 17th Street
3. The Grain
4. Staring (The 31st Floor)
5. The Day The City Died
6. Romance Valley
7. Summer Tears
8. Grey Wednesday
9. Going Somewhere

The 5th album by Hammers Of Misfortune continues with the band’s defiantly original blend of metal. With a newly-rejuvenated line-up and their signature sound intact, they have returned with a brash song cycle, blending the best elements of NWOBHM, thrash, doom metal and american folk music while somehow sounding unlike any of these. New vocalist Joe Hutton adds something fresh to the band with his distinctive vocals and the use of piano/keys are much more present.

Testament - The Legacy

Genre: Thrash
Country: U.S.A.

5. C.O.T.L.O.D.
6. First Strike Is Deadly
7. Do Or Die
8. Alone In The Dark
9. Apocalyptic City

Debut album by Testament. It was quite a polished effort in its time and one of the better debut albums ever. The songs are full of solid, memorable riffs and creative solos and although the music is basically straightforward and very energetic thrash metal with a strong attitude, there are lots of fine touches in it.

Dismember - Massive Killing Capacity

Genre: Death
Country: Sweden
Year: 1995

1. I Saw Them Die
2. Massive Killing Capacity
3. On Frozen Fields
4. Crime Divine
5. To The Bone
6. Wardead
7. Hallucigenia
8. Collection By Blood
9. Casket Garden
10. Nenia
11. Life – Another Shape Of Sorrow

3rd album by Dismember. It shows off more of their mid-paced songs and is packed with memorable riffs. It is not the most intense Dismember album, but it shows the band attempting to expand their sound, adding in even more melody and attempting a different manner of conveying their message of death and doom. This record is, certainly, the most depressing of their career, bathing the listener in hopelessness and despair, in their own unique way.

King Diamond - Fatal Portrait

Genre: Heavy
Country: Denmark
Year: 1986

1. The Candle
2. The Jonah
3. The Portrait
4. Dressed In White
5. Charon
6. Lurking In The Dark
7. Halloween
8. Voices From The Past
9. Haunted

Debut album by King Diamond. After the dissolve of Mercyful Fate, King DIamond was followed into this new project by Michael Denner and Timi Hansen, so the trio already had an extremely solid foundation to work with, made complete with the addition of budding newcomers Andy la Rocque and Mikkey Dee. Musically, you could say that this album picks up right where Mercyful Fate’s "Don’t Break the Oath" left off.

4. Rabid Wolves In Sheep’s Clothing
5. Your Loyal Betrayer
6. The Coming
7. The Nothing
8. Bleeding Structure
9. Cleansing Hands.

2nd album by As You Drown. They have produced a solid modern death metal album, which really delivers an intense 40 minutes of crushing power and obliteration. The album is apparently themed around the medieval German folk phenomena of rat kings and their association with plagues that ravaged Europe.

The Cleansing - Feeding The Inevitable

Genre: Techn. Brutal Death
Country: Denmark
Year: 2011

1. The Promethean Promise
2. Third Eye Starring
3. Your Flesh, Your Curse
4. A Cheating Progression
5. Hour Of Decadence
6. Processed For Contamination
7. Law Of Reciprocity
8. Two Days
9. Crossroads

2nd album by The Cleansing, featuring ex members of Usipian, Iniquity and Panzerchrist. The sound is a burly, chunky and low end rumbling style of death metal that’s part european and part american. The band seems to be a little more focused on a more technical, vicious tone rather than purely relying on groove.

The trio of Nag, Draugluin and Anti Christian deliver 8 blazingly fast songs in just under the 40 minute mark here.

3. For Whom The Bell Tolls
4. Fade To Black
5. Trapped Under Ice

2nd album by Metallica. It is their most beautiful moment and nearly a perfect album in every sense of the word. It contains all of the fully-formed elements of the greatest acts of the thrash/speed metal generation. The solos are ripping, the riffs demand immediate headbanging and there are about 4-5 tempo shifts in the whole songs.
