Elias Grandy

From 2015 to 2023 German conductor Elias Grandy has been music director of Heidelberg’s Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra, where he significantly raised the caliber of both, providing thoughtful and innovative programming while burnishing the city’s fast-growing reputation as a vital musical hub. At the same time he has rapidly raised his international profile by conducting first-class orchestras mainly in Europe, America and Asia.

He has been praised for his “passionate, spirited" interpretations of operatic and orchestral repertoire, for his ability to grasp “psychological subtleties” that enrich his music-making and for his extraordinary “precision and musical depth.”

Grandy is a regular guest with Frankfurt Opera and Frankfurt Radio Orchestra as well as the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra and the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra. The 2022-23 season’s debuts included Mahler’s First Symphony with the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony with the Vienna Symphony, and his first appearances with Utah Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra. In opera he conducted Werther at Frankfurt Opera, Un Ballo in Maschera at the Aalto-Theater in Essen and Rusalka at Portland Opera. In his last season in Heidelberg he conducted The Love for Three Oranges, Tales of Hoffmann and a concert season with an emphasis on female composers.

The 2023-24 season will see  Grandy return to the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony,  Yomiuri Nippon Symphony and German National Youth Orchestra; guest engagements with Orchestra Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken and Norwegian Radio Orchestra; and his debut at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. Furthermore, he was invited by the Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie Chemnitz as conductor in residence for the 2023-24 season.

Born in Munich, Elias Grandy studied cello and conducting in Munich, Basel and Berlin. He worked as a cellist in orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Komische Oper Berlin. In 2012 he started as a conductor in Darmstadt and was invited to become music director in Heidelberg in 2015, the same year he won the prestigious Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition.
