Op een natte novemberdag brachten we met onze tuinclub een bezoek aan museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar. Wat we te zien kregen, overtrof mijn stoutste verwachtingen. Zoals de brochure vermeldt is het een beleving van kunst, natuur en architectuur ineen. De prachtige natuur van landgoed Voorlinden omringt het moderne gebouw dat in alle opzichten dienend is aan de kunst. De langwerpige vorm bestaat uit natuursteen- en glaswanden waardoor de natuurbeleving als het ware ook binnenkomt.
De tuin rondom het museum is ontworpen door Piet Oudolf en heel het jaar interessant om te zien door de vormen en structuren van de planten. Zoals je ziet, ziet het er zelfs goed uit op een druilerige dag diep in de herfst.
On a wet day in November we paid a visit with our gardenclub to Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar. What we got to see exceeded my wildest expectations. As the brochure mentions it is an experience of art, nature and architecture together. The modern building that serves the art in every respect is surrounded by the beautiful nature of estate Voorlinden. The elongated shape of the building consists of natural stone and glasswalls through which the experience of nature is, as it were, inside.
The garden around the museum is a design of Piet Oudold and the whole year round interesting to watch by the shapes and stuctures of the plants. As you see, it also looks good on a drizzly day deep in autumn.
In het museum is een uitgebreide collectie hedendaagse en moderne kunst te vinden. Er zijn tijdelijke tentoonstellingen maar er staan ook permanente kunstwerken, zoals deze vijf cilindervormige scultpuren van massief glas. Ik dacht dat ze 4500 kg. per stuk wegen. De buitenkant ziet er mat en ijsachtig uit. De bovenkant daarentegen is volledig transparant en glad als een wateroppervlak. In het oeuvre van de kunstenares Roni Horn is water een allesbepalend gegeven, water is voortdurend in beweging.
In the museum you can find an extensive collection of contemporary and modern art. There are temporary exhibitions but there are also permanent works of art as these five cylindrical sculptures of solid glass. As I remember well they have a weight of 4500 kg. each. The outside looks frosty. On the other hand the top is completely transparent and smooth as a water surface. Water is the all-determining factor in the oeuvre of artist Roni Horn, because water is always moving.
Het overweldigende uitzicht naar buiten maakt indruk en roept verwondering op bij onze tuindames.

Dacht ik eerst een groep aalscholvers te zien vliegen......
Het kunstwerk Black Kites van Arturo Hernández Alcázar uit Mexico is gemaakt van stenen, vuilniszakken, nylon en touw. Elke zwarte 'vlieger' is met een touwtje vastgebonden aan een steen, zo vormen ze samen een zwarte, onheilspellende wolk. De kunstenaar verwijst met dit kunstwerk naar vogels als slechte voortekenen.
I first thought to see a group of cormorants fly.....
'Black Kites' made by Arturo Hernández Alcázar from Mexico are made of stones, trash bags, nylon and string. Each black kite is tied to a stone with a string and together they form a black ominous cloud. With this piece of art the artist refers to birds as bad omens.

Voor ons als plantenliefhebbers was er toevallig ook een bijzonder toepasselijke tijdelijke tentoonstelling van het kunstenaarsechtpaar Shio Kusaka en Jonas Wood. Zij wonen en werken al ruim 10 jaar in Los Angeles. Zij is keramist, geboren in Morioka, Japan en hij is een Amerikaanse schilder uit Boston. Shio en Jonas werken vanuit hun persoonlijke herinneringen en gezamenlijke geschiedenis. Deze tentoonstelling is een ontdekkingsreis door de kleurrijke, eclectische wereld van de twee kunstenaars waarin het onderscheid tussen high art en low art is verdwenen.
Een belangrijk terugkerend motief in Jonas' werk is de keramiek van zijn vrouw Shio. In het schilderij worden weergaves van haar elegant bewerkte potten afgewisseld met gewone terracottapotten.
A major recurring motif in Jonas' oeuvre it the ceramic of his wife Shio. In above painting displays of her elegantly crafted pots are alternated with ordinary terracotta pots.

Dit schilderij 'Backyard Snowscape' van Jonas Wood sprak erg tot mijn verbeelding en vond ik een van de mooiste van de tentoonstelling. Maakte een paar interessante close-ups.
This painting 'Backyard Snowscape' of Jonas Wood really appealed to my imagination and I thought was one of the most beautiful of the exhibition. Made a few interesting close-ups.

Op de voorgrond van het schilderij een prachtige collectie keramiek van Shio Kusaka.

Voordat we het museum verlieten kregen we de gelegenheid een kijkje te nemen in de gigantische bibliotheek. De ruimte is van plint tot plafond gevuld met ongeveer 40.000 boeken over de kunstenaars in hun collectie. Hier hadden ze me wel een poosje achter kunnen laten.......
Before we left the museum we had the opportunity to have a look in the giant library. The space is filled from plinth to ceiling with approx. 40.000 books about the artists in their collection.
They could have left me here for a while......
Jullie begrijpen dat dit slechts een impressie is van al wat wij gezien hebben, maar ik stel voor, voor wie de gelegenheid daartoe heeft, zelf eens te gaan kijken. En......reserveer dan gelijk voor een rondleiding dan gaat het pas echt leven.
Het buitengebeuren, het 40 ha tellende landgoed met rondom het museum de Piet Oudolf tuin, het parklandschap aangelegd naar ontwerp van J. Zocher Sr. en later gereorganiseerd door L. Springer en dan de duinen op de achtergrond, is voor iedere natuurliefhebber een uitnodiging om een prachtige wandeling te maken. Als je op het hoogste duin staat, zie je de zee. Dat is er die dag niet meer van gekomen maar ik ga terug dat is zeker.
You understand that this is only an impression of all we have seen, but if you have a chance I recommend you wholeheartidly to go there yourself to discover the beauty of culture and nature together. Don't forget to reserve a tour inside for than the art really starts to live.
The outside, the estate of 40 hectares with the Piet Oudolf garden around the museum, the park old park designed by our famous J. Zocher Sr. and later reorganized by L. Springer and then the dunes on the background, is for every nature lover an invitation for a beautiful walk. When you are on the top of the dunes, you can see the sea.
Well, we did not come to a walk that day but I shall go back, that 's for sure.
Wij gingen lunchen in het landhuis op landgoed Voorlinden. Het landhuis werd in 1912 in Engelse stijl gebouwd naar ontwerp van de Engelse architect Johnston voor de toenmalige eigenaar jhr. Hugo Loudon.
Een waardige afsluiting van al weer een geweldige tuinclub dag.
We enjoyed our lunch in the country house of the estate. The country house was built in 1912 in English style to the design of the English architect Johnston for jhr. Hugo Loudon, the owner at that time.
A worthy end of another great garden club day.
