BOLLEN EN EEN BESCHILDERD EI - BULBS AND A PAINTED EGG

Deze week de laatste 100 gemengde tulpenbollen gepoot en de hyacinten op de glazen gezet. De hyacinten bollen staan nu in een donkere hoek in de kelder totdat ze in het nieuwe jaar gaan uitlopen.
Ik vind het altijd zo leuk om het nieuwe jaar met eigen voorgetrokken bollen te beginnen.

This week I planted the last 100 mixed tulips and put the hyacinths on their glasses. They are now in a dark corner of the basement until they are sprouting in the new year. It's always a joy to start the new year with own grown bulbs.

Toen ik in de kelder kwam, fladderde daar een dagpauwoog en ging toen onder de lamp op de muur zitten.  Even een foto gemaakt en daarna heb ik hem voorzichtig buiten gezet.

When I came into the basement, there was a peacock butterfly fluttering below the lamp and sat down on the wall. After the photo I put the butterfly carefully outside. 

Nog meer vlinders.  Gisteravond kwam ik thuis van een dagje 's Hertogenbosch, waar we met onze tuinclub de tentoonstelling Botanische Kunst in het Noordbrabants Museum bezochten.  Op tafel lag een pakje met vlinderpapier op me te wachten.  In het pakje zat het beschilderde ei dat ik bij Yolanda van www.komachterom.blogspot.nl besteld had. Dat is snel, maandag besteld, woensdag in huis. Bedankt voor de snelle levering en de goede verpakking Yolanda.

Het beschilderde ganzenei is een Sinterklaascadeautje voor mijn moeder van 94 in het verzorgingshuis. Ze vieren daar Sinterklaasfeest met kleine cadeautjes en omdat zij gek op roodborstjes is, geeft Sinterklaas haar dit ei.  Ik zal het dadelijk weer voorzichtig inpakken, er nog een Sinterklaaspapiertje omheen doen en dan kan het ingeleverd worden bij Sinterklaas.  Het feest wordt eind deze maand gehouden en natuurlijk ga ik dat met ze mee vieren.

More butterflies. After visiting the exhibition of Botanical Art in the noordbrabants museum in 's Hertogenbosch with our garden club, I came home last night and found a parcel on the table wrapped in butterfly paper. In the parcel was the painted egg I ordered at Yolanda of www.komachterom.blogspot.nl. That's quick, ordered on Monday, in the house on Wednesday. Thank you for the quick delivery and the safe packing Yolanda.

The painted goose egg is a St.Nicholas gift for my 94 years old mother in the nursinghome. They have a St. Nicholas party with small presents and because she loves robins, St.Nicholas gives her this beautiful egg.  I will carefully pack it again and then it will be delivered to St. Nicholas.  The party is end of this month and of course I will be there to celebrate it with the elderly.

SNEEUWKLOKJES, LENTEKLOKJES, ZOMERKLOKJES - FROM SNOWDROP TO SUMMER SNOWFLAKE.

- Leucojum vernum -

Er is al weer een week om. Het was heerlijk weer om in de tuin te werken en dan wil ik ook doorgaan, maar helaas het lijkt wel des te ouder ik word, des te meer onderbrekingen er op mijn weg komen. Is allemaal niet erg hoor, vaak ook leuk zelfs, maar als je een tuin hebt, dan heb je een tuin.

Uiteindelijk was ik alleen dinsdag en donderdag in de tuin te vinden, oude stengels afknippen, blad opruimen en vooral rozen snoeien, nee ik ben nog lang niet klaar.......

Ondertussen genoot ik van al het gene wat al bloeit, maar vandaag speelt het lenteklokje de hoofdrol.

Another week has gone.  Concerning the weather it was a great gardening week and then I want to go on and on, but unfortunately it seems the more older I get, the more interruptions come on my way. It does not really mind, often fun, but when you have a garden, you have a garden, if you understand what I mean.
In the end I was only on Tuesday and Thursday in the garden to cleanup and particularly pruning roses, no I am far from finished......
In the meantime I enjoyed all the early spring flowers, but today the spring snowflake plays the lead.

- Galanthus nivalis - 

Sneeuwklokjes, lenteklokjes, zomerklokjes, zo te zien zijn er dus verschillende witte klokjes, te beginnen met de sneeuwklokjes en al haar variëteiten. Zodra die ongeveer uitgebloeid zijn komen de lenteklokjes (Leucojum vernum) aan de beurt.
Het lenteklokje is een ware voorbode van de lente, na de bloei van het lenteklokje krijgen we in april namelijk de bloei van het zomerklokje (Leucojum aestivum).  Let op, hier worden we even op het verkeerde been gezet, het lenteklokje bloeit aan het einde van de winter en het zomerklokje bloeit in de lente.

Snowdrops, spring snowflakes, summer snowflakes, as you can see there are different snow whites, to start with the snowdrops and all her varieties.  As soon as they have finished the spring snowflakes (Leucojum vernum) are on turn.
The spring snowflake is a true harbinger of spring, after blooming of the spring snowflakes, the summer snowflakes (Leucojum aestivum) are in the starting blocks to show their flowers in April.
Attention, here we are put on the wrong track, the spring snowflake blooms late winter and the summer snowflake blooms in spring.

Het lenteklokje is een oud siergewas en moet als sinds 1420 als zodanig bekend zijn want het werd al genoemd in het Cruydeboeck van Dodonaeus. Van nature komt het lenteklokje voor in midden Europa en van daaruit is het verspreid. Het lenteklokje werd dikwijls aangeplant op buitenplaatsen in Friesland, Groningen en langs de Vecht. Hier verwilderde de plant en ging vervolgens als stinzenplant tot de Nederlandse flora behoren.  Ook zien we het lenteklokje soms in parken en tuinen, toch blijft het daar een vrij zeldzame verschijning.

Het lenteklokje is een bolgewas uit de narcisfamilie. Bloeiend lijkt het op een sneeuwklokje, maar het heeft veel bredere klokvormige bloemen die als lantaarntjes tussen de groene bladeren te voorschijn komen. Wanneer het lenteklokje de bloembladeren opent, zijn op de punten van elk bloemblaadje zachtgroene vlekken te zien.

The spring snowflake is an old ornamental flower and known as such since 1420, because it's mentioned in the old Cruydeboeck of Dodnaeus.  Naturally the spring snowflake is found in the middle of Europe and from there distributed over Europe.  It was often planted on estates in Friesland, Groningen and along the Vecht.  Here it became a wild plant belonging to the Dutch flora.  We also see the spring snowflake sometimes in parks and gardens, yet it remains a rather rare appearance. 

The spring snowflake is a bulbous plant from the daffodil family.  Blooming it looks like a snowdrop, but with much wider bell-shaped flowers emerging as lanterns among the green leaves.  When the spring snowflake opens the petals, you see at the point of each petal a pale green spot.

En dit worden de volgende, de zomerklokjes die over een maand gaan bloeien.  Hiervan heb ik er heel veel en kan ik naar hartelust plukken, zoals je ziet op een foto van vorig jaar.

And this will be next, the summer snowflakes flowering in a month.  As you see on above picture of last year, I have many of them so that I can pick to my heart's content.

DE EERSTE KROKUS OP GLAS - FIRST CROCUS ON GLASS

De eerste week van januari had ik de bollenglazen al uit de donkere kelder gehaald, maar nog niet direct in de warmte gezet.  Eerst in de kas, daarna in de serre en nu is het begin van de bloei daar. Ik heb enkele heel kleine bollenglaasjes waar krokusbolletjes in passen.  De eerste witte krokus met vage lila streepjes is tot bloei gekomen.

First week of January I took the bulbglasses out of the dark basement, but I did not yet put them in direct warmth.  First in the cold greenhouse (it was not freezing), then in the conservatory and now the beginning of flowering time is there. I have some tiny bulbglasses fitted for crocus bulbs.  The first white crocus with a faint purple venation is blooming now.

De blauwe schaal op de achtergrond heb ik in december van mijn jongste dochter gekregen. Het is het eerste gelukte pottenbakkers werkstuk dat zij op de cursus bij Cock Keramiek in Bergschenhoek heeft gemaakt. Ik ben trots op haar prachtige resultaat en er bijzonder blij mee.

The blue dish on the background I got as a present from my youngest daughter in December.  It was her first successful pottery work she made on the class she follows at Cock Pottery at Bergschenhoek.  I am proud of her beautiful result and very happy with it.

Ik ga niets vertellen over herkomst, herfst-, winter- en lentebloeiende krokussoorten, en het kweken hiervan. Dit staat o.a. allemaal in de boeken van E.A. Bowles (1865-1954).  Bowles was een Britse tuinbouwkundige die een belangrijke tuin ontwikkelde bij zijn ouderlijk huis, Myddleton House in Enfield. Er zijn vele variëteiten van planten naar hem genoemd en hij heeft ook een aantal boeken op zijn naam staan, waarvan 'My Garden in Spring', 'My Garden in Summer' en 'My Garden in Autumn and Winter' heel bekend zijn. Ze dateren uit 1914 en 1915, maar blijven voor de liefhebber interessant.  In 1924 schreef hij een gespecialiseerd boek over krokussen en in 1934 over narcissen, met eigen illustraties.

I am not going to describe the origin and culturing of autumn, winter and spring flowering crocus varieties, this is a.o. all written in the books of E.A. Bowles (18985-1954).  Bowles was a British horticulturist, who developed an important garden at his home, Myddleton House in Enfield. His name is preserved in many varieties of plants and he has written a number of books of which 'The Garden in Spring', the Garden in Summer' and 'The Garden in Autumn and Winter'  are well known. These three books were published in 1914 and 1915 but still interesting for enthusiasts.  I have new editions of them. In 1924 he wrote a specialized book on crocuses and in 1934 on narcissi, with own illustrations.

APRIL IN DE TUIN - APRIL IN THE GARDEN

We hebben er bijna weer een drukke tuinmaand opzitten.  Alle voorjaarsbloemen en bollen bloeien nu dat het een lieve lust is. Op de hoek voor het huis staat de pruimenboom eindelijk in bloei, 3 weken later dan vorig jaar. De blauwe druifjes waarvan ik dacht dat ze, op een enkele in het grint na, niet meer zouden bloeien, zijn gewoon weer opgestaan en bloeien volop tussen de zachtgele narcissen.

The busy gardening month of April has almost finished.  All spring flowering plants and bulbs are blooming delightful.  At the corner in front of the house the plum tree is in full bloom, 3 weeks later than last year.  The blue grape hyacinths of which I thought, most of them had disappeared, are resurrected and show many lovely  little blue grapes. They combine nicely with the pale yellow colours of the daffodils.

Ook de Erythronium tuolumnense 'Pagoda' oftewel de hondstand, bloeit weer. Deze staan graag op een licht beschaduwde plek bij bomen of heesters.

The Erythronium tuolumnense 'Pagoda'  has come to life too. These plants like a slightly shaded spot under trees and shrubs.

In de kas was heel wat te doen deze maand, weer heel veel zaailingen verspeend o.a.van Lobelia's, Zinnia's, Tithonia's, Cosmea's, Dianthussen, Paprika's en sla. Op de bovenste 2 rijen van de stelling staan mijn Primula auricula's, waarvan enkele al beginnen te bloeien.

A lot to do in the greenhouse this month, transplanting seedlings again as Lobelias, Zinnias, Tithonias, Cosmeas, Carnations, Peppers and Lettuce.  On the top two rows you see my Primula auriculas, of which some start to flower.

Overal in de tuin bloeien nog groepen narcissen en de vergeet-mij-nietjes hebben zich zoals gewoonlijk weer overal tussen uitgezaaid. 

 Daffodils are still flowering in the garden and the Forget-me-nots have sown themselves as usual between the plants.  They are everywhere but always blend beautifully.

 De Amelanchier lamarckii, het krentenboompje staat ook in bloei. Deze heester zou ik niet willen missen, in het voorjaar voor de subtiele witte bloemen waarna zich blauwe besjes vormen, waar de vogels gek op zijn. In het najaar krijgt het blad een prachtige oranjerode herfstkleur.  Ik heb een gelukje dat de struik nog leeft. Ze staat op een erg vochtige plek, niet zo geschikt voor de Amelanchier. Twee jaar geleden heb ik haar tot de grond toe afgezaagd omdat takken bemost waren en afstierven.  Ik dacht dat dat het einde van het krentenboompje zou zijn, maar het ziet er na 2 jaar weer goed uit en heeft flink wat mooie takken gemaakt.

The Amelanchier lamarckii is flowering too. I would not want to miss this shrub,  in spring for the subtle white flowers after which blue berries are formed, which are loved by the birds. The orange red foliage in autumn is a real gem for the garden.  I am lucky this shrub is still alive.  The Amelanchier is on a very wet spot not very suitable for this shrub which likes a sandy soil.  Two years ago I cut her down to the ground because branches were mossy and died.  I thought that is the end of the Amelanchier but to our surprise she looks good after two years and made a lot of new branches which are flowering again.

Nog een lekker klusje was het inzaaien van nieuw gras aan één kant van Snarf's renbaan. Vorig jaar had ik het toch al hobbelige graspad omgespit om er groenten te verbouwen. Het was leuk, maar voor het mooi en het gemak heb ik er toch weer gras van gemaakt. Om toch wat groenten uit de tuin te kunnen pakken, heb ik nog een andere plekje achter de garage. Met een loodzware ijzeren rol heb ik de grond platgewalst die hier nog tegen de stam van de Abies staat geparkeerd.  Door een paar mooie warme dagen en besproeiing is het gras binnen 10 dagen opgekomen.

Another good job was sowing new grass on one side of Snarf's race course.  Last year I dug the already bumpy grass path to grow veggies. It was fun, but for beauty and ease I sowed grass again. To have some vegetables from the garden I still have another spot behind the garage to grow for instance beans.  With a heavy iron roll which until now is parked against the Abies I flattened the soil.  With help of some nice warm days and watering the new grass is already there within 10 days.

Ook de Magnolia's en Camellia's bloeien nu volop. 

The Magnolias and Camellias are in full bloom now.

Hieronder een nog kleine Magnolia Black Tulip. Bijna niet te geloven dat deze over 10 jaar ook een flinke struik zal zijn.

Below the Magnolia Black Tulip which is only planted two years ago.  I almost cannot beleive this one will be a huge shrub too in about 10 years.

F. heeft me vandaag geholpen met het schoonmaken van het mini-vijvertje waar ik ooit nog eens een waterornament wil hebben en hij heeft ook de bestrating overal schoongemaakt, dat maakte me super blij. En zie wie daar klaar ligt op het gras om te spelen: Snarf, die naar mijn man is genoemd maar dan omgekeerd.

F. helped me today cleaning the mini-pond where one day I shall have a water-ornament, and he also cleaned the pavement everywhere. That made me very happy. And see who is on the grass ready to play:  Snarf, named after my husband but in the other way round.

De viooltjes die een maand geleden nog in de kas stonden, zijn inmiddels naar de tuintafel verhuisd.

The pansies which were in the greenhouse for a month have been moved to the gardentable in the meantime.

HET VOORJAAR LAAT ZICH ZIEN - SPRING SHOWS.

Met horten en stoten is de temperatuur afgelopen week omhoog gegaan naar normale waarden in deze tijd van het jaar.  En wat een vreugde we hebben ook wat regen gekregen, onmisbaar voor de groei, het gedijen van alle leven op aarde.  

We zien de tuin opfleuren, of beter gezegd groen worden, bloemen openen zich langzaam. De narcissen zijn dit jaar niet alleen veel later, het lijkt wel of er minder zijn, maar wat nog niet is kan nog wel komen.  

Toen ik op een morgen terugkwam van mijn vroege wandeling met Snarf, stond er langs het hek wel een bijzonder narcisje te bloeien, de Rip van Winkle.  Ik kan niet zeggen of ik deze zo mooi vind, in elk geval wel anders.  Het is al een oudje van voor 1884 en komt oorspronkelijk uit Ierland.  Het is een miniatuurtje met gevulde bloemen. Zowel trompetje als de kelkblaadjes zijn verdeeld in smalle stukjes.

Onder de bollenkwekers zijn de meningen verdeeld over dit narcisje, sommigen noemen het minachtend paardenbloemen, waar ze inderdaad iets van weg hebben.

By fits and starts temperature went up to normal values last week.  And what a joy, we also got some rain, indispensable for growth, the thrive of life on earth.

We see our gardens alive again, buds are opening slowly.  The Narcissus are not only late this year, it seems if I have less, but what is not there, may come lateron.  

When I returned one morning from my walk with Snarf, along the fence a characteristic daffodil was flowering, the Rip van Winkle.  I cannot say that I like this one very much, anyway it is different.  This Narcissus is a very old one, before 1884 and originates from Ireland.  It is a mini daffodil with filled flowers. The little trumpet as well as the sepals are separated in pieces.  Bulbgrowers have different opinions about this little Rip van Winkle, some call it disparaging dandelions, and yes in some or another way they look like dandelions.

De heester hierboven is een Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii', die voorzichtig begint uit te lopen. Deze Viburnum heeft al heel wat meegemaakt maar daar vertel ik over als hij in bloei staat.

The shrub on above picture is a Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii', starting to show leaves and buds.  This Viburnum has a long history in my garden, which I shall tell when it is flowering next month.

De Forsythia is ook afgelopen week tot bloei gekomen, bijzonder laat. Er wordt wel gezegd dat je de rozen kunt gaan snoeien als de Forsythia bloeit, dat klopt eigenlijk wel. Ik heb de meeste rozen echter al in maart gesnoeid, de laatste heb ik gisteren gedaan en de klimrozen weer netjes opgebonden.

At last the Forsythia started flowering last week, particularly late.  They say you can start pruning roses when the Forsythia flowers, that's right actually but I pruned almost all my roses in March, the last ones I did yesterday and tying up all my climbing roses.

Dit is een spruit van een boompioen, ondanks de vorst zitten er weer veel knoppen in.

This is a shoot of a tree peony, despite the long frost there are lots of flower buds.

Toen ik op het grindpad langs de vaart kwam, stonden er al enkele blauwe druifjes in het grind te bloeien, dit zijn zaailingen van de bolletjes die naast het pad staan.

When I walked on the gravel path along the canal there were already some blue Grape Hyacinths in the gravel flowering, these are seedlings of the bulbs, planted long ago along the path.

Tja en dan kom ik dit tegen, gistermiddag gestopt met het snoeien van dood hout uit de hortensia's en het ontdoen van de oude bloemen, dus ligt dit voor mijn neus.  Nog even verder op mijn inspectie ronde en dan weer aan de slag.

Yes, and then I see above mess, yesterday afternoon I had to stop suddenly cutting dead wood and deadheading the Hydrangeas. I have to hurry up my garden walk to go to work again.

Gelukkig beginnen de meeste rozen behoorlijk uit te lopen, dit is één van mijn ouderwetse rozen, Madame Legras de St. Germain, een prachtige witte. Het ziet er weer veelbelovend uit.

I feel so happy to see all those new shoots on my roses, above picture is of one of my historic roses, Madame Legras de St. Germain, a beautiful white flowering one.  It looks so promissing.

De Prunus ceracifera 'Nigra' is ook buitengewoon laat. Deze bloeit normaal eind februari, dit jaar begint hij voorzichtig op 10 april.

The Prunus ceracifera 'Nigra'  is extra-ordinary late too.  This tree flowers here normally end of February, this year it starts carefully on April 10th. 

Ik heb geen bijzondere Pulmonaria soorten in mijn tuin, alleen het gewone longkruid, ik vind het toch altijd weer mooi en ga er binnenkort  boeketjes voor op de schoorsteenmantel van maken.

I don't have special Pulmonaria cultivars in my garden, only the ordinary lungwort, I think it is very nice and one of these days I shall make small bouquets for on the mantelpiece.

Dit is de Corylopsis pauciflora met haar zachtgele bloemetjes.  Helaas lijkt het of deze heester na 24 jaar onze tuin opgefleurd te hebben, aan haar einde is.  Er zitten veel dode bemoste takken in.

Above is the Corylopsis pauciflora with soft yellow flowers.  It looks as if this shrub is at the end of her life after 24 happy years in my garden. There are lots of dead mossy branches in it.

De bosanemoontjes bloeien weer volop en bedekken op verschillende plekken in de tuin de grond.

The little wood anemones are in full bloom and cover the ground on several places in the garden.

Tot de werkzaamheden behoorden deze week ook het uitplanten in potjes van diverse zaailingen, o.a. Lobelia's 'Cambridge Blue', nog meer Delphiniums (ben gek van Delphiniums en kan er niet genoeg van hebben), tomaatjes, violen en lathyrus.  En komende weken zal er nog heel wat opgepot worden, want de serre tafel staat vol zaailingen.

Last week I did a lot of potting up in the greenhouse, Lobelias 'Cambridge Blue', more Delphiniums (I am mad with Delphiniums and can never have enough of them), tomatoes, pansies and sweet peas.  Coming weeks I have to pot up lots of more seedlings which are still on the table in the conservatory.

Langs het hek beginnen de Leucojum vernum, lente klokjes, ook te bloeien.  Daar ben ik blij mee. Andere jaren zijn de de Leucojum aestivum, de zomerklokjes deze altijd de baas.  De beide soorten staan langs het hek, maar de zomerklokjes worden veel hoger, tot wel 50 cm. en is een prachtige snijbloem, maar ze bloeien vaak gelijktijdig en overheersen dan het toch ook mooie lenteklokje.

Along the fence the Leucojum vernum, Spring Snowflakes, start flowering. I am very glad with them.  Other years the Leucojum aestivum, Summer Snowflakes, are always in charge.  Both varieties are along the fench, but the Summer Snowflakes grow bigger, till about 50 cm. and are beautiful cuttingflowers. These two, often are together in bloom at the same time and the Summer Snowflake predominates over the yet beautiful Spring Snowflake.
