Voor mij moet een tuin veel kleur en fleur bevatten maar wat zou een tuin zonder bladplanten zijn?
Over het algemeen gaan mijn verhaaltjes over de bloemen die bloeien in de tuin van de late winter tot de late herfst en de foto's tonen ook meestal de bloemen op zijn best. Vandaag wil ik het eens over de groene planten hebben, die onontbeerlijk zijn als aanvulling, ondersteuning en bodembedekkers voor al het bloeigeweld.
Sommige bladplanten hebben een bijzonder decoratieve waarde voor de tuin. Zij vullen lege plekken op en zijn gewoon mooi. De Acanthus is er één van. Deze plant heeft een klassieke traditie, want hij verschafte de Griekse architecten het motief voor het Corintische kapiteel op hun zuilen.
Er zijn verschillende Acanthus soorten, maar de acanthusvorm die de Grieken gebruikten moet van
Acanthus spinosus geweest zijn, welke donkergroene bladen heeft en een heel stekelige witviolette bloemaar, meer dan een halve meter hoog.
For me a garden should be colorful but what the garden would be without foliage plants?
I am generally talking about the flowers in the garden which are in bloom from late winter to late autumn and the pictures mostly show the flowers on their best. Today I will talk about the green plants, which are essential in addition, support and ground cover for all the flowering violence.
Some of the foliage plants hold a high decorative value in the garden. They fill up gaps and deserve to be called handsome. The Acanthus is one of them. This is a plant with a classical tradition, for it provided Greek architects with the design for the Corinthian capital to their columns. There are various Acanthus cultivars, but the form of acanthus they used must have been Acanthus spinosus, which has dark grean leaves and a most prickly spike of pale purple bracts, at least 50 cm high.

Vinca minor of maagdenpalm zijn uitstekende bodembedekkers en geschikt voor schaduwrijke plaatsen. Ik gebruik ze als onderbegroeiing bij Viburnums en Camellia's Bovenstaande foto is van de bekendste maagdenpalm die in mei met blauwe bloemen bloeit. Maar ook de Vinca minor 'Rubra' en Vinca minor 'Gertrude Jekyll' met witte bloemen staan in de tuin.
The different varieties of Vinca minor or periwinkle are excellent ground covers and suitable for shade. I use them as ground covers around Viburnums and Camellias. Above photo is of the well-known blue periwinkle flowering in May. But also the Vinca minor 'Rubra'and Vinca minor 'Gertrude Jekyll' with white flowers are in the garden.
Asplenium scolopendrium
Varens zijn onmisbaar in een vochtige, schaduwrijke tuin. Een tuingedeelte met verschillende vormen en kleuren varens geeft een verkwikkende koelte en straalt rust uit.
Ferns are invaluable in a moist and shady garden. One part of the garden with different forms and colours of green ferns gives a refreshing coolness and emanates tranquility.

De
Geranium endressii wordt na de hoofdbloei eind juli tot op de bodem teruggeknipt, nu heeft zich weer een prachtig groen tapijt gevormd met hier en daar wat nabloei.
The Geranium endressi has been cut back after flowering end of July, now it has formed a beautiful carpet with some new flowers.
Het groene blad van de
Helleborussen is ook een prima bodembedekker. Dit zijn prachtige vaste planten voor een schaduwrijke plek die in de late winter en vroeg in het voorjaar een ware bloemenshow tonen. Ze hebben wel tamelijk goede grond nodig en moeten bij droogte vochtig worden gehouden.
The green foliage of Hellebores is an excellent ground cover too. These are beautiful perennials for a shady spot and give a lovely show of flowers in late winter and early spring. They need fairly good soil and should be kept moist during a long dry period.
De
Pulmonaria officinalis of longkruid zou ik ook niet willen missen in de tuin. In het voorjaar de bloei en daarna vormt ze mooi nieuw blad wat het grootste gedeelte van het jaar blijft zitten.
The Pulmonaria officinalis or longworth I should not want to miss in the garden. In spring for the flowers and after flowering for the new formed foliage which remains the biggest part of the year.
Hosta's zijn de hele zomer door prachtige bodembedekkers, maar de bladeren van deze planten sterven in de herfst af en komen pas het volgend voorjaar weer terug. De grootbladige soorten zijn schitterende bodembedekkers voor in de schaduw, tussen groepen struiken, tussen mijn ouderwetse rozen en langs de waterkant. Als bodembedekker kunnen het best de soorten met de grootste bladeren worden gekozen, en de bladeren worden groter als de planten in de schaduw staan. Hosta's die niet beschut staan, blijven kleiner maar bloeien beter. De soorten met gevlekte bladeren of met bladeren met een witte rand staan mooi op donkere plaatsen, maar ze vullen niet zo'n groot vlak als sommige andere soorten. De bloemen zijn over het algemeen bleeklila van kleur. In de tuin staan echter ook twee goede witbloeiende soorten Hosta plantaginea 'Aphrodite' en Hosta 'Royal Standard'.
Hosta's hebben echter een nadeel, slakken zijn er dol op. Het zal dus heel vaak voorkomen dat er weinig moois overblijft, slechts skeletten of gaterige bladeren. Aangezien ik geen "middelen" gebruik, is het nu een waar gatenparadijs. Toch staan er nog genoeg onaangetaste Hosta's in de tuin, doordat de slakken bepaalde soorten niet lekker vinden en onze tuin een groot paddenbestand heeft en veel vogels ook een slakje niet versmaden.
Hostas are lovely groundcovers during summer, but in autumn they die back until next spring. The large-leaved species are the perfect groundcovers for in the shade, between shrubs or between my old fashioned roses and along the waterside. As groundcover you can best choose varieties with large leaves, the leaves grow bigger when plants are standing in a shady position. Hostas which are not in the shade of other plants, remain smaller but are flowering better. The species with spotted leaves or white bordered leaves show beautiful on dark places, but they don't fill such a big surface as some other varieties. The flowers are mainly pale-lilac, in the garden however, I have two good white flowering species, Hosta plantaginea 'Aphrodite' and 'Hosta 'Royal Standard'. Hostas have one disadvantage, snails are fond of the leaves too. So it will often happen that there remains nothing beautiful at all, only skeletons or leaves with holes. As I do not use chemicals in the garden, it is at the moment a real paradise of holes. Yet there are enough unaffected Hostas in the garden, snails do not like all Hosta species and our garden has a large population of toads and for many birds a snail is not to be despised.

Alchemilla mollis oftewel vrouwenmantel, een zeer dankbare bodembedekker of randplant. Ik gebruik deze op vele plaatsen. Ze krijgen dezelfde behandeling als de Geraniums, na de bloei tot op de bodem terugknippen en binnen enkele weken toont ze weer fris nieuw blad.
The Alchemilla mollis or lady's mantle, a very grateful groundcover or borderplant. I use this plant on many places. They get the same treatment as hardy Geraniums, after flowering cutting back to the bottom and within some weeks they show fresh new foliage.

Heuchera's zijn prachtige planten en er zijn heel veel soorten. Helaas doen ze het in mijn tuin niet zo goed.
Heucheras are beautiful perennials and there are many varieties. Unfortunately they are not growing well in my garden.
