DE TUIN EIND MAART - THE GARDEN END OF MARCH.

- Viburnum 'Bodnantense Dawn'

Het einde van de maand had nog een storm voor ons in petto. Vanmorgen op de wandeling met Snarf lagen in onze mini-bossen langs de Rotte heel wat bomen omgewaaid.  Er stond nog een straffe wind en een helm op ons hoofd zou geen overbodige luxe geweest zijn.  Het kraakte, steunde en piepte om ons heen, maar vooral boven ons.  Sommige bomen lagen met wortels en al om, de grond is hier altijd erg nat en de bomen hoog, het spreekwoord 'Hoge bomen vangen veel wind' is hier letterlijk van toepassing. 

Terug thuis in eigen tuin, probeerde ik wat foto's te maken van de vorderingen in de tuin, dat viel niet mee met die wind.  

- Magnolia stellata -

The end of the month had a storm in store for us.  There were quite a few trees blown down when I walked this morning with Snarf in our mini-woods along the river.  There still was a strong wind and a helmet on my head would have been handy.  It creaked and squealed around us, but especially above us.  Some trees were blown down with roots and all, soil is here always very wet and too fast growing trees too tall, the saying 'Tall trees catch much wind' is literally applicable here.

Back home in own garden, I tried to make some pictures of progress in the garden, which was not easy due to the wind. 

De Camellia hierboven, één met hardroze bloemen, is de laatste die nog in bloei moet komen, er zitten wel heel veel knoppen in.  Deze kregen we 26 jaar geleden van onze vrienden toen we hier kwamen wonen. Het was toen een klein struikje van ongeveer 0,70 m. en is nu uitgegroeid tot een heester van ongeveer 3 meter hoog. 

The above camellia, one with bright pink flowers , is the last one that has to come into bloom and is showing many buds.  We got this one as a small shrub of about 0,70 m. as a gift from our friends when we came to live here 26 years ago.  It has grown to a tall shrub of about 3 metres now.

De Helleborussen  bloeien onverdroten door maar het einde komt in zicht.  Sommige vertonen nog schitterende bloemen.  Namen van cultivars weet ik nauwelijks meer, al heb ik de soorten op naam wel genoteerd. Er zijn door de jaren heen zo veel, ook hele mooie, zaailingen bijgekomen.

Hellebores are blooming indefatigably, but the end is coming into view. Some of them still show wonderful flowers. Though I have listed the species on name, I hardly know the names of the various cultivars. They have multiplied themselves over the years by seeding, of which some are beautiful too.

Omdat we inmiddels een maand verder zijn, hier weer een foto van het vernieuwde stukje tuin, er is heel eenvoudig gras ingezaaid.  Links zie je nog net het formaat van de grote Camellia. 

Because it is the end of the month, here a picture of my renewed piece of garden, I have sown grass last week, very simple.  On first photo on the left you can see the size of the old Camellia. 

Deze zachtroze Camellia is ongeveer 1 meter hoog en bloeit ondanks het verpoten prima door, eerlijk gezegd heeft deze het nog nooit zo goed gedaan als dit jaar.

The pale pink Camellia is about 1 metre high and is blooming fine despite transplanting, honestly speaking this one was never as good as this year, amazing. 

De witte Camellia bloeit in een ander gedeelte van de tuin, het paadje tussen de buxussen wordt hier wel erg nauw.

The white Camellia is blooming in another part of the garden, as you see the path between the two boxwood pyramids becomes too narrow. 

In dit deel van de tuin bloeien naast de Helleborussen nu de allerliefste kleine blauwe Scillaatjes, de zachtblauwe Puschkinia's, Primula's en heel binnenkort de Frittilaria's.

Besides the Hellebores, in this part of the garden at this moment the cutest blue little Scillas are flowering, also pale blue Puschkinias, yellow Primulas and Frittilarias are coming soon.

Het is nu ook Forsythia tijd en van de bloesem van de wilde kers word ik ook heel blij.

It's also Forsythia time and the blossom of the wild cherry makes me happy too.

Weten mijn lezers nog dat ik in de herfst alle rozen uit het middenstuk verpoot heb, en dat mijn aller lekkerst geurende roos Mad. Isaac Pereire, van 25 jaar oud, helemaal kort gesnoeid was? Men dacht zelfs toen ze de foto's zagen, dat het nooit meer goed zou komen met deze roos.
Madame Isaac Pereire is ontwaakt uit haar winterslaap en zo te zien volkomen genezen van het gesol met haar.  Ik ben zo blij dat ze weer overal gaat uitlopen.

Readers do you still remember that I transplanted all my old roses from the part of the garden, now sown with grass, and that my most fragrant rose Mad. Isaac Pereire of 25 years old, was totally cut down? There were readers who even thought this was the end of the rose.
Madame Isaac Pereire awakened from hibernation and apparently completely healed from messing around with her. I was so excited to see first shoots.

Magnolia 'Black Tulip' komt bijna tot bloei, dit zijn de eerste bloemen die zich voorzichtig gaan ontvouwen.  Deze staat er nu voor het derde jaar en ik vind het nog steeds een prima aanwinst voor de tuin.  Het is de derde Magnolia in de tuin.

Magnolia 'Black Tulip'  is almost blooming, these are the first flowers which are unfolding cautiously.  We have this shrub for three years now, I think it is a great asset to the garden.
It is the third Magnolia in the garden.

Als je goed kijkt, zie je de knopjes van Rosa banksia 'Lutea' al zitten. Deze rozen hebben geluk dat we twee zachte winters achter de rug hebben, ze is niet zo winterhard.
Ze staat aan de buitenkant van het hek en lekker luw.  Tegen het hek staan over een lengte van ongeveer 50 meter allemaal klimrozen die ik afgelopen weken gesnoeid heb met onderbrekingen.   Rozen snoeien waar ik een trap bij nodig heb, houd ik altijd voor het laatst.

If you have a good look, you see the little buds of Rosa banksia 'Lutea'.  Fortunately this rose has two soft winters behind, she is not very hardy.  Against the fence outside the garden it is sheltered nicely with a background of ivy.  Over a length of about 50 metres are all climbing roses along the fence which I have been pruning last week.  Pruning roses where I need a ladder, I always keep for the last.

Het waait nog steeds stevig en vanmiddag heb ik in de kas de volgende éénjarigen voorgezaaid:
Zinnia elegans 'Envy' (groen en geel...), Cleome hassleriana 'Mauve Queen' (paarse kattensnor) , Antirrhinum majus maximum 'Mixture' (hoge leeuwenbek), Matthiola incana 'Mammouth Excelsior Mixed'(lange zomerviolier), Nicotiana Perfume Deep Purple, Coleus Wizard Mix, Cobaea Alba (klokwinde). Verder de lathyrussen verspeend.
Vraag me af of en waar ik het allemaal kwijt kan in mijn tuin........

Een volgende keer komen de Narcissen en blauwe druifjes aan bod, er bloeien er al aardig wat maar als het goed is komen er nog veel meer.

Oh nee, het wordt bar en boos buiten, het regent pijpenstelen gevolgd door hagelstenen!

It's still blowing strong, so this afternoon been busy in the greenhouse sowing annuals:
Green Zinnia 'Envy', Cleome 'Mauve Queen', Antirrhinum majus maxium (tall snap dragons), Matthiola incana 'Mammouth Excelsior' (scented stocks), Nicotiana Perfume Deep Purple, Coleus Wizard Mix, Cobae Alba.  Furthermore, pricking out the sweet peas.
I wonder if and where I can put this all in my garden....

A next time I shall show you the daffodils and grape hyacinths in the garden, they are already starting but many more of them will follow.

VALENTIJN Ja of Nee - VALENTINE Yes or No.

Volgens Wikipedia is Valentijnsdag een dag waarop geliefden elkaar extra aandacht geven met cadeautjes, bloemen of kaarten.
Het wordt gevierd op 14 februari. In het jaar 496 riep Paus Gelasius I 14 februari uit tot de dag van de Heilige Valentijn.
In de Verenigde Staten is men, uit commercieel oogpunt, begonnen met het verleggen van de nadruk van anonieme liefde naar liefde.  In Belgie en Nederland rukt het commerciële succes ook op.
Ik zal niet ingaan op de historische achtergrond, slechts mijn opinie geven.

Hoewel ik goed begrijp dat ondernemers gretig gebruik maken van de Valentijn hype omdat zij tenslotte hun brood moeten verdienen, vind ik het jammer dat hierdoor de echte Valentijns romantiek verdwenen is, wat is nu spannender dan een kaart ontvangen van een anonieme geliefde? Bovendien is het niet zo, dat we onze geliefden het hele jaar moeten liefhebben en af en toe moeten verrassen om sleur te voorkomen?  Ik dacht van wel.
Toch trokken de zoetgevooisde romantische blogs van over de hele wereld mij over de streep. Ik beperk me echter tot het huiselijke en stuur geen kaartjes of cadeautjes naar familie of vrienden, ze zouden raar opkijken.  Het hoeft ook geen geld te kosten.  Ik keek naar buiten en zag mijn rode Camelia in bloei staan, ja, hij is nóg vroeger dan vorig jaar. Eigenlijk vind ik het helemaal niet mooi, die grote rode bloemen in de tuin in februari maar hij staat er nu eenmaal.   Ik plukte een flink aantal bloemen en legde er een hart van op de oude verweerde tafel.
Mijn man kwam thuis, gaf me een kus en glimlachte, hij is gewend aan kleine attenties.

According to Wikipedia Valentine's Day is a day lovers give each other attention with presents, flowers or postcards.
In 496 Paus Gelasius I proclaimed February 14th as the day of Saint Valentine, from that time February 14th is celebrated.
From a commercial point of view, in the United States they started to shift the emphasis from anonymous love to just love. And nowadays the commercial success is advancing in Belgium and The Netherlands too. 
I will not dwell on the historical background, just give my opinion.

While I understand that business owners are eager to use the Valentine hype, afterall they should earn their living, but I regret that the true Valentine romance has gone, what is more exciting than receiving a postcard from an anonymous lover? Moreover, is it not, that we should love our loved ones all year? I thought so. Nevertheless the sweet-voiced romantic blogs from around the world pulled me over the line. However, I will limit myself to my husband and not sending cards or presents to family and friends, they would think it odd. It also does not need to cost money. I looked outside and saw my red Camellia blooming, yes even earlier than last year.  I actually think it's not nice at all these big bright red flowers in the garden in February, but the red Camellia is there.  I picked a few flowers and put them on my old weathered table, of course in heart shape.
My husband came home, gave me a kiss and smiled, he is used to little attentions.

Er zijn veel legenden over Valentijn, maar het Valentijnsfeest van de romantische liefde, zoals dat tegenwoordig gevierd wordt, dankt zijn ontstaan aan Geoffrey Chaucer die in zijn gedicht 'Parliament of Fowls'  (1380-1382) deze versregels schreef:

There are many legends about Valentine, but the Valentine party of the romantic love, as celebrated nowadays, owes its existence to Geoffrey Chaucer who wrote the following verselines in his poem 'Parliament of Fowls' (1380-1382):

(For this was on St. Valentine's day

When every bird cometh there to choose his mate)

Is not that wonderful!

Ik maakte daarna ook nog een Schwarzwalder Kirsch taart, zonder de kirsch want F. lust geen alcohol, maar des te meer van de chocola.  Ik gebruikte voor de vulling kersen uit een pot en maakte hiervan ook nog een hart op de taart, helaas liep het sap wat uit.  Help, nu is het een bloedend hart, dat was niet de bedoeling.  De Camelia bloemen drijven nu op een schaal, zo gaan ze langer mee.

Afterwards I made a Black Forest cake, without cherry brandy because F. does not like alcohol, but the more of the chocolate.  For the filling I used cherries from a jar and also made a heart of them on the cake, unfortunately the juice ran out.  Help, now it is a bleeding heart, that was not the intention.
The Camellia flowers are now floating on a dish, so they last longer.

CAMELLIA'S IN DE TUIN - CAMELLIAS IN OUR GARDEN.

Linnaeus noemde de Camellia, waarvan een veertigtal soorten bekend zijn, naar de bioloog George Joseph Kamel, een jezuïet die vaak naar het Verre Oosten is gereisd met de schepen van de Oostindische Compagnie.  In 1792 werd de Camellia vanuit Japan, Korea of China naar Europa gebracht. 

The Camellia, of which a forty species are known, is named by Linnaeus to the biologist George Joseph Kamel, a Jesuit who traveled often to the Far East with ships of the East India Company.
In 1792 the Camellia was brought from Japan, Korea or China to Europe.

Deze prachtige lichtroze bloeiende Camellia kocht ik in 1993 na een tuinclub uitstapje, zonder naam bij een kwekerij in Boskoop. De plant groeit zeer langzaam en heeft elk jaar wel te lijden van de kou.  Dit keer doet ze het geweldig goed na de zachte winter.

This beautiful pale pink flowering Camellia I bought unnamed at a Camellia nursery at Boskoop in 1993 on a garden club trip. The shrub is growing very slowy and every year suffering of cold again. After an extremely mild winter, she is doing great this time.

In Zuid-Engeland en in Frankrijk ten zuiden van Parijs, groeien Camellia's gemakkelijk buiten. Er zijn meer dan duizend benaamde cultivars en er komen er elk jaar meer bij, soms is het verschil van de bloemen minimaal. Een groot gedeelte hiervan kunnen in Nederland niet in de tuin worden gekweekt, er zijn er echter ook die een temperatuur van - 10 gr. C. zonder schade kunnen doorstaan. Bij strenge vorst is het raadzaam ze af te dekken met kunstof-folie. Verder is het nodig ze op beschaduwde plaatsen te planten, in elk geval beschermd tegen de winterse ochtendzon. Zware temperatuurverschillen kunnen ze namelijk niet hebben. 's Nachts vorst van - 8 degr. en om 11 uur 's morgens ontdooien tot +3 degr. is een te grote overgang. Plant daarom niet op het oosten en zuiden en bescherm haar tegen ijzige oostenwinden.

De Camellia verlangt een vochthoudende, zure grond.

In the south of England and in France south of Paris, Camellias grow easily outside.  There are more than thousand named cultivars and this number is increasing every year, sometimes they hardly show differences. The major part cannot be grown in our Dutch gardens, however, there are Camellias which can stand temperatures of minus 10 degrees C. without damage.  By heavy frost it is advisable to cover the shrub with plastic foil.  Furthermore, they need a shady spot, anyway protected against the wintry morning sun.  They don't like serious temperature differences. The change of temperature at night of minus 8 degr. to plus 3 degr. in the morning is too much. So don't plant Camellias on the east and south and protect her against freezing east winds. 

The Camellia requires a moist acidic soil.
  

Deze rode grootbloemige half dubbele Camellia kocht ik als stekje van 15 cm. bij een andere Boskoopse kwekerij in 1996 en heeft inmiddels een hoogte van meer dan 2 meter.

This large-flowered half double Camellia I bought as a cutting of 15 cm. at another Boskoop nursery in 1996 and in the meantime has reached a height of more than 2 meters.

Camellia Jury's Yellow staat sinds 2000 in onze tuin en begint ook al een flinke heester te worden. Ze heeft prachtige zachtgele bloemen die helaas te snel bruin worden.  Hoe mooi de bloemen ook even zijn mogen, ik zou haar nooit meer opnieuw aanplanten.

Camellia Jury's Yellow is since 2000 in our garden and forms a nice growing shrub. The beautiful pale yellow flowers unfortunately turn brown far to quickly. How beautiful the flowers may be, I should never plant this once again. 

Dit is onze oudste en tevens grootste Camellia.  We kregen haar van onze vrienden toen we hier in 1989 kwamen wonen. Ook deze Camellia zit vol knoppen maar de bloei begint iets later.

This is our oldest and also biggest Camellia. We got the shrub as a present from our friends in 1989 when we moved to this place.  This Camellia is full of buds too but blooms slightly later.

Op mijn oude keukentafel in de kas heb ik een "drijvertje" van Camellia's gemaakt en ik durfde zo maar een tak te snijden van de grote rode Camellia om in mijn oma's oude emaille waterkan te zetten.

On my old kitchen table in the greenhouse I made a "float"of Camellias and I dared to cut a branch of the big red Camellia to put in my grandmother's old enamel waterjug.

Wat zal ik er nog meer over zeggen, Camellia's zijn wanneer de omstandigheden van klimaat en bodemgesteldheid het toelaten, een mooie toevoeging in de tuin. Voordeel is dat ze mooi glanzend wintergroen blad hebben, nadeel is dat ze voor de kleine tuin na verloop van tijd toch te groot worden.

What can I say more, Camellias are a nice addition to your garden when climatic and soil conditions permit. The advantage is, they are wintergreen with pretty shiny green leaves. The disadvantage is, for the small garden they grow too tall after some time.
