DC CHARITY EVENT: 25 GIRLS, 25 DAYS - @MICHINTRAINING

What does it take to make a leader?
That's the question we asked when we started MiT. How do we take smart, ambitious, enthusiastic and promising girls from urban high schools and help mold them into the leaders of tomorrow? What's missing in their formal education and training today that will help them storm the world? We searched and queried and did our market research and came up with a list of skills that girls in high schools, especially urban high schools, just are not learning. And then we designed the answer:
Michelle in Training
For the next 25 days we are asking 500 people to give $25 each to help us turn girls into leaders. We’ll be sending emails, tweets, and Facebook messages answering your questions about what, when, where, why and how MiT will work. We’ll be asking you to share our story with your friends, family, networks, co-workers, church folk and frenemies. We are asking you, for 25 days, to join us in helping take girls with promise, intelligence, dreams, and hope to the next level so that they can do anything. So that they can change the world. And while they’re at it, they can prove to the world that every little black girl, wherever she’s born, whatever her history, can work hard, play smart, learn the ropes, and become every bit a First Lady. Our Patron Saint is not an exception. She is the example.
It takes a village to raise a child and it takes an international network to turn 25 girls in to leaders. Visit StartSomeGood to donate your $25 to the cause, check out our video on Michelle in Training, like us on Facebook, repin us on Pinterest and shout it from the rooftops (or on Twitter, use the hashtag #25days25girls).
Michelle in Training is coming. Are you with us?

On a chilly February evening, the Westin Arlington Hotel was all abuzz as the Pakistani community came out in droves to support Fashion for Pakistan. This fashion benefit, hosted by Nauman and Sofia HD, combined beautiful gowns with conscientious giving. Monies raised from the event went to support the relief efforts for the victims of the floods in Pakistan.
Designer Nomi Ansari presented his runway show. The runway was filled with glitz and glam as these traditional Pakistani outfits, known as Shalwar (the bottom) Kameez (the top) [thanks to Alisha Hyatt for schooling me], took center stage. These drop dead gorgeous outfits are usually worn to formal events and weddings. The magnificence of the fabrics and the colors, along with the incredible embellishments made this a night to remember.
There was also a silent auction as well as several vendors who definitely had the bling on display. There was also presentations during the night to call attention to the plight of the flood victims, as well as a brief presentation by the GWFCC on their mission.
The most amazing part of it all is that the production of fab fashion show and related events was executed to perfection by Chauncea Carothers and her talented classmates from the Fashion School at Marymount University. Remember Chauncea's name. You will be hearing her name again and again.

There is truly hope for Haiti.
I attended a special reception at Macy's to support the artisans of Haiti whose collections are being sold at select Macy's stores throughout the United States. With the help of BRANDAID/HAITI and Fairwinds Trading, artisans and craftsmen around the world can earn a proper living through their sale of their wares. Fairwinds Trading previously worked with Macy's to sell a collections from Rwanda. So the organization didn't bat an eye to help those who lost their workspaces in the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
It was such a spirited event. There were many, many Haitian-Americans in attendance. You could feel the pride and spirit of Haiti reverberating throughout the room. I was extremely happy to learn that there was a group, the Haitian Roundtable, or HRT. The Haitian Roundtable is an organization comprised of civic minded Haitian Americans. Founding members are leaders and experts in a variety of sectors—banking, finance, government, investments, law, media, not-for-profit, politics and technology who are committed to civic engagement as well as philanthropic endeavors benefiting the island of Haiti, Haitian organizations and causes.
Peace quilter Sister Angela Belizaire spoke passionately about the devastating effect of the earthquake on her quality of life and her work. But it did not seem to have broken her spirit. I was inspired by her words. To top off the evening, the reigning queen of Haitian Song, Emeline Michel, filled Macy's with the song that makes your spirit dance and feel something. Haiti-Americans in attendance began dancing joyously. I know it brought them back to Haiti - the Haiti of their youth.
As I walked around to view what was available for sale, I couldn't decide on what I wanted. By the time that I did, someone else snapped it up. You move, you lose. But everything happens for a reason because I bought the most amazing owl figure. It sits on my nightstand. I wake up to it every morning and it is the last thing that I see at night. It reminds me to keep it moving and to stay true to myself. I guess you can say that it was a spiritual event for me too. Head down to Macy's downtown and see what's left because items were flying off the shelves. Through your purchases, artisans are able to feed their families, cloth and educate their children and walk with dignity where opportunities are rare.
Here are some images from the event. Enjoy.
