UPDATED: Jonny Quest - The Real Adventures

Now updated with a copy of the cover for issue #4

I own issues 1 & 2

I've updated this post on new information - all updates in fuchsia - last updated 19th October 2021.

I've looked before at comics from Titan Comics (here) and I wanted to look at another title I know very little about, published by Titan Magazines. Jonny Quest - The Real Adventures ran in 1996/7. Six issues were definitely released, and up to nine were advertised.

The title reprinted strip material previously published by Dark Horse Comics as The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, based on the animated updated version of the 1960s original show. That series ran for twelve issues and three specials, but Titan’s title did not run the course due to disappointing sales, the TV series not proving a success in the UK.

Titan's issues were not, as noted on the Jonny Quest Fandom Wiki here, a direct re-release of the Dark Horse versions, and they released the stories in different order. For instance, the Dark Horse issues #1-4 included the story "Net of Chaos" in four chapters, while the Titan  Magazines issues 3 and 6 (and presumably issues 4 and 5) include chapters of this story. The story "Hell on Earth: The Movie" was in Dark Horse issue #7, but Titan issue 3 includes this story instead.

One of the feature writers was "Paul Travers", a pseudonym for editor John Freeman.

The Dark Horse comic strip editor throughout was Phil Amara.

So, without further ado, here's my covers gallery. As ever, there are a few gaps, so if you can help out do let me know.

I've now looked at the British Library catalogue for this comic and it has it lasting only six issues. I'll therefore discount the existence of issues 7-9 (despite issue 9 being solicited in issue #82 (June 1997) of Comics International).

UPDATED: Fun and Games comic

This is not to be confused with Tesco fun 'n games (which I looked at here and here) but instead is a comic I know very little about. The comic is described thus by Comics International...New two-in-one comic: Fun reprints Fleetway's Frankiestein, Sweeny Toddler etc. Games is a 24 page cover-mounted supplement, 99p

This is the only image I can find of it online.

Cover art clearly by Tom Paterson. It's published by Nexus Media.

The first mention of Fun and Games in Comics International #79 (March 1997) where issues 3&4 are highlighted. The last mention in Comics International #93 - where issues 29 & 30 are highlighted. There may have been further issues but Comics International never mentions Fun and Games again.

Update
I've now acquired some more images...
Issue 1 with free gift
You can just about see (on the bottom left hand side) the wrap-around (cover-mounted) 'games' section. So, even if 'games' gets detached from the comic you'd still have the 'fun' section left looking like a regular comic.

Ah, here's a Claws reprint...

...and more Tom Paterson art on the back page.
The bottom half of Tom Paterson's art is obscured by the cover-mounted, wraparound 'games' section.

Lew Stringer has look at Fun and games on his blog here

UPDATE:
I've now found a cover for issue #4 (June 1997). Another cover by Tom Paterson.

contents include...Frankie Stein, art by Terry Bave, 'Strong Stuff' strip, 'Handy Andy' strip, 'Memory Banks' strip, 'X-ray specs' strip, 'Sammy shrink' strip, 'Lazy Bones' strip, 'Cry baby' strip, 'Creepy Comix' strip and 'The Invisible family' by Tom Paterson (this looks like a new strip whereas the rest are reprints).

UPDATED: Street Sharks comics (1997)

My ongoing quest to document all '90s comics finally reaches Street Sharks - there was a Street Sharks comic published in the US by Archie Comics. This does not look like a reprint of that. Looks like originated British material in amongst plenty of non-comics content.

It lasted at least 9 issues - and I now have covers for these 9 issues - the question now is did it make it to (or beyond) issue 10?

Update for this post - cover for issue 2 identified (thanks to fragileart on the Street Sharks reddit)

I own issues 1 and 9

Street Sharks, issue #2, £1.25

UPDATED: Gargoyles - Titan Magazines (1996 - 1997)

I've looked before at comics from Titan Comics (here) and I wanted to look at another title I know very little about.

Gargoyles was actually published under the Titan Magazines imprint, from 1996 to 1997, running for at least seven issues, reprinting material first published by Marvel Comics, whose series based on the Disney animation ran for 11 issues from December 1994 to October 1995.

The Titan covers utilised promotional art supplied by the licensor. It would appear only seven issues were published, although an eighth was trailed; and solicitations were made for further issues.
Here's my covers gallery. As ever, there are a few gaps, so if you can help out do let me know.

I own issues 1 & 2

Gargoyles Issue 1 - Titan Magazines, November 1996

Gargoyles No. 1 came With Free Gift of cardboard cutout Collector Figures and reprinted "Rude Awakening" by Martin Pasko, with art by Amanda Conner (breakdowns) and Alberto Saichann (Finishes), Greg Wright (Colour), John Costanza (Letters). Edited by Hildy Mesnik

In addition to the strip, this issue included a centrespread "Meet the Gargoyles" feature and a puzzle page.

Gargoyles Issue 2 - Titan Magazines, December 1996

Gargoyles No. 2 came With Free Gift of cardboard cutout Collector Figures and reprinted "Always Darkest Before the Dawn" by Martin Pasko, pencilled by Amanda Conner, inked by Alberto Saichann (Pages 1 - 11) and the Palmiotti Bros (Pages 12 - 22); coloured by Greg Wright, lettered by John Costanza. Edited by Hildy Mesnik

The centre spread features "Lexinton's Little Theatre" to use as a backdrop for your Gargoyles figures, and readers were challenged to send in their Diorama photos. The issue also included a puzzle page and letters column.

Here's an advert for issue #2, from the pages of Jonny Quest - The Real Adventures- issue 2)...

Gargoyles Issue 3 - Titan Magazines, January 1997

Gargoyles No. 3 reprinted "Rude Awakening" by Martin Pasko, pencilled by Amanda Conner, inked by Alberto Saichann; coloured by Greg Wright, lettered by John Costanza. Edited by Hildy Mesnik.

It also featured a centrespread of Demona, a puzzle page and letters column

Gargoyles Issue 4 - Titan Magazines, February 1997

Reprint details not known

Gargoyles Issue 5 - Titan Magazines, March 1997

Reprint details not known

This issue featured a puzzle page, "The Gargoyles Saga" feature by Andy Mangels (Part One) and letters column

Gargoyles Issue 6 - Titan Magazines, April 1997

Reprint details not known

This issue featured a puzzle page, "The Gargoyles Saga" feature by Andy Mangels (Part Two) and letters column

Gargoyles Issue 7 - Titan Magazines, May 1997

Gargoyles No. 7 reprinted "The Pack Attacks" by Mort Todd, pencilled by Grant Miehm (Guest Penciller), inked by Alberto Saichann; coloured by Anthony Tollin, lettered by John Costanza. Edited by Hildy Mesnik.

It also featured a puzzle page, "The Gargoyles Saga" feature by Andy Mangels (Part Three) and letters column

Gargoyles Issue 8 - Titan Magazines, June 1997

Image not to hand - can you help?

This issue was trailed in Issue 7, advertised as being on sale from 20th May 1997, with readers asked "Is it Live or is it VR-X?"

Gargoyles Issue 9 - Titan Magazines, July 1997

Image not to hand - can you help?

Gargoyles Issue 10, Titan Magazines, August 1997

Image not to hand - can you help?

We note that issue #82 (June 1997) of Comics International lists issue #10 in the 'Advance listings' section but in issue #83 (July 1997) Gargoyles is listed as cancelled. We're therefore assuming it could run until issue 10 but, of course, just because a title has been solicited doesn't mean it's been printed.

A trade paperback reprinting issue 1 - 4 of the Marvel US series was also published by Titan.
