Merrick: The sensational elephantman 7+8

Currently tearing it up on Kickstarter and well on its way to smashing its £5,000 target are the next 2 issues of Tom Ward and Luke Parker's fantastic (in every sense of the word) serial 'Merrick: the sensational elephantman'

The funding for these 2 issues will see a 2 issue story arc 'Monsters' published - Will Merrick survive his battle against the ancient Lovecraftian maggot deity Phu-ggogot? What revelations will be unearthed about his own past? "Monsters" is a Victorian pulp adventure joyride, and a great jumping on point for new readers.

Full details can be found here - I've backed it and hope you will too

If you've not read these great comics before then here's an introduction to the world...

Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman is a Victorian gaslamp pulp adventure comic set in 1880s' London. Based on a fictional version of the life of Joseph Merrick, it steps between historical facts and turn of the century folklore juxtaposed with the American superhero comic conventions of super powers, masks, secret identities and fantastic adventures.

When Joseph Merrick’s pregnant mother was knocked down by an escaped elephant, the phenomenon of maternal impression caused her child to develop the toughness and strength of an elephant.
Spurned by genteel society because of his thick grey skin and mis-shapen body he acquired the stage name of Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman and travelled Europe as part of a sideshow, until his manager betrayed him and left him for dead.
After dragging himself back to London on a quest for revenge, Merrick now finds himself embroiled with Dr Frederick Treves, one of the country’s greatest surgeons.

Merrick: the sensational Elephantman & Dr Crowe - crossover

Just a shout-out this morning for a new Kickstarter that I've backed, it 's a cross-over comic with Merrick: the sensational Elephant man and Doctor Crowe.

It's co-written by Tom Ward and Doctor Crowe creator Corey Fryia and features art from Merrick regular Luke Parker.

As they say here...
When Dr Crowe arrives in London to solve the murder of a police constable, he crosses paths with The Elephantman, who is on a mission of his own to find the missing children of Whitechapel. Together they will fight for their lives to survive the night. This new one-shot cross-over is a rip-roaring 1880's pulp adventure, bringing together two iconic indie comic characters: Dr Crowe and Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman.
Here are 5 teaser pages to get you in the mood for this great sounding story...with it's usual fantastic Luke Parker art.

Joseph Merrick #6 - coming soon

It seems only the other day that Tom Ward & Luke Parker were sending out copies of 'Merrick the sensational elephantman #5', in fact it was only in May. But my copy is still sat in its wrapper as I've yet to read it, the shame, the shame!

Anyway, they haven't been hanging around as Tom has just announced that the next issue (#6) has been completed and the printed copies should all be out by the end of July. Great news for all those who backed this great Kickstarter campaign.

Here's the cover to issue 6...

There are things to buy here - and you can even pre-order issue 6 - but be warned there is a limited print run of only 500 copies - and you can only order 2 issues, so don't delay.

new comics (4) - Merrick: the gambler's cards

Having seen Lady Flintlock reach all its stretch targets on Kickstarter yesterday I thought I'd flag up another great Kickstarter campaign that I've backed...

Merrick - the gambler's cards continues the story begun in Merrick the sensational Elephantman by Tom Ward (story) and Luke Ward (art). The gambler's cards actually represents issues 5+6 of the ongoing story of Joseph Merrick. Yes, that Joseph Merrick.

I've recently picked up both Merrick the sensational Elephantman and Treves a restless night and I have to say they are great. The production values are really high, the story intriguing and richly layered plus the art is great (Luke Ward brings a fantastic Mike Mignola vibe to proceedings). Why this hasn't been picked up by a mainstream publisher is beyond me. So, if you have a thing for stories set in the pea-souper soaked atmosphere of old London town then why not give this a try?

You can back this from as little as £2 (or from £9 if you want to own a physical copy of the comics)

Tom Ward's a member of the facebook group so he might be able to give you more details of Merrick and of the kickstarter campaign in general.
