UPDATED: Nostalgia & Comics

My post the other day about the adverts for Dark they were and golden eyed (here) made me think about comics advertising for other shops...and then boom! this pops up on eBay.

It's for sale here and is Trevor Goring's original artwork for  Birmingham's Nostalgia & Comics shop. I'd love to see other adverts for the shop.

Update (Mar 2026) I recently came across this advert in Escape #15 (May 1989). I'm assuming the signature 'Ormston' is that of comics artist Dean Ormston.

Update: the last post produced further examples of adverts so I'm just adding them to the post...

Lew Stringer sent me this

this was also c/o Lew

as was this - the first mention of the shop (in Comic Media News)

this was from Mark Warby

Update: friend of the blog Sam Farnworth has provided this image by artist Simon Parkes. Thanks! Plus I've found a Hunt Emerson advert.

this advert is taken from Alter Image #4 (November 1987)

MACH1 art from prog 3 up for sale - ends today!

Having reported here on some very early MACH1 pages (from prog 4)  sell for £1,287 recently I see that the same seller has 2 more pages of original art up for sale...

I've only just spotted some very early MACH1 art from 2000AD that's up for sale. Both these pages end in the early evening tonight (Sunday 24th October).

First up is this page by Massimo Belardinelli from prog 3 (12th March 1977) - a very dynamic image of John Probe diving into the water.
At the time of typing bids are at £410 - I reckon this will go for a lot more.

Boom! sells for £1,200

The 2nd piece can be found here and is taken from the 1978 2000AD sci-fi special - art is by Trevor Goring. At the time of typing the price has been up to £82
Boom! sells for £208.83

Death race 2020

Reading a 1990s comic fanzine the other day I saw a series mentioned that I hadn't come across before - it's "Death Race 2020" and was published by (film director) Roger Corman's Cosmic comic imprint.

The reason the series caught my eye was the names of the creators involved - Pat Mills, Kev O'Neill, Tony Skinner (plus Trevor Goring & Shane Oakley).

So, to start the day, let's have a comics adaptation of a Roger Corman movie with (quite) a few covers by the inimitable Kevin O'Neill...

Death Race 2020 #1 (published by Cosmic comics, April 1995), cover by Kevin O'Neill

Death Race 2020 #2 (published by Cosmic comics, May 1995), cover by Kevin O'Neill

Death Race 2020 #3 (published by Cosmic comics, June 1995), cover by Kevin O'Neill

Death Race 2020 #4 (published by Cosmic comics, July 1995), cover by Trevor Goring

Death Race 2020 #5 (published by Cosmic comics, August 1995), cover by Stanislas Manoukian & Vincent Roucher

Death Race 2020 #6 (published by Cosmic comics, September 1995), cover by Trevor Goring & Ashley Underwood

Death Race 2020 #7 (published by Cosmic comics, October 1995), cover by Gene Fama

Death Race 2020 #8 (published by Cosmic comics, November 1996), cover by Kevin O'Neill
