Heritage auctions - London, part 1

Here's a few images from the recent event (11th Feb 2026) at the Heritage Auctions gallery in central London. Event seemed to go well - they've promised to organise more!

UPDATED: Aaargh!!! at the ICA

I'm aware of the 1970/1 comics exhibition at the ICA entitled "Aaargh!!! A celebration of comics" - although I've not covered it on the blog to date - but this image was new to me so I thought it could act as a prompt for me to gather together all sorts of other bits n' bobs about the exhibition.

Happy Superman day

To celebrate Superman day let's have a look at this recent Superman painting by ace artist Chris Weston that was up for sale on his ebay store (here) very recently. Great art as always from Chris.

I've previously looked at the great spin-off 'decks of cards' that Kev Sutherland put together for the comics festivals he ran in the early '00s. So far I've looked at...

Superman in Triumph (1939)

Two interesting early Superman appearances caught my eye on eBay over the weekend....

First up is this advert from the back page of Triumph #771 dated July 29th 1939 and is a 'teaser' image of the cover for the next issue. That issue (#772) saw the start of a 21 issue run of Superman reprints - only a year after his debut, this was the first time Superman had been reprinted. This then can be considered the first appearance on Superman in the UK.

The same seller also has here a lot featuring Triumph issue 773 - this is the 2nd issue to feature the Superman strip 

The header image of Superman racing a train (below) is new for Triumph and is not a reprint.

Superman in The Triumph and the Gem, 1940

Here's a quick look at the first issue of the second run of Superman in the April 6th 1940 issue (#807) of The Triumph and Gem. 

(If we leave aside the advert in issue 771 for the strip starting in issue 772 then) Superman first appeared in issue 772, week ending August 5th 1939, of The Triumph - his strip there (his first appearance outside the USA & just a year after his debut) would run for 21 issues (so to issue 792).

This 2nd run would last from issue 807-814 - there wouldn't be any cover appearances for Superman - unlike his first run in The Triumph where he graced the cover 4 times.
