UPDATED: Eagle club notebook - happy birthday Eagle

In honour of it being the 74th birthday of Eagle today I thought I'd share these images of an Eagle club notebook that was up for sale on ebay recently.

I like these images, not just for the notebook (which I'd never seen before) but because the original owner has filled the notebook with transfers.I think the transfers were produced by Tuck's and I'm not sure I've seen an unused set of them.

Anyway, this notebook gives you a good idea of what the transfers were like. You can see Dan Dare characters, Riders of the Range characters, PC49 (possibly for copyright infringement reasons just referred to as 'the man in blue'), Harris Tweed & Chicko. I don't think I've ever seen any Chicko (who was crated by Norman Thelwell) merchandise before.

UPDATE: the letter below (swiped from ebay) now confirms that the notebook was a free gift for early joiners of the Eagle club (in 1950)

Comic art for sale - Dominic Winter auction ,15 Dec

Just a reminder that these lots go under the hammer today - good luck if you're bidding!

The next Dominic Winter auction has a few interesting comic lots included in it, I've picked my highlights from the illustration lots (lots 729-816). These are in my order of preference, not the order in which they'll be sold!

First up is lot 809 here with these two (non-consecutive) pages of Keith Watson Dan Dare art from Eagle - bids open at £150

Lot 796 (here) is a lot with John Ryan original artwork - Captain Pugwsh and Harris Tweed are featured

Lot 813 (here) intrigues with the lot described thus...
White (Hugh Stanley, 1904-1988). A collection of prints and drawings, 58 pencil and pen & ink drawings on paper or card, including cartoon strips for comics, portrait and figure studies, architectural studies, etc., and 90 prints, mostly etchings (many artist's proofs), various condition, largest 72 x 50 cm,

Artist Stanley White is best-known for his science-fiction picture strips which were published in newspapers and children's comics such as Mickey Mouse Weekly, Bo-Peep, and the Boys' and Girls' Daily Mail. White's work appeared in the debut issue of Mickey Mouse Weekly published in 1936, and his much-acclaimed 'Ian on Mu' was Britain's first science-fiction picture strip serial.

Eagle adverts - part 3

Friend of the blog Norman Boyd has kindly supplied me with some adverts from the original Eagle - I'll present a selection over the coming days, here's a few to get you going...all are from 1961. I was particularly interested to see the advert for 1962 diaries as I've got quite a good selection of Eagle diaries but I've never even heard of Girl or Swift diaries before.

Previous adverts can be found here and here

ABC film review - April 1952

The news that the last ever ABC cinema has closed...

...causes me to reach for the shelves and show you the scans of Eagle, Girl and Swift stories that appeared in the ABC film review in 1952+53. I've got copies of all the Eagle strips that were reprinted, but I'm not so sure about Girl and Swift, anyway we'll see how we get on
