The Birthstone for the month of July is the stunning Ruby!!
Along with the sapphire, emerald and diamond, the ruby is considered a precious stone. The ruby and its sister stone the Sapphire are a member of the corundum species...the word corundum means “very hard mineral used as an abrasive”.   You might be surprised to know the only difference between the ruby and the sapphire is the color.
Rubies are found in Afghanistan, Australia, Cambodia, India, Kenya, Pakistan (Kashmir), Russian, United States, (North Carolina), Greenland and Vietnam, with some of the most important finds in Myanmar (formerly Burma), Tanzania, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

Deep Red Natural Ruby Crystal and Natural Faceted Ruby Cut StoneA composite terminated crystal from Madagascar and a Burmese (Myanmar) Faceted Stone, both natural

The ruby ranges in color from pink to blood-red in color.  The most desirable red (Latin – ruber) being blood red with a touch of blue, which is called “pigeon’s blood”.  The presence of chromium provides the red and the presence of iron explains any brown tones.  The color of the ruby will vary within each deposit making it difficult to determine the location where found by looking at the gem. When you hear “Burma ruby” or Siam ruby” more often this is referring to the quality not the source location of the gem.

The color is often uneven with stripes and spots throughout the gem, all natural rubies have imperfections including impurities and inclusions such as the needle like rutile, known as “silk” which the Gemologist uses to determine the real ruby from the synthetic ruby.  Rubies with a 3 or 6-point star are cut into cabochons to show the star effect. The presence of chromium provides the red and the presence of iron explains any brown tones.

The ruby in its rough form is dull and greasy, as are most gems, but it is said once the gem is cut “the luster can approach that of the diamond “.  Since the 1960’s it has become common for the ruby to be treated with heat to improve the color, as a result the cost of a natural untreated Burmese ruby of 10ct would be on par with a natural diamond!    Having said that the ruby is one of the most expensive gems, with large ones worth more than diamonds, which is why they are often used for royalty/wealthy jewelry and insignia.

The ruby is hard with only the diamond harder, but it lacks cleavage*, as a result the ruby is brittle therefore, cutting and setting the stone must be done carefully.
Cleavage*: “Crystal can break along the lines of weakness related to the atomic structure (cleavage) in such a way that a flat surface which is called a cleavage plane is left. Where the break is not related to the fracture, the resulting surface will not be flat or smooth.  Fracture may be described as uneven, splintery.  Cleavage and fracture affect the strength of a gemstone as well as how easy it can be worked/cut/shaped”.

I admit I was surprised to find the natural, untreated ruby is such a valuable gem.

Some interesting information:
  • The ruby is used to celebrate the 15th and 40th wedding anniversary.
  • It is used in ancient times for bad health and to protect against misfortune.
  • Placed on building to ensure good fortune to the building.

A give away!

I've gotten behind in my posting but the good news is my last big show for the season is over so I will have time to work on updating my blog, Etsy store and my web site. I know, I know, you've heard it all before!!!!!

I have the best intentions...but...I seem to get side tracked along the way as there is so much to learn and do.

My 1st Anniversary for my Etsy store is November 19th and I'm having a give away, no purchase necessary, for a sterling silver stamped pendant, stamped with names, initials, a short saying, or hammered ... the winners preference. To enter leave a comment after this post or convo me at my Etsy store from November 16th to November 23 telling me what you would like stamped if you win the prize. Something similiar to the pendant below either on a black leather cord or a sterling silver chain again your choice ...the draw will take place on Monday, November 24th. (I managed to get my dates mixed up...it should be November 24th not the 23rd)

I'm also offering "free" shipping in my Etsy store from November 15th to November 30th for the Christmas rush...remember if you don't see what you are looking for convo me...I love custom orders!!!

I will finish the "Birthstone of the Month" series, October and November to be up soon... I've become interested in another aspect of stones... their healing properties, which I find absolutely fascinating. I will be incorporating this information into my blog soon!

I'll be posting again shortly... :0)

My "Arte y Pico" Award!!!!

I was given two amazing awards in less than a week...what can I say but I'm thrilled! As I was composing my recipient's list for the "Sweet Home" award, Heidi from Health Nut Wannabee Mom blog was composing her recipient's list for the Arte y Pico award and you guessed it...I chose Heidi as one of my recipient's and Heidi chose me as one of her recipient's! Such a wonderful coincidence!!!

I was given the Arte y Pico award on Sunday June 23rd, but I decided to wait a few days before I posted my list, the reason being is it is simply amazing to me two people would decide to pass both the "Sweet Home" award and the Arte y Pico award along to me and I wanted both awards to stand alone...each award to be front and center for a few days without competing.

Now to the business at hand......

"The Arte y Pico Award"

The "Arte y Pico" award was created and to be given to bloggers who inspire others with their creative energy and their talents, whether it be writing, artwork in all media's. When you receive this award it is considered a "special honor". Once you have received this ward, you are to pass it on to at least 5 others.

1) The winner of the award must choose 5 bloggers that they consider deserving of this award for the creativity, design, posts and contribution to the blogging community, no matter the language.

2) Each award given has to have the name of the author and a link to his or her blog to be visited by everyone.

3) Each award winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that has given her or him the award itself.

4) Award winner and the giver of this award must show the link of the "Arte y Pico" blog, so everyone will know the origin of this award.

5) Post these rules.

The following are the perfect artist to receive this award as they are artists "who inspire others with their creative energy and their talents".

Click around...these are amazing blogs by talented artists regardless of their medium...I'm sure you will enjoy reading these as much as I do...

DeWanda here I come!

I've found another venue to sell my jewels...DeWanda.com...it is based out of Europe, Germany to be exact... the products must be and I quote "unique, customizable and/or handmade, made or designed by you and are neither mass-produced nor imported"...sounds reasonable to me!

Presently there isn't a listing fee, but that is coming once they reach a specific size, with a certain number of buyers... they don't reveal what this fee is just yet...they do say that the listing fees won't happen before April 1st, 2008. For the time being sellers pay a 5% fee upon a sale and there isn't any listing time limit...but I have a feeling that may be coming as well!

There are French German and English listings...you may list in all three sections if you know the languages. The fees are in EUR and I've noticed that some people find that confusing...I used EX to help with the conversion. I've only listed two items so far...not sure how long I'll stay there or how many items I'll list...

Above is the first item I listed on DeWanda...my second try at the branch technique, copper wire with aqua blue freshwater pearls...my first attempt was a pair of earrings, I wanted to try something small to gain some experience with the technique. Next I'd like to try a sterling silver necklace...

Below is my second item I listed...a tiny pair of 9mm lampwork beads done in the jazzy tiger colors. These beads are wire wrapped in sterling silver, hanging from SS ear hooks, from which are haning hand forged sterling silver square wire rings...Funky and Fun wouldn't you say!!!DeWanda looks like an interesting place, with its forums and blogs, they have Pinboards where you keep your favorites, you can "pin" an item as well as heart it...much the same as Etsy. Of course I haven't taken the time to go over the site well but I will in the next little while. The day I signed up I saw three Etsians with shops at DaWanda...small world!!!

~My Plans For This Site~

~Would you like to be featured on this blog?~

When I started this blog site I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to do with it...I knew it wasn't going to be a personal blog... I wanted it to be concerning/relevant to my jewelry design company. After taking sometime to think things over I've decided what I will do with this blog.

My plan is to use this spot to promote "Azure Islands Designs, other Etys artists, as well as any artist that happens to find this blog and from time to time offer "How To" segments...featuring issues that I want to learn as well as segments featuring all kinds of "guest" artists that are willing to promote their own craft...what ever that may be!

In the next few weeks I will be gathering artists and their information/photos to feature here, along with "How To" informational ideas from artists who would like to pass along their ideas and thoughts. I hope to make this an interesting, exciting, enjoyable place where artists of all mediums will frequent often!

My request to you....

*Anyone interested in being featured in this blog, as an artist or as a "How To" artistic informational feature please contact me at
heather@azure-islands.com *Thanks...cheers Heather
