Con el ultimo trozo de loneta que dejé sin teñir, por si surgía la ocasión.

Y como estos niños crecen tanto, pues surge.

Hello girls! I´ve  just finished two meters of canvas by making these shorts for Jaime, who, as you can gather from the photos, is crazy about Minecraft!

El modelo es de un Burda, no me preguntéis cual, porque con el lío de revistas que me traigo sería como encontrar el santo Grial, más o menos.

Pero vamos, pantalones sencillitos. Lo único que le he añadido yo ha sido el elástico de esos con ojales, con un par de botones en la cinturilla posterior. Y tampoco es que le quedase mucho por fruncir.

The pattern comes from one of many Burda magazines, but don't ask me which issue it is, as right now all my magazines are not exactly organized and I mixed my Burdas with my Patrones and telling you the exact issue/month/year would be as hard as finding a needle in a haystack.

But, I mean, the pattern is not really groundbreaking, I just added an elastic in the back of the waistband to adjust it better.

Pues lo teñí, allá por septiembre. De azul marino, porque quería hacer un petate igualito, igualito a ESTE/THIS ONE,

El mío salió más barato y encima está forrado de una tela chula.

And where did the other meter and a half of canvas went?
Well, I dyed it back in September. Navy blue. I wanted to make a ditty bag; an exact replica of ESTE/THIS ONE for a friend who went to sail the seven seas...or at least two or three.
Mine is clearly cheaper and it is lined with a very ad-hoc fabric.

Tuve que ir a un taller de toldos para pedir que me hicieran los agujeros con remaches de latón y los de la cincha que sujeta los cabos.

¿Veis los nudos en la parte de abajo de los cabos? Aprendí a hacerlos para que fueran exactamente iguales que los del petate.

Aprendí muchas cosas haciendolo, la verdad. Y recordé algo de geometría.

I went to a canopy workshop to make the brass rivets.

I'm specially proud of having taught myself to make those knots on the ropes. I had to practice a lot for them!

I actually learnt a lot of things while making this bag...a bit of geometry too!

Negroni in Java Wax

Vengo a contaros que me enamoré en París.

 No es extraño; la ciudad del amor y todo eso (o era de la luz? o de la moda? Que lío!). Pero es que yo me he enamorado de las telas africanas. 

Primero fuí, como me aconsejaron, a la PLACE SAINT PIERRE. Tiendas grandísimas y llenas de telas preciosas, pero nada muy diferente a lo que puedes encontrar, pongamos, en Madrid.

Sin embargo, de la que iba para la plaza, encontré un montón de tiendas que sí me entraron por el ojo. Como para no! Metros y metros de tela de algodón en colores vibrantes y con unos prints geométicos preciosos y esperando a que alguien lo transforme en algo bonito. Me apunto!!

Ese barrio de París, que os aconsejo que visitéis, se llama LA GOUTTE D'OR tiene un alto porcentaje de habitantes africanos y es famoso por su mercado al aire libre.

Las tiendas no te venden menos de 5 metros y medio de la misma tela, eso es un concepto un poco raro, lo se, pero si vierais lo que se hacen las habitantes del barrio con ellas lo comprenderíais. 

Tengo dos de estas telas. Bueno, tenía, porque ambas están utilizadas. 

Esta es la primera costura que os enseño, pero no la primera que coso.

Si os interesa el tema de las telas africanas, como se producen, los tipos que existen y por que de repente los diseñadores famosos están tan interesados en ellas, podéis leeros ESTE/THIS POST 

Esta tela en particular es una Java Wax. Buscaba un estampado y unos colores muy discretos , ya que esta camisa es un regalo para alguien que no acostumbra a usar mucho colorín. 

Ever since I went to Paris I have fallen in love... with African Wax. 

I first went to PLACE SAINT PIERRE, lots of fabric shops there, but nothing too far removed from what you can find at home. 

However, on my way to that place, I found several shops that really caught my eye; how wouldn´t they? All those meters of vibrant colours waiting to be  transformed into something pretty!

That neighbourhood of Paris is called LA GOUTTE D'OR and has large numbers of North-Africans and sub-Saharian residents and it is known for its open-air market. 

The shops sell fabrics but not by the meter,you have to buy all six yards of it; a concept totally new to me, but quite understandable if you have a look around and see how the ladies in the neighbourhood are using theirs. 

I have two of them, and I´ve already used both. This is the first thing I show you, but not the first I make, but being so summery I'll wait for better weather.

This particular one is called Java Wax. I was looking for a unisex print, and not too loud. You see: this shirt is not for me, it is a present for someone who is not very used to colours.

Así que parte del metraje de esta preciosidad se ha ido en una COLETTE'S NEGRONI. Me encanta coser esta camisa. Las instrucciones son tan buenas que es un verdadero placer hacerla desde la primera puntada.

Estoy mejorando mucho con las costuras vaqueras (la famosa flat-felled seam) que hacen que quede el interior muy profesional.

So I transformed part of the yardage into a COLETTE'S NEGRONI . I love making this shirt. The instructions are so very good that it is a real pleasure to sew it up from the first to the last stitch.

I'm getting better at flat-felled seams...

Y en los pespuntes decorativos. Vale que no se puede apreciar mucho por las fotos, y que es en blanco, pero creedme: Estupendas!

And mastering top-stitching too! Sadly, you can't appreciate it fully from the photos, but you can take my word for it!

Lo que más me gusta es hacer los puños con esas aberturas. Hacer camisas me parece lo más "técnico" dentro del mundo costuril y muy gratificante.

Just looooved making those cuffs! Shirt making is quite technical, if you know what I mean. But utterly rewarding.

Aprovecho el viaje para mostraros mi nuevo bolso primavera/verano: LE SAC BY CHARO MURCIANO. Un bolso grande y estiloso, perfecto para llevar todas mis cosas, que siempre son muchas. Tenía una versión invernal de Le Sac, pero terminó la temporada en un estado lamentable de tanto uso, y como me pareció tan cómodo he tenido que repetir. Lo bueno es que tenía en casa todo el material ¡hasta la cremallera roja y los botones de cierre!

And I also take the chance  to show you my new bag for the Spring/Summer season: LE SAC BY CHARO MURCIANO. A roomy, yet easy to wear bag perfect for carrying all my stuff. I had a winter version that got really worn and I found it so useful that I HAD to make this one. The good part is that I had all the materials at home!

Pues eso es todo. Como ya viene siendo habitual, pediros disculpas por no estar muy presente en el mundo blogeril. Abro mi bloglovin y me asusto de la cantidad de entradas que escribis, y a veces intento ponerme al día, pero solo hay 24 horas en un día y asuntos más urgentes me tienen ocupada.

Este año ni siquiera podré participar en ZOE'S ME-MADE-MAY, con lo que lo disfruto. 

En fin. No os voy a llorar más que sé que vosotras ya sabeis que es eso de estar ocupada.

The Sports Bag.

¡¡Por fín una bolsa de deporte a mi medida!!

Después de pasear arriba y abajo una bolsa medio destrozada de Kellogs, y otra del año de maricastaña, creo que ya era imperativo que me hiciera una bolsa medio decente. 

En mi  mercadillo hay lonetas estampadas a porrillo (ahora, no pidais estampado fino, majas, todo así a lo bestia) y al ver esta de las "converse" ya no lo pude dejar pasar. Era el destino que me decía: hazte la bolsa, hazte la bolsa...o igual no era el destino y era CHARO, que en cuestión de bolsos es la que corta el bacalao.

At last, a sports bag that fits my needs!!

After using assorted commercial bags (the one from Kellogs was not that bad) or really old ones, it was imperative that a sewist like me would make one that she didn´t have to hide from the sight of the world.

There are a lot of print canvas fabrics at my local market (don´t look for delicate, small prints though. It is all big and bright!) and when I saw this Converse print, I just couldn´t ignore it. I don´t enjoy making bags. I love the creations from this lady CHARO, she is a master, but I dont feel comfortable sewing 90º angles.

La podía haber acolchado como sugería el patrón, aunque creo que mi cupo anual ya lo he cubierto con ESTE/THIS. Solo he entretelado la parte de abajo hasta donde empieza la cinta. Eso sí, una entretela de las más tiesas que he visto nunca. El fondo lo he reforzado también con doble capa de goma eva.

In the pattern they suggest to quilt the fabric, but I already covered my annual quilting with ESTE/THIS other bag. I interfaced the bottom and sides up to the point where the strap starts. I used one of the stiffest interfacing I´ve know so far. Also I reinforced that area with some rubbery material, I cannot find the English name for it. Something similar would be "Soft and Stable" that I saw in a tutorial HERE

¡Si es que si no caso algo, no soy feliz! Tambien me gusta el detalle de usar dos cremalleras y abrirlo desde el centro y no desde un lado.

I just had to match something, right? I like the use of two zippers meeting at the center, so that you don´t have to open the bag from a side.

El interior. Hay bolsillos dentro. Dos normales y otro con cremallera. Más los dos exteriores. Como contraste usé otra loneta de rayas. En las instrucciones no llevaba bies en las costuras, pero la verdad, yo creo que siempre queda mejor si se lo añades. Para rellenar el bies use una lana gordita que tenía por casa.

Inside: two open pockets and one zippered , plus two outside that makes 5 pockets to loose the keys more efficiently. I used that striped canvas as contrast and even though the instructions didn´t call for it, I added the piping on the seams. I used thick wool to make it.

The Wool Bag. Bolso Calentito.

¡Hola, amiguitas! Cuanto tiempo ¿eh? Es que no llego nunca al RUMS , que le vamos a hacer...

He estado cosiendo, pero todavía no os lo puedo enseñar (¡Aaah, se siente! :) He seguido con el tema de los bañadores, pero no hay nada reseñable que enseñaros . Y tambien he cosido un bolso.

Necesito urgentemente una bolsa de deporte, mis hijos idem y ¿que me coso? Pues un bolso elegante y regio... Bueno, ha sido por practicar el guateado y eso. Será por excusas...

Y cuando encuentre las telas adecuadas haré las otras dos bolsas: La mediana para el gimnasio y la grande por si alguien me invita a un fin de semana en un "resort"  de lujo o similar. Será por pedir...

Hello friends! Long time no see! I´ve been sewing a lot, things that I cannot show you yet and I´ve also been working on my swimsuit, but nothing remarkable... And I sewed up a bag. I urgently need a sports bag, and so do my kids, and what do I make? an elegant bag!  Well, my excuse was learning how to quilt...

When I find the perfect fabric I will also make the other two bags: one for the gym and the other one for a hypothetical weekend in a luxirious spa or something... Dreaming is free, right? ;)

¡Hombre, no me digais! Es como para quererlos todos, ¿no?

La máxima dificultad ha sido encontrar los artículos metálicos Las argollas deberian haber sido rectangulares, y yo llevo de las de sujetar toldos ( lo que tienen en la ferretería) Y los mosquetones tambien bastorros, pero esa es la maravilla del DIY, te apañas con lo que tienes y consigues un resultado más o menos digno.

Aren´t they cute? The most difficult part was finding the "hardware" those D rings and the carabiner (?) I had to buy them in the hardware store, where they normally sell them for hanging the sunshades. That´s the beauty of the DIY, using what you can get to achieve decent results.

El guateado ha sido lo más engorroso (que no dificil, eh?) Si quereis probar y nunca lo habeis hecho yo os recomiendo el fantástico y clarísimo tutorial de LA MODISTA DE ATENEA a.k.a. Diana. Yo he usado la barra para acolchar que tiene mi máquina, pero el truco de la cinta de carrocero me parece genial. 

Quilting was the most tedious part, not difficult, though. There is a great tutorial from the lovely Diana of  LA MODISTA DE ATENEA. I used this little bar that came with the sewing machine, but the trick she uses is really clever

And the last photo. As you can see the bag falls at the exact length to go bumping the bag with the hip as you walk. Something that I dislike a lot. But, the short handles are just fine!

Refashion: From Biker´s Pants to Fashion Bag

¡Hola amigas costureras! Antes de nada daros las gracias por todos los comentarios positivos acerca del chandal de la niña. Os puedo asegurar que se lo ha puesto un montón esta semana, y se lo he tenido que lavar ya un par de veces porque "es tan cómodo, mamá"

Hello sewing friends! Thank you for all your kind comments regarding the girl´s tracksuit. She wants to wear it all the time because "it´s so comfy!"

No quiero seguir cosiendo para el frio. Hace demasiado frio para coser para el calor.
¿Que hago? Bolsos.
No soy una persona de bolso. Llevo normalmente las cosas en los bosillos (de ahí la necesidad de ellos en todas las prendas) o en la bolsa de deporte que es una del Kellogs (si,si, como una campeona) o ESTAS que cosí, pero que son un poco endebles y raras de forma.
Toda mi experiencia bolseril se resume en esto:

I don´t want to sew for the cold weather. But it´s too cold to sew for the warm weather.
 What do I make? A bag!
I´m not a bag-person. I carry my stuff in my pockets. Don´t get me wrong: I own some bags, I just find them a nuisance.

Me acordé de un blog que solía leer cuando empecé a coser,Very Praire. Kristin, guapa a rabiar y talentosa, dejó de blogear a finales del 2010 y echo de menos sus creaciones.

Una de las cosas que más me llamó la atención fué su BAG, oseasé bolso que era una copia del que lleva Anne Hathaway en una escena de "El diablo se viste de Prada" HERE

And I remembered a blog that I used to read when I started sewing Very Praire. Kristin, so very beautiful and talented stopped blogging back in 2010, and I really miss her makes.

One of the things that I liked was her BAG. A knock-off of the one Anne Hathaway wore at "The Devil Wears Prada" HERE

Para hacerlo ella usó el patrón LaRue de Hot Patterns. Entonces era gratis, pero ya no. Y dada mi poca experiencia con los bolsos y el cuero, no quería gastarme los 15 dolares que cuesta. ¿Que hago? Pues pedir ayuda a Charo de Cosiendo y Aprendiendo, que es la maga de los bolsos y una persona maravillosa y ella no solo me ayuda, sino que me manda el patrón porque ella ya lo tenía.¡GRACIAS CHARO! Es que no se puede ser más expléndida y maravillosa.

She used this Hot Pattern LaRue. That was then a free pattern but it´s not anymore. But I have a friend who is outstanding at making bags, Charo Murciano from Cosiendo y Aprendiendo, and when I asked for help she provided me with the pattern that she already had. How great is the blogging world?!

Abrí las costuras de los pantalones por la parte de dentro y centré el patrón en la costura exterior. No hubo problemas cosiendo el cuero. La única parte dificil fué terminar el asa. Traté de hacerlo con cuero pero no funcionó. Asi que lo hice con una tira al bies de la tela de forro. Ahora se ve por afuera pero me gusta así. (El que no se consuela...)

La tela de forro es la misma que la de Este Abrigo

I opened the leg´s inner seams of the pant and placed the pattern centering the side seams and cut. I had no problems sewing the leather, the only difficult part was the hole for the arm. I tried binding with a strip of leather, but it didn´t work so I used a bias. It shows in the outer part, but I like it like this.

For the lining I used some leftover fabric from This Coat . I added a zippered pocket and two unzippered ones.

Hacer el "rabito" fué muy facil. Usé pegamento de cuero y una pinza para sujetarlo ;)

Making the tassel was easier than expected. I used leather glue ;)

¿Os acordais de Ester? Comic Bags (But not meant to make you Laugh)

Buenas...
Hace un par de meses encontré esta tela plastificada, o Hule como la llama mi madre, en el mercadillo. Y, como antigua fan de Ester, no me pude resistir. No sabía ni para que lo iba a utílizar.
Creo que no lo he mencionado antes en el blog, pero además de enseñar inglés a mis pequeñitos, soy monitora desde hace varios años en un lugar que me encanta, donde viven un montón de personas a las que aprecio de veras. El Secadero. !Un beso chicas!
¿De qué soy monitora? Pues depende del año: De aerobic, pilates, step, zumba...¡hasta danza del vientre! Este año ha tocado ciclismo indoor, ya sabeis...bici estatica, música y a quemar calorías y esa es una de las razones por las que en verano no me ha dado tiempo a coser...estaba preparandome para esto.
Pero tenía un problema tecnico:
De las clases de inglés, donde me gusta ir bien vestida, voy directa a las clases de spinning. Allí me cambio. Estoy dos horas y cuarto sentada en la bici y cuando termino estoy empapada, pero no me puedo quedar a ducharme y claro tampoco puedo ponerme la ropa "bonita"ni ir con lo puesto y arriesgarme a coger un catarro morrocotudo. Asi que necesitaba una bolsa para llevar un chandal abrigado, una bolsa plastificada para meter la ropa "mojada" y otra para los zapatos.
He utilizado este tutorial que me ha encantado. Os lo recomiendo.

Seems like I´m descending  the sewing skills ladder, but there you go...Bags!
I rather needed them as I had a bit of a technical problem:
You see, besides being an English teacher for little children, I´m an indoor activities instructor. From aerobic to zumba, from Pilates to belly dance, you name it! This year it has become tougher, as I´ve been appointed the Spinning or indoor cycling instructor, one of the reasons this summer I couldn´t sew much, as I was preparing for this (not a fan of bicycles back then)
The thing is that I like wearing nice clothes to the English classes then I go straight to the gym,change, sit on the bicycle for two hours and a half then have to run home for a shower and a kiss goodnight to the kids, no time for shower on the spot, so I needed a big bag to put a fresh tracksuit to allow me get home without catching my death, and a smaller waterproof bag to put all the sweaty clothes until I get home. I also made another for the shoes.
I used a comic oilcloth that I found at the local market and reminded me of the comics I used to read when I was 10.

Cosas de niños - Sewing for the little ones

Una de niños.
Empiezo por lo facil. Tenía una telita que no me daba para un vestido, y una puntilla muy bonita de mi madre. El patrón no sé de que Burda lo saqué, se ata con botones por detrás y tiene bolsillos. Pues nada, una batista de forrar por abajo y¡ voilá!
Starting with the easy one. I had this small piece of fabric, not enough for a dress, and a very nice lace ending from my mother. I don´t remember from which Burda did the pattern come from, it has got pockets and buttons in the back, so it just needed a little white lining and voilá!

Quedó bastante bien, para mi poca pericia fruncidora. Así que me animé a hacerle un chaleco a juego, otra vez el 614 del Burda extra kids del 2010. La tela, la que me sobró de hacer un cobertor para el sofá de casa... me gusta el naranja. Un detallito en el delantero de la tela de la falda y listo.

It came out all right, despite my bad gathering technique. So I made a vest to match from Burda Kids 2010, from leftover fabric that I had from my sofa cover. An appliqué from the skirt with my dear Therm o web and ready.

Para el cole les hice una mochila y una bolsa usando este conceptoaquí. Y usando un tutorial y patón de aquí.

 I made two school bags for them using ideas from the links above.

Y a la "seño" de mi hijo le gustó tanto  que le hice una a ella, pero un poco más fina, usando este tutorial fantástico aquí.
