There's a market for everything

Well, I thought I had seen it all. Now you can use an app and pay $2.00 for a Diet Coke, pulled from the back of a bike.

Art as Soap, Soap as Art

We found this fellow one day in a market in SoCo peddling soap inspired by his art. Today is theme day on City Daily Photo and the theme is 'creative artisans.' You can click here to see other City Daily Photo theme day entries from around the world.

FFP shot this picture of these wonderful rainbow carrots at Saturday's market.

I'll have another round!

The Farmers Market a block from our condo tower was in full swing Saturday morning.  This creative vendor had four types of Kombucha on tap.

Kicking off the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar

Every year there is an event (now held in the Palmer Events Center) that is near and dear to my heart. Why? Because it is a Christmas event but starts at a respectable distance into the season. It features unique artists and purveyors with something a little different than your malls. And they have several musical acts a day. Oh, and they serve alcohol. It's the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar.

We noticed that Ruby Jane and her band were kicking off the festivities yesterday. So we walked over to Palmer at noon and caught both their sets. That's Ruby Jane fiddling and the wonderful Trevor LaBonte playing lead guitar. The fun goes on 11 A.M. until 11 P.M. right up to Christmas Eve I think. You can buy handmade belts, vintage event posters, art, toys, geegaws, jewelry and other stuff while listening to music and, if you like, having a nip of Christmas cheer.

Really Awesome Pickles

Nothing like some homemade style okra pickles. Okra actually makes great crisp and tasty pickles. At the downtown farmer's market, of course.

Market Squash, Peppers and Eggs

Forrest shot this back in August when we were preparing for theme day. This fellow had some great looking squash, peppers and eggs at our downtown farmer's market.

Olive Oil at the Farmer's Market

Karen Lee has an olive ranch in Carrizo Springs down near the border with Mexico. She was in Austin one summer Saturday providing tastes of extra virgin oil, infused oils and infused balsamic vinegars at the Farmer's Market in Republic Square. Stunning and made in Texas. Today is theme day on City Daily Photo and the theme is Open Air Market. This downtown market is only a block from our condo and has been featured before. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants in this theme day.

Throw Them a Bone

Lots of people bring their dogs to the outdoor farmer's market in Republic Square near our house. The wares we found in one booth were baked goods especially for the furry friends including a bone-shaped cake.

Hotter Than a Pepper Sprout

I haven't been getting a lot of pictures around Austin lately. My excuses? Very hot temperatures cooled only by some brief rain and over a week spent in NYC. Anyway, last August I shot the Hatch Green Chiles on sale at sale at Whole Foods. Their season is probably a month away...but with our record high temps we are sweating NOW.

Baked Goods at the Farmers' Market

I asked the girl in the blue shirt (with the purple hair) if I could take her picture with her baked goods. She signaled for the gal in green to get up from a chair and be in the picture. Maybe the bakery (Living Arts Bakery) is really hers. They are usually set up in the Farmers' Market on the northeast corner of booths. We didn't have their baked goods yesterday but we have and they are great.

I didn't get their names because the cell phone conversation seemed to be consuming their energy although they seemed happy to be snapped.

Can it Be Fall?

Well, there has been a little cool in the air in the mornings, but the surest sign that it might really be fall in our often hot Capital City is this pumpkin display at Whole Foods Market at Fifth and Lamar. FFP and I went in and had a vegan taco salad with faux meat and faux sour cream. Very good, actually.

Some Squash, Baby

These veggies really look delightful, don't they? This is another shot from the market Saturday by FFP.

Went to Market

FFP went to the Farmers Market that is a stone's throw from the condo. It's so close that he went over there and thought "I should have brought the camera." So he went back for it. Which is good because he got this great picture of Purple Commanche tomatoes (they turn purple when ripe in four days according to the farmer), other tomatoes, squash and garlic. We bought one of the tomatoes. We may report in this space on its purple hue. FFP saw lots of people he knew at the market. See here.

Hotter than a Pepper Sprout

Temperatures have been flirting with (and embracing) three Fahrenheit digits every day. Sometimes food can be hot around here, too, but the weather and walking around downtown looking for shade can make one long for chilled soup and salad. I took this picture of peppers on offer at Boggy Creek Farm in July four years ago. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere I hope you are finding the weather tolerable or a way to keep cool.
