Big and brassy

The Austin Jazz Band played at the Elephant Room the other night. How they all got on the stage is beyond me.

Our gal Liz is crooning again.

It's been a while since I ran a shot of Liz Morphis and the Violet Crown Revue. Here they are at The Elephant Room on a recent night. Love those tennies, Liz!

Jazzing it up

We enjoyed terrific jazz at the Elephant Room the other night --  here you see Andre Heyward on trombone. He is an internationally-known player who has performed with the likes of Wynton Marsalis.

Hot jazz in a cool venue

This all-star band of musicians was wailing at the Elephant Room the other night. A nice couple from Nebraska let us sit with them.

The Pharaohs all back together

The Jazz Pharaohs got back together for a performance on a recent Friday. Here you see our pal Liz doing the vocal honors. That's Freddie on trombone, back for a night. He lives in Indiana now.

Jazzing it up

Our friend Elias Haslinger (on sax) was leading a terrific band at Elephant Room the other night. The trombone player has been part of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the guitar player teaches at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. I am always amused when people in other parts of the world are shocked! shocked I tell you! that we have jazz players in Austin.

Our Liz

We haven't posed a shot of songstress Liz Morphis in a while. Here she is looking her lovely best on stage at the Elephant Room. That's her bass player Aaron in the background.

A Most Unusual Sound

We stopped in the Elephant Room last Tuesday and heard John Doyle and Stanley Smith jamming. John played clarinet (the regular B-Flat one) as well as jug and this horn in the picture: a contralto clarinet. Some amazing sounds and tunes from these two.

And All That Jazz

The Elephant Room is about a six block walk from our condo. Tonight, for the price of a couple of drinks, we were treated to music from seven amazing instrumentalists plus the song stylings of none other than Liz Morphis.

Jazz Pharoahs rule

Here you see singer extraordinaire Liz Morphis with a new lineup of The Jazz Pharaohs at The Elephant Room. It's always fun to see this group perform. The guitar player at the end is named Albany, by the way. She brings a new vibe to the group with her quiet, centered and easygoing style of playing and singing. All of the players are excellent.

Jazzin the House

We went to a concert at the Elephant Room not long ago and heard a fantastic jazz guitar player named Darin Layne. This shot captured the energy he brought to his performance. Bass player Chris Marsh and a fine young drummer were backing him up.
