Remnants

Jovita's Restaurant on South First was caught up in a drug raid and the property was under the control of the U.S. Marshall for a long time. On a recent walk we saw that the building was razed. This patch of tile remained.

Progress

An old building that housed part of the city's electric utility is being chewed up by the giant claw to make way for this high rise. Jackie shot this for us.

Coming Down

There is so much construction downtown that we could fill this blog with pictures with cranes and partially-finished buildings. But sometimes it's fun to see things come down. I shot this from our parking garage last month as the small building next door to our high rise (a print shop) was demolished. A small office building is going in there.

Coming Down

Lots of Austin's cranes are being used to build things, but the decomissioned Holly Street Power Plant is coming down. We walked over to the east side on the trail one day last month and snapped this picture across one of the playing fields.

Aliens Have Landed

Not Really. But they did fell the old water tower at the Green Water Treatment Plant that's being decomissioned a block from us. I'm not sure it was supposed to fall on those sewer tiles and, sadly, we didn't see it come down. Here is a picture from way back there when it was still upright.

Picture of the Year---Cheating a Little

The City Photo Bloggers have a theme day on the first of each month. The (optional) theme for today's post is "photo of the year 2007." Says to post your favorite photo of the year from yours or someone else's blog. We didn't start Austin, Texas Daily Photo until May. But in February, a shell of a building, abandoned by Intel in the last bust, was imploded and the land sold to the Feds. When I photographed the mess left after implosion a few days later, you could see our future home (the 360 condos) in the background, still nowhere near its future height. I have selected this picture, even though it appeared on my other blog, because it stands for 2007 to me and shows things in a state they'll never be in again. (We hope anyway.) I also made a video of the implosion on YouTube and FFP loves to laugh at it because you can hear me saying 'it didn't work!' because I really thought they'd implode it into less of a mess.

I have loaded a list below of links to other sites signed up for posting 'photo of the year 2007.' Should be interesting.
