Dry docked

To contrast with all the photos we have posted of boats in Town Lake, here's one of a vessel we recently passed on a walk. Looks like it hasn't seen its natural element in a while.

House in the Trees

When we went to the East Austin Studio Tour a couple of weekends ago, some artists sharing a house as a work space invited us to tour their backyard where they had this wonderful retreat in the trees. Tree house, no trees necessary.

Theme Day: Metal

We are soon leaving our big yard and its junk metal musicians behind. This is a detail of the innards of the sousaphone player. I've shown you some of this sculpture before. The French horn player here and the trumpet player here. Since I soon won't own that backyard I thought it most appropriate for theme day to show it. We are probably leaving most of the band behind for the new owners but we are probably selling the trumpet player since we found a willing buyer.

The City Daily Photo group always has a theme day on the first of the month. This month's theme is metal

Ta-Da! Austin Daily Photo is One Year Old

Yep. We started this blog on May 17, 2007. FFP had seen Eric's PDP and some others and decided we should do one for our fair city. Someone had run a blog for Austin (here) and then given up the prior November. We settled on using blogger and the http://austintexasdailyphoto.blogspot.com/ URL to distinguish us from those quitters. (Just kidding. I don't know why anyone does this for no remuneration. Don't know why I do it!) Of course, the Texas distinguishes us from Austin, Minnesota, too but, really when most people hear 'Austin' do they think of other states? I'm just saying. And digressing.

Anyway, we have now posted 366 times (it was a leap year) and today's birthday post is 367. It shows our backyard trumpeter blowing a fanfare accompanied by the rest of the backyard band. (You can see the French horn player in the background.)

It Might Rain

I took this photo in March of our current backyard in the rain. (Enlarge to search for the Sousaphone player.) I was casting about for a 'water' picture for theme day and then didn't use it so I thought I'd show it today when it might rain according to the weather. (And we think we've seen a bit of a sprinkle and my dad reports some rain from his part of town.) The picture was taken through the glass because it was raining hard and I didn't want to step out on the porch.

Water Feature

Soon the water features in our lives will be: (1) a sliver of Lady Bird Lake glimpsed from our balcony; (2) the pool down one floor on the other side of the building; (3) walking down to the hike and bike for better Lady Bird Lake views; and (4) the gentle (we hope) sounds of the Austin chilled water plant on top of the garage across the street. Currently though we are like most home owners and have heard that 'water features' are selling points. The one bird is supposed to recirculate the water into the pond but we frequently have trouble keeping that mechanism unclogged and keeping the GFI from tripping. Another simpler bubbler in the center of a concrete ball in another pond works better but is less dramatic.

Water is the theme for today. (No fooling.) Here are some sites that are participating. Some may have forgotten, some may not have posted yet and some may be into tomorrow but sail around the world...looking for water.

Our Back Yard Band

Here is the French horn player in our back yard band-- we have five musicians in it -- a tuba, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and (as you see) French horn. The French horn player is the only female.

We commissioned the crafting of these musicians by local artisans years ago and they have given us no end of pleasure. I do love our back yard, but it's like being married to a "trophy spouse." High maintenance indeed. Linda put it beautifully-- we might as well have mulched up $100 bills and used them for fertilizer.

No doubt, I'll miss my musicians when we leave this place next spring to move to the condo downtown, but "some doors close and others open."

Looking Out Our Window

Here is the view from the back window of our home's entertainment room. We see this panorama when we wake up each day and let the dog out. In this photo, you can see four of our five "band members" who populate our back yard. Left to right: metal clarinet, French horn (small in back), tuba, and trumpet. We do love our big back yard. We have been in this house almost thirty years and it still is a wonder to me when I look at it. (Of course, if you click on this photo you will see a larger version which better shows the French horn and tuba.) The yellow house is a tool shed. Oh-- and the other band member is a trombone player-- but he's so far over to the right in a sitting spot we call the "Zen area" that I couldn't get him in the photo. The French hornist is definitely female, by the way!
