Living Under A Bridge

Near our highrise, there is a pedestrian bridge over Shoal Creek. There are apparently homeless people living underneath it. Among the mess is a rental bike. If a hard rain comes, this camp would be in some danger, I think. It's a shame people have to live this way.

Not a good place to pitch a tent

Spotted this encampment beneath a bridge by our place. Since Shoal Creek can rise to a torrent in minutes, not such a good idea, in my opinion.

Last bit of Construction on Shoal Creek Downtown

In addition to the Proper Hotel and condos at left, the Northshore visible behind the equipment and 500 West Second (aka the Google building) which is north of the Northshore, there will be a fourth building on the site of old Green Water Treatment plant. I shot a picture of the drilling equipment being used from the trail beside the Central Library on the other side of the creek.

Easy Access to the Trails

This is FFP walking toward the pedestrian underpass at Shoal Creek and Cesar Chavez. From our condo we can use this reopened piece of the Shoal Creek Trail to access the Butler Trail...and avoid crossing any streets.

Spanning the creek

I'll avoid the urge to make any comments about golden arches. Progress is being made on the new bridge over Shoal Creek which lets Second Street go west through to the Seaholm Project.

Fallout!

You wouldn't know it to see this dry creek bed, but in the flood not long ago, big trees like this got knocked down.

Shoal Creek flowing to the lake

Here is a shot of Shoal Creek, close to our building, one day after the big storm. It usually just sits there with a few puddles.

Water in the creek for a change

These folks were enjoying the water in Shoal Creek the other day after a rain.

New Bridge

This is Shoal Creek sporting a new span at what will be Second Street as it is opened between San Antonio and West. The bridge is under construction. Thanks Jackie for the nice photo from Cesar Chavez. Foreground right is Austin Music Hall with the 360's parking garage and pool deck behind it and the new Seventh Apartments to the left. (They are topped out but not finished. They are between Rio Grande and Nueces on Seventh.) Our neighborhood is changing fast.

Some bird's nest!

Somebody's old mattress wound up in a tree after a recent downpour. I wish people would not chunk items into the creeks. My guess is that some homeless person was probably using this mattress to sleep on and it washed away.

Be Observant...it's Spring!

One of the top signs that it is Spring in Austin are Red Bud trees blooming. You can see a branch in bloom to the left of the amusing warning sign.

Regal Graffiti

Not sure what the meaning is of this graffiti on the Fifth Street bridge abutment is, but I recorded it for posterity a few Saturdays ago.

Remains after Rain

After some rains and high water on Shoal Creek these remnants of blankets and clothing remained in the trees. We were walking on the Shoal Creek Trail near Fifth Street.

Portage

After some recent rain Shoal Creek had been reduced to a trickle but these bikers still had to gingerly get across to continue on the trail.

Water's Edge

It is theme day at City Daily Photo. The theme is "water's edge." I shot this view of the edge of Lady Bird Lake where Shoal Creek empties into it. The little bridge connects the Hike and Bike trail across the gap. See other City Daily Photo interpretations of the theme here.

Shoring it up

Linda and I were walking home from a stroll along the lake Sunday and I noticed this retaining grid along Shoal Creek. It has been installed to prevent erosion into the creek. I zoomed in on it and got this visual.
