Streetscape

It's the first of the month so it's Theme Day at City Daily Photo. Our assignments this year are to show elements of our city. This month it's a streetscape. Something typical or unusual or just something we like along a street. We chose this one. The owl is one of a pair in front of the new Proper Hotel and Condominiums. The view is looking west from the bridge over Shoal Creek on Second Street. The photographer shown is FFP. One can see the Austonian and the Ashton in the distance. The construction on the right will be an office people housing more Google employees. Across the street from that is the Northshore. I bet some pictures of the Butterfly Bridge show up here eventually from FFP's viewpoint! To see what other participating cities posted for Streetscape, click here.

A Gift for a Special Someone

The shop window at Mercury Design on West Second. Surely you can find the perfect gift here!

A Work of Art

Here is FFP posing in this stunning work by artist Josef Kristofoletti. According the Austin's Art in Public Places: "Topping ten stories tall, Tau Ceti creates a stunning optic experience as sunlight from surrounding buildings refract and correspond with the painted gradient color spectrum throughout the day. Tau Ceti references a single star in the constellation Cetus (pronounced: see tus) that is spectrally similar to our own sun." This is at the corner of Brazos and East Second.

Mural Colors

Great use of this space on a parking garage wall. This is on Second and Brazos near the JW Marriott.

Nice sentiment

Not sure that it makes sense, but a happy thought, anyhow.

Dramatic look

I took this shot as we walked home from the library the other night. What a view, and it is a few blocks from where we live. It's still hard for this Austin boy to believe that we live downtown.

What else is there to say?

The shops on Second Street hope that you'll subscribe to this philosophy.

Google Fiber?

Second Street Art

This sculpture is outside the movie theater in downtown that we like so much. Yeah, well, "Keeping Austin Weird" is a way of life!

New Shop

A Swatch store didn't make it in this location.  Now electric bikes are having a go at it. On Second Street.

Sensual?

It's the first of the month and, of course, it's theme day at the City Daily Photo portal. I shot this picture of the window of a lingerie store on Second Street last year. It's funny how mannequins can evoke sensuality, isn't it? Click here to see what others have posted for this theme day.

Work in Progress

We don't usually walk on the north side of Caesar Chavez across the creek. (Until recently it was impassable because of construction.) Thought I should snap a picture while our building was still in the picture. The cranes are for two more buildings (the Proper and Third+Shoal) rising between the (as yet unopened) Second Street bridge and our place on the right. You can see the Independent going up on the left.

Another shot from the Electric Drive event. This piece of Second Street has places to charge your gadgets as well as electric cars. The old Seaholm Power plant in the background has been recommissioned for businesses and a restaurant.

Friday, April 14, 2017

Jackie was on hand to celebrate the ceremonial launch of Electric Drive. Mayor Adler and other city staffers were celebrating Austin’s progressive work toward alternative energy sources. The mystery we raised about the kiosk in the background has been resolved. It is indeed a place to charge your gadgets from the sun's energy.

Abandoned with the Bird

Jackie found this one day on the 3rd Street Pedestrian Bridge. As with all our abandoned stuff photos, she didn't move or tamper with it 'in situ.' That's the new 2nd Street (auto and pedestrian) bridge in the background. And the new trail leading to and under it. Neither has opened as we await completion of the new library and other buildings.

Kiosk for Something

Jackie and I both were wondering about this new structure on Electric Drive (aka Second Street). She says:
This looks very weird to us; needs a palapa with a bar and bartender making pina coladas on the left side (east) of the bar stools.
I have a theory that it is going to have phone charging stations eventually. It is near the electric car charging stations.

Getting Ready to Google

Glass is being raised for this office building near us that will house a bunch of Google employees.
