Mr. Smoke

I suppose that's a dragon on the side of the Mr. Smoke shop. Quite the elaborate mural.

Austin and Texas Murals

When our dear friends from the Northwest were visiting we walked up Guadalupe ("The Drag") one day. The Artist's Market was devoid of booths this day and I shot a picture of FFP and our friend Tina surrounded by the murals.

A few of our historic moonlight towers survive. This one is the at Guadalupe and Ninth.

Here you see Linda checking out a futuristic wall painting on The Drag.

Welcoming entrance at a local church

Glad to see that this church welcomes people of all sexual orientations.

Special meaning

This vertical piece of glass that has an "Open" sign on it is located where a newsstand used to be in 1966 on Guadalupe Street, across from the University of Texas. Along with two of my friends, I was standing just to the right of it, when a bullet came past my right ear and killed a man who was in the doorway of the newsstand. It is a memory that I have tried to shake for 52 years now.

Spinning the tunes

We walked up Guadalupe the other day and I spotted this old-time turntable in the window at a hip clothing store. I'd almost forgotten these boxy things existed.

Another mural!

We were walking down the Drag the other day and saw this mural for the first time. ("Taco Bell loves Austin.") Lots of good artists in town.

Protect Ya Neck

Not sure I understand this mural on Guadalupe. But it's striking.

Reuse Mural

The old Trafton and Son Tile place on Guadalupe is now a Planet K. We showed a mural on the north side the other day. This work (using left over tile found inside?) is on the south side.

Fading squares of memories

This rapidly-deteriorating logo in the sidewalk is all that remains of Renfro's Rexall Drug Store on "The Drag" across from the University of Texas campus. That store is where I holed up during the Tower Sniper rampage on August 1, 1966 in which 17 people were killed and over thirty were injured.

Today is theme day at City Daily Photo. The theme is squares. Click here to see other city's interpretations.

Preservation

There was an old apartment building at this location on Guadalupe near 18th Street. It's been razed with the doorway surround restored on the new roomy sidewalk. Interesting landmark!

Serving Longhorns Since 1926

Well, they don't really serve Longhorn meat (Hut's does I think) but this painting is on the venerable burger joint Dirty Martin's Kumback on Guadalupe. They've been serving good old greasy burgers and tater tots to UT Longhorn fans since 1926.
