Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

Le Chabada Angers 3rd April 2012

Okay then, here an incomplete recording of the band playing in the French city of Angers on the European leg of the 'Giants' tour. It's a shame that this is both 1) incomplete and 2) a bit bizarrely edited as the sound is quite good. The editing is either an indication that this was a broadcast or that the taper was not a fan of any new material, this being a gig played in 2012 featuring no material recorded after 1986!

But go easy it is this one's birthday!

O2 Academy Liverpool 5th March 2012

Whatever you do don't catch the bass players eye! Liverpool 2012 and someone has rather unwisely lobbed a pint at Burnel. This action was unwise on two counts... one, only a fool would pay O2 Academy beer prices only to throw it at the stage and two, it's a sure fire way to get the bass players dander up! The clip has been on Youtube for some years now and indeed some manner of retribution for that ill advised act was meted out to the culprit at the front of the stage.

Shame really to do such a thing, especially when the band are part way through a particularly enjoyable set as was the case on the 2012 tour when the band had a new album to promote.

O2 Academy Sheffield 23rd March 2012

One from 2012's 'Giants' tour here and a night out in Sheffield. This was the set that contained 'Shut Up', a welcome hangover from the 'Black and White' set that the band played at the 2011 Convention. For some reason, this crowd favourite didn't make it into the 'Black and White' tour that the band undertook in 2016.

Peter Murphy The Observatory Santa Ana CA 30th December 2012

So this brings me back to some more familiar turf at least. Bauhaus are a band that just won't lay down and die. They are the Undead band, such is their legacy within the realms of post punk that people just won't let them go. Dave Vanian may have gone on record slating Pete Murphy for stealing his vampyric image, but certainly no band at that time sounded like Bauhaus and it didn't take too long before they were copied and a whole 'gothic' scene took to the wing as a result. Bauhaus' albums have stood the test of time I think and the members are still active. Peter Murphy has a new album out and it sounds great.... actually it sounds very like a Bauhaus album!

Anyway I digress, back to the recording at hand. This is from the 'Mr Moonlight' tour, a celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Bauhaus. sadly, it would appear that Pete Murphy has a few demons to battle, but on stage he is a great performer/frontman. I am glad I got to see Bauhaus back in '98 (first time comeback!).

Jah Wobble And Keith Levine (Metal Box In Dub) Village Underground Shoreditch London 25th May 2012 (TFTLTYTD#16)

A long time before Frank Carter or Danny Boyle were getting under John Lydon's skin, he had another thorn in his side to contend with in the form of former mate and band member Jah Wobble. In 2012, original members of Public Image Limited, Jah Wobble and Keith Levene revived 'Metal Box', an album widely revered as a post punk classic. This was an album that was recorded and released at a time when both musicians were a part of PIL.

John Lydon didn't approve of this line of action by his former band mates, I cannot recall the thrust of his argument but as I remember he was quite vocal in his condemnation of the project. But in parallel with the recent Pistols row, if you are a musician who, along with others, were responsible for the creation of a body of music, isn't that part of your legacy as well, be it 'Never Mind The Bollocks' or 'Metal Box'? Of course John Lydon was pivotal in the making of those two albums but he wasn't a one man band! I have no idea of the legal issues around Public Image Limited, but I would assume that Lydon has the lion's share over the rights to the band name, logo etc and a revived PiL are still touring... so I kind of struggle to see his issues over this one.

Keith Levene, the guitarist on this recording was a rule breaking guitarist with a fine punk pedigree (The Flowers of Romance, The Clash and Public Image Limited). He died of complications of liver cancer in November 2022.

Thanks to the original Dime uploader.

European TV and Radio March 2012

The Spring of 2012 really did throw up a bonanza of quality live material (audio and video) as the band crisscrossed France and Belgium visiting radio stations to promote the then new offering 'Giants'. This I think is the last that I have to be posted. Just search '2012' and the rest is there.

The Grand Studio RTL 21 Feb 2012 Audio and Video

Back in 2012, the band went to quite a lot of trouble to promote the then new album 'Giants' on the Continent. This is one of a handful of promotional visits that The Stranglers (as here) or JJ and Baz paid to various radio stations in France and Belgium to plug the album.

Here for the first time is a set that I put together of the band's gig at The Grand Studio RTL station in France. Part of the set was also streamed.

The Undertones Epic Studios Norwich 10th October 2012

Last night The Undertones played Koko in Camden. The world would be a much poorer place without them. In these days of uncertainty when the world seems to have gone mad..... and that is most mornings if Trump has been online, the fact that a group of men approaching 60 can sing songs about Chocolate and Girls is a cause for celebration! Family entertainment indeed!

JJ Burnel and Baz Warne on BBC Radio 4's 'Loose Ends' March 2012

Here is a new one to me. Back in March 2012, JJ and Baz provided the musical portion of an episode of BBC Radio 4's 'Loose Ends' programme. Here then is an acoustic version of 'Boom Boom' followed by the briefest anecdote from Blur's Alex James concerning fellow cheese enthusiast, one Dave Greenfield. Thanks for the share!
