Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

Devo Whistler Medals Plaza Whistler Canada 22nd February 2010

As the 2026 Winter Olympics draws to a close in Italy, it seems to be an opportune to  post this appearance at an earlier Olympiad by those flower-potted oddballs Devo. Now I love Devo and really enjoyed their 'last' UK appearance a couple of years ago. It was therefore with a raised eyebrow that I saw the announcement that they are back on these shores in the summer with the B52s, The Rezillos and Lene Lovich.... playing dates with a ticket price that raised the other eyebrow.

Whatever, it's nothing new for rock bands to announce the final tour only to reappear on a stage near you just a couple of years down the line.

Le Bataclan 25th March 2010 DVD

Ok, looking through some video material this afternoon. Admittedly some of it is not so great, but this is alright, albeit a partial set. Audience shot there is a close focus on the stage and the image is steady. Also, there is probably not so much live footage of 'Retro Rockets' around which is a bonus for this one.

I was at this and I do not recall any incidents, but I believe the cover shot is from the gig and I have to say that I have seen that face before. By the look on his face coupled with the fact that he is holding a towel to his bass, I am assuming that beer has been thrown and that is not the hand of friendship that he is offering to someone unseen in the crowd!

Adam Ant Matthew Ashman Tribute Gig The Scala London 21st November 2010

On the 15th anniversary of his death, the Scala in London hosted a tribute night in memory of former Ants and Bow Wow Wow guitarist, Matthew Ashman. Featuring an array of former musical collaborators (see flyer below) the night must have been a good one!

Here's Adam's set from the night.

O2 Academy Newcastle 12th March 2010 DVD

Still sorting through piles of discs. I had a look at this one. Received in a trade at around the time of the tour (sorry I cannot recall from whom it came) this is an audience shot film of the band on the 'Decades Apart' tour. For an audience recording it is very watchable and the sound is good.

Here's another find from the 'to be sorted' disc piles. A short festival set from Japan's annual 'Punk Spring' festival in 2010. Talk from the stage minimal if non-existent language barrier I presume.

Devo Something For Everybody US TV June 2010

A bit of a diversion here, but one with links to The Stranglers and a strong cross-over appeal to many Stranglers' fans I know.

Akron's Devo defy attempts at pigeon-holing. With a longevity stretching beyond that of The Stranglers by a matter of months they sounded and perhaps just as notably looked like no other band in the United States or anywhere else. Back in 1978, when appearing on 'So It Goes' they eloquently described themselves to Tony Wilson as 'the fluid in the punk enema bag'.... now there's a description should you be in need of one! Like The Stranglers not every record that they have put their name to has been great by when they did get it right the results were brilliant."2009's 'Something For Everybody' was a real return to form album.

Here are a couple of promotional appearances that they did for US TV.

Le Bataclan 25th March 2010

Clearly, this post does not require much of an introduction. Today Le Bataclan, a venue with a long history of entertaining the Parisian population, stands scarred after the events of Friday night.

The Stranglers also have a long history with the venue with their most recent visit being this one from 5 years ago. This was a double celebration. The second Wonky Bus tour had rolled into town and the gig marked Baz Warne's birthday.

The Brighton Train It Goes Real Soon.......

Once more onto the breach, a king once said. The rat hits the road once more tomorrow in my near home town of Brighton.

Here's hoping that there will be a few pleasant surprises in the set to excite the regulars.

As a taster of the kick off tomorrow, here's the Brighton date from the 2010 tour. Again, the band played the wonderful Dome venue. For those who have not had the pleasure of seeing the band (or any band for that matter) in this historic building..... well you must. The Dome once served as the stables to the Pavilion, the exotic brainchild of The Prince Regent, George IV in waiting.

It will be a good gig!

Manic Street Preachers Simon Mayo's Drivetime BBC Radio 2 15th September 2010

I know that there is quite a considerable cross over interest in the Manics among The Stranglers fan-base, so here is a short two song radio session from a few years back recorded in the month of the release of their ' Postcards From a Young Man' album.

Hugh Cornwell Live at WFMU on Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine 26th October 2010

Clem Burke, Hugh Cornwell and Steve Lawrence
Live at WFMU on Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine, October 2010

Here's a little gem that I stumbled across this morning on the net (here).

From the site, here's the blurb:

Diane is ecstatic to welcome the legendary Hugh Cornwell to the Fun Machine. Front man for the Stranglers for years, he's currently touring with his all star band featuring drummer Clem Burke (Blondie, Romantics) and bassist Steve Fishman (James White and the Blacks). They'll be playing a few live numbers in the studio and then Diane will speak about music with the punk icon! His latest release is a double CD called "New Songs for King Kong," on the Invisible Hands Music label. On this tour, Hugh played 2 sets -- a mix of his solo work and Stranglers songs, followed by a performance of "Rattus Norvegicus IV", the Stranglers first album in its entirety.

Here's a specific request from jjr4 (thanks again!!).

A good sounding set from Hugh including the whole of Rattus. I haven't had much time to listen to this, but I had to smile when some French scamp shouted 'Where's Jean-Jacques?' How Hugh must have laughed!

JJ Burnel & Baz Warne RTE Radio Interview 22nd October 2010

As An example of some more of JJ and Baz's little acoustic sideline (referred to in the France 2007 post), here's a feature that appeared on Ireland's RTE Radio back in 2010. The short extract featuring a rather belligerent Burnel is from 'Willesee at Seven', a prime time early evening magazine show in Australia. Recorded during the band's ill-fated 1979 Australian tour, this interview was to the Stranglers what Grundy was to the Pistols.... all good sweary fun.

Mallory Park 18th September 2010

Here's a slightly shortened festival set coming off the back of the Decades Apart tour. The Stranglers teamed up with Triumph for this celebration of our bass player's favourite mode and make of transport. Full sets  from the Spring tour will be uploaded before too long, but even here it is notable that this tour saw a much needed rethink of the band's set. On this recording, Go Buddy Go, Curfew, Genetix and Down in the Sewer make a welcome return, whilst a new song in the shape of Retro Rockets appeared.
