Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

The Specials Max Schmeling Halle Berlin 3rd April 2019

Here is a great quality recording of The Specials in Berlin promoting the 'Encore' album. There was an occasion when I saw them play at The Troxy in 2014. It was a gig I came away from absolutely crestfallen. I said at the time that it was like watching a band that had had the heart ripped out of it (of course there are some who say that with Jerry Dammers absent The Specials reformed had no heart to start with ... I was not one of those). However, the Troxy gig was a low for me after the thrilling five years of gigs that preceded it. At that time, Neville had gone and so had Roddy and it was clear where the band were trying to fill in the substantial gaps left in their wake.

After lockdown or during one of the brief windows of lockdown respite, I can't remember which, The Specials returned, playing the Roundhouse in September 2021. I was apprehensive with memories of the night at the Troxy still in my head. If anything, there was the potential for things to be even worse (in the interim we had lost Brad)... but it didn't turn out that way at all. Since 2019, the band had released a second album of new material, 'Protest Songs'. Thus with two albums worth of new material, the gig was out of this world. Despite the fact that the six originals of 2009 were now down to three, the inclusion of new material propelled the band into a new era of lyrical defiance of many of the world's injustices. Sadly this new era was short lived as Terry Hall succumbed to cancer little over a year later in December 2022.

I am so glad that the Specials and I parted on such a high since, regardless of my love of The Stranglers, The Specials remain as the most important band to have emerged through the '70s and early '80s.

Thanks to the original uploader on 'Live Bootlegs'.

Alhambra Dunfermline 8th March 2019

Many thanks to Yesican for this upload to Dime some years ago. A welcome return to one of my favourite venues in the UK. Set interesting for the inclusion of 'Ice Queen' (one of my favourite tracks from 'Aural Sculpture') and Hey! Rise of the Robots. Will 'Pay Day' appear in a set again?

Punk Rock Bowling Las Vegas 27th May 2019 DVD

To kick off the weekend, here is an authored DVD of the band's appearance at the US 'Punk Rock Bowling' festival back in 2019. This isn't the full set played on the day, that can be found in audio form here.

Not sure whether if was the down to hired equipment or what, but in parts Dave's fingers are not doing what Dave's head is telling them to do. Bless him!

At the moment, the US punk/new wave festival scene appears to be thriving still, but I wonder whether under financial pressures they will go the same way as similar festivals in the UK (I am thinking Stone Valley and Sign of the Times here)?

999 Readipop Studios Reading 13th December 2019

Ok so this is the last of ten posts reflecting my top 10 gigs of 2025. Finishing up with punk stalwarts (and an all time favourite of mine, 999). Apologies, I cannot recall how this 2019 gig from Reading reached me, but a big thank you to whoever provided this one.

So then, on to 2026 and another year of gigs. First of the year tonight and would you believe it... it's 999! This is a big year for the band as 2026 is the band's 50th anniversary. It has been said many times in the past, but who ever could have even entertained the notion that the horrible genre of punk rock could have lasted half a century!

Rebellion 2nd August 2019

In August 2019, The Stranglers graced the stage of the Empress Ballroom within the iconic Winter Gardens of Blackpool. The event was Rebellion 2019, a festival of now world renoun. This is a full set recording. Thanks to Paul for the share.

As a bonus there are five tracks from the set that the band played at the Wasted Festival (a forerunner of Rebellion) in May 2005.

A Wonky 7 Memory Big Band Cafe Caen 24th November 2019

It was 2019 and another foray into Northern Europe on a Wonky Bus, number 7 no less. Three gigs in France on this occasion. The footage shows a number of the party in the customary 'tour' shirt..... in BLUE!! Well, as I recall, the official rationale for this fashion departure was that 2019 marked the 40 anniversary of the release of the very pro-European 'Euroman Cometh' album from the gallic one. Unofficially, 2019 saw the UK in a ferment of protest and counter-protest as the Government tried to push through Brexit, so the shirt featuring the Council of Europe's flag featuring the 12 gold stars, the symbol of the European Union, was for some on the trip something of a two fingered salute to the jingoism that gripped many at the time back home.

Anyway, back to the video clip above, found upon setting up a new work phone and transferring data from the old. The venue was heaving, so much so that it was nigh on impossible to get into the auditorium in what is a pretty small venue, so for want of a better plan we took over the bar/merch area and made it our own.... I think drink had been taken!

Vive Le Rock Awards 27th March 2019

As part of this disastrous renovation that we have embarked upon I have been trying to consolidate my bootleg recordings as I am a bit disorganised in that respect. In doing so I stumbled across this gem which I had forgotten that I even had. Apologies to the kind soul that sent it to me as I can't remember the source.

It's a great little recording of a short set that was culmination of for me and Gunta a highly emotionally charged night. There were the highs, a chance to see The Rich Kids for the first and probably only time, and clearly The Stranglers playing after receiving the best band of 2019 award and the lows... we lost Pete Shelley the previous December (Pauline Murray paid great tribute to him) and just a week or so previously The Beat's Ranking Roger succumbed to cancer. Regular visitors to this site will be aware that I hold 2 Tone very dear and The Beat were a very important band for me.

Ruts DC The Opera House Rebellion Festival 3rd August 2019

In these dark and dangerous times that we are living through right now, many musicians with no venues to play are being resourceful and turning the cameras on themselves. Ruts DC are no exception. They have been hosting weekly episodes of 'Ruts TV' that have thus far featured a mix of Ruts and Ruts DC archive footage along with a bit of chat about the plans for the band as well as how their solitary days are being filled.

In this weeks installment Segs rued the fact that under different circumstances the band would have been winding up their first acoustic tour (now rescheduled to take place in August...... which may or may not prove to be the case sadly). He also mentioned the occasion last year when they played another acoustic set in the rather magnificent Opera House at The Rebellion Festival, which is uploaded for you good people here. Cheers Chatts99.

Thanks also goes to the Ruts chaps for their heartfelt tribute to the man with a massive swelling organ, Mr Greenfield!

Focus The Playhouse Whitley Bay 23rd October 2019

Focus (2019)

Having spouted off in my preamble to the T. Rex/Damned post about punk's contempt for prog rock it is worth noting that in many cases for some of the musicians involved, the anti-prog stance was a sham. And The Damned were perhaps the worst offenders in this deception, especially the beret-ed one.

Not all prog was shit. One band that stood out for me as a fan of The Stranglers and The Damned was Focus. I freely admit I only know the 'hits' but this is the muppets doing prog.... it is mental and wonderful. Listen to the guitars in Hocus Pocus and you cannot fail to be impressed by the manic energy of it all...... Thijs is coming after you with his flute!

Peter and the Test Tube Babies Butlins Skegness 10th October 2019

And here's another from the 'The Great British Alternative Music Festival', this time from Skegness. Peter and the Test Tube Babies, my local punk band. I was at the front for this with my daughter..... her choice! As the band came on I was hit on the back with a full pint (..... here I am certain that it was alcohol rather than piss because it was below room temperature!). It doesn't particularly bother me, but does make me wonder who in this day and age can afford to pay club prices for beer only to launch at the stage!

Good to see a couple more tracks from 'Soberphobia' in the set..... a great album from my teenage years!

The Damned 'Night of a Thousand Vampires' The London Palladium 28th October 2019

Keeping the vampire theme alive (or should that be undead), here for your listening pleasure is last year's 'Night of a Thousand Vampires', a gothic extravaganza that took place at London's prestigious Palladium Theatre on the West End of town. It featured 'The Circus of Horrors' and 'The Damned'. Billed to be something out of the ordinary, the whole band partook of the Halloween/vampire theme. Even Dave Vanian joined in!

Highlights of the night included 'Nasty', surely one of the greatest single releases from the band (and certainly the one with the best video accompaniment, courtesy of the BBC's 'The Young Ones' series), a cover of the Bauhaus classic 'Bela Lugosi' and a rendition of the new song, the aptly titled 'Black is the Night'.

I did once read back in the day that there existed some needle between Pete Murphy and Dave Vanian on account of the latter believing that the former had purloined his persona. Vampires eh?

Cockney Rejects O2 Academy Islington 14th December 2019

I surprised myself when I put together my nerdy 2019 gig list.... this was the third time that I had seen the Rejects this year! As the flyer above suggests this 40th anniversary gig was set to be something a bit different as the band were to play the brilliantly named 'Greatest Hits Vol. 1' and 'Greatest Hits Vol. 2' back to back.

Arriving early (so that Mo could get onto the barrier which is where she has decided she needs to be at gigs!) it looked fairly quiet right up to the point when the band were due to take the stage. Fill out though it did with a large number of mostly portly gents wearing claret and blue shirts topped off with Peaky Blinders caps..... sorry lads, but I just don't get those hats!

The gig was very well presented as each album set was preceded by 5 minute or so video projected onto a screen at the back of the stage in which each member said something about the songs and the making of each album and what was happening around the band at the time that each was recorded.

The Rejects made the decision to start the gig with 'Greatest Hits Vol. 2' as this was less familiar material to them with quite a few of the tracks having never been played live before. Certainly the standard Cockney Rejects set is mainly focused on the first album. By their own admission including 14 tracks on the album was over doing it a bit (albeit most run to around 2 minutes!) but this was due to pressure applied by E.M.I. to get more product out there whilst the band were riding high.

The set opened with an explosive 'War On The Terraces', a genuinely terrifying declaration of war for a Saturday afternoon back in the day when football violence was a feature in and around grounds in each of the UK's major cities. 'Urban Guerrilla' was played for the first time with Jeff 'Stinky' Turner at pains to point out the the song was recorded in the same studio as Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.... which wasn't as good.

'The Rocker' was a foretaste of the direction that the Rejects were to take later in the 1980's. Jeff admitted that the band were partial to a bit of metal of the right type, AC/DC's Bon Scott and Angus Young, early Ozzy and Lemmy were certainly musicians in bands that your average punk could admit to liking..... world's apart from the dreadful spandex clad, hair metal merchants that some like. 'The Rocker' was inspired by Lemmy.

How well I remember seeing the Rejects on their 'Top of The Pops' appearance performing/mining to 'The Greatest Cockney Rip Off'. I recall my Dad, never a fan of modern music briefly looking up at the TV, uttering 'Good God' and rolling his eyes!. Looking back on a YouTube clip of the show it features all of the best and worst that was Top of The Pops. As Sad Cafe's latest hit faded out the camera panned in on a 'trendy' Steve Wright who affected a piss poor cockerneee accent to introduce the Rejects who left the tank-topped gaggle of teenagers forced by the production team to stand in front of the stage and look interested. They didn't looked interested.... they looked confused and scared!

'Oi Oi Oi'
Islington O2 Academy 14th December 2019

'Greatest Hits Vol. 2' drew to a close with the last notes of their cover of 'Blockbuster' and I think that all four members breathed an exhilarated sigh of relief that they had pulled the job off.

A 15 minute beer and piss break and a change into a dry gymnasium vest and the band were back on stage on more familiar territory that is 'Greatest Hits Vol. 1'. All the while I am straining my neck to make sure that Mo is still holding up.... fair play to her she is still on the barrier despite the onslaught of a now largely shirtless, sweating mass of males surging backwards and forwards in football/punk reverie! Where was I you may ask? Having had an operation on my right knee only on the Monday I figured that some distance between said knee and the front of the stage made good sense!

You've gotta love Volume 1! The Oi! that Garry Bushell championed in '79/'80 was neither musically sophisticated or ideologically sound (unless you are ICF or a Headhunter or a member of another such 'firm'). For my part I can't fight for shit and the idea of fighting in the street doesn't do it for me.... but crucial to me, as made very clear in the excellent documentary 'East End Babylon' the Rejects stood up against the elements of their audience that were British Movement and the Front! Respect! So long as you were happy to twat a willing rival in the South Bank it did not matter whether you were white, black or green. I can live with that I guess.

Throughout the evening song after song was introduced concerning the occasions when the young Geggus boys fell foul of the local constabulary.... so it was highly fitting when the two 'boys' brought their long suffering mum, Ma Geggus on to the stage. At 87 she looks marvellous given the hard time.....by their own admission I might add,  that Jeff and Mickey gave her in their youth! Regardless it is clear that family are all and the (Billy) bonds are there for all to see!

Middle of the set but the last one for me to mention is 'Bad Man', in my opinion the Rejects' finest moment (shared by Jeff I think). What a powerhouse of a song.

'Bad Man'
Islington O2 Academy 14th December 2019

This was my last gig of the year and a great one to end on. My daughter ranks them in her top 10 of bands..... well, I am old and tend to change my mind from day to day, but I will say of them as would Stinky.... they really do give 110% when they play..... they love their audience and their audience love them..... all as it should be.

Happy 40th birthday to the Cockney Rejects...... 'You Ruddy 'Ooligans' as Warden Hodges may have said.

'Dad, will you take me to see Ed Sheeran?........ only joking!'
