Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present
Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.
As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.
Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.
In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.
Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

The The Palladium Cologne 16th December 2000
Getting near to the end of this particular batch of themed posts. The The and Matt Johnson. As I recall he had some early involvement with Marc & The Mambas, but I know next to nothing about his own band. I reckon I may have to put Spotify through its paces in the coming week and gen up on some of these bands!

JJ Burnel Arts Centre Swindon (30th May 2000) And The Adelphi Preston(3rd December 2000) DVD
Following on from the earlier Royal Festival Hall gig, here are two more sets from the 'Songs and Stories' dates, one from the first leg (Swindon) and one from the second leg (Preston). Whilst the filmer(s) (unknown to me I am sorry) was well positioned for both gigs, the image quality has suffered somewhat over the years. However, the sound quality is good. Across these two complete gigs I think all of the 'lost' solo material is included;
'Talkin' 'Bout Me & You'
JJ Burnel Purcell Room Royal Festival Hall London 13th December 2000
Looking back, an incredible 25 years now, at these solo dates from Burnel in the middle of a crisis period for the band, it strikes me that this was the beginning of the recovery that culminated in the release of 'Norfolk Coast' four years later. It was a fight for the hearts and minds of a tired and disallusioned fan base. The biggest part of the battle was to win back the heart and mind of old Burnel himself!
Hats off to whoever seeded the idea into the bass players mind, I have no idea whether it was JJ's idea or whether it came from others within The Stranglers' camp. 'Now listen JJ, things have got a bit stale with the band, we need a boost, arm your self with a six-string, a bottle of red and get you arse out into the provincial towns and remind people just what it was that you did in the punk wars and beyond!' And he did, even to the extent of playing Burgess Hill library (my old home town) on a tempestuous Tuesday night, the night before this gig in fact... I think the rest of the band owed him big time for that gig!
Is it just me that thinks that its a shame that some of the solo material, including the stuff that wound up on 'Norfolk Coast' was not pursued and turned into his next solo album? OK, so these songs are perhaps not as finessed in the same way as the 'Fire & Water' or 'Un Jour Partfait' songs are (but who knows how they could have turned out with a bit of studio attention lavished upon them). I think that it is a little regrettable that the record of these songs is limited to a VHS video (a defunct entertainment medium that few can still play these days) and a handful of bootlegs.
Anyway, here he is on the second leg of the 'Alone & Acoustic, Songs & Stories' tour in the prestigious Royal Festival Hall on London's South Bank.
Many thanks to yesican for replacing by knackered copy!

JJ Burnel Swindon Arts Centre 30th May 2000
An anniversary to mark here, JJ's first run of 'Songs and Stories alone and acoustic' on this night twenty three years ago! I saw a couple of these shows, firstly at the Union Chapel (drinking beer in church pews... that felt strange!) and then at Christmas in my home town of Burgess Hill (that's on the site too).

BBC Choice Documentary
Here is a copy of the 2000 BBC Scotland documentary on the band first aired on BBC Choice. The programme features music and interviews and is hosted by friend and one time collaborator, the original 'Old Codger', the late, great George Melly.

Elastica Astoria London 29th January 2000
An anniversary gig from a great band. Their first album was wonderful, ballsy, arrogant and irreverent... just what you want from a rock 'n' roll band. Who cared that with each track you could tell what band had been on the band's turntable at the time.
Unfortunately, these incontestable darlings of Britpop stalled when it came to the release of their second album, a massive five years after the first. In the fickle world of pop things had moved on and Justine and crew were darlings no more.

JJ Burnel Martlet's Hall Burgess Hill UK 12th December 2000
In preparing this upload, I notice that it has been posted elsewhere, so please accept my apologies, but what the hell, there's some additional artwork in it if nothing else.
In the absence of any performances from the band in 2000 on my shelf, I'll give this year over to the bass player.
The venue was the Martlet's Hall, a small hall incorporated into the library building. Up until that time, I had never been to an event there. In fact the only 'gig' I recall taking place there was in 1987 (I think) when Sigue Sigue Sputnik, clearly on the way down (if ever they were that far up in the first place) played. This I missed as The Pogues were playing in Brighton on the night. The SSS gig ended in a big scrap, as such was the novelty of a name band appearing locally, a lot of gig novices turned up who, as is often the case, misinterpreted a bit of liveliness at the front as a fight waiting to happen and helped it along.
After SSS it was many years before the venue started taking bookings again, and these tended to be 60's acts such as Joe Brown & The Bruvvers and the like. So to have a 'hero' of mine playing in the local library made it worth the effort to travel down from Hertfordshire.
As I remember it was a filthy winter's evening. Driving conditions on the M25 and M23 were appauling (referenced by JJ in the set). Nevertheless, my expectations were high, this being a far more intimate setting for an 'alone and acoustic' set than the previous time I had seen him at the Union Chapel in Islington. The set that night was spot on, being a walk through JJ's entire career in music to date, with good representation of music from the solo albums 'Euroman Cometh' and 'Un Jour Parfait' and the Stranglers of course. This material was interspersed with new material that I thought was very strong. Did JJ ever take the new material from the stage into the studio? The only official release of many of these songs was from the SIS footage of the Union Chapel show. Even Hawkwind sneaked into the set.
At the end of the evening, whilst it was clear that Burgess Hill and JJ Burnel had ended their brief relationship that night never to see each other again, I left the venue content and headed for a curry with some old friends.
