Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

Rock School Barbey Bordeaux 3rd February 2009

Here's one almost upon its 17th birthday from down Bordeaux way. A nice sounding recording. Thanks to the original Dime uploader (Linkerman?). Ian deputised on the drum stool for these French dates.

Penetration The Underworld Camden London 20th September 2009

Unfortunately, live recordings of Penetration of a 1978 vintage are prety rare, so the best that I can do here is offer up this one from London back in 2009. This is a great full set recording that in fact includes most of the tracks from the 'Moving Targets' era and associated tracks of that time.

Pauline and Penetration are still going strong in 2025.

Guilfest Stoke Park Guildford 10th July 2009

I believe that Guilfest is back up and running this year. For a few years this was a brilliant festival and Day out. The Stranglers have played there no less than four times over the years if I have my jottings correct (2004, 2006, 2009 and 2024). If you take a close look at the 'Guilfest '09 ' logo it also states that the event organisation was in association with the University of Surrey... forgiven they must have been!

Here's an audience shot video of the set.

L'Olympia Paris 5th February 2009 and Manchester MEN Arena 13th December 2008 DVD

Apologies, I cannot recall where this DVD came from or who authored it. It features footage from two gigs, one certainly incomplete (Paris) and one incomplete in all probability (Manchester). As to the Manchester gig, on this night The Stranglers were support to The Pogues. The ticket I located on a New Model Army site, so it may be that if The Stranglers were first on it could have been the shortest set ever... any ideas?

Penetration The Junction Bristol 16th April 2009

Just to mix things up a bit. This is a recording of Penetration from Bristol back in 2009. The sound is pretty good but it is audience shot... although you could argue that that only adds to the atmosphere. This is a classic Penetration set in what must have been an extremely hot club!

Magazine The Academy Glasgow 16th February 2009

Another night on the brief Magazine comeback tour. On this night in 2009 they were on stage in Glasgow. I saw them in London on the tour.... I loved them, Gunta hated them. I was amused that for this night only, the leather jackets that I was used to at gigs were replaced by trench coats.... we had crossed over into post punk's manor!

I loved them for the fact that they used Dave Formula's keyboards to create massive sounds that melded punk and prog. Gunta hated the idea of Howard playing chess against himself on stage.... she had a point!

But in the unlikely event that you find yourself on this page and are unfamiliar with the music of Magazine, give 'Real Life' a spin in old money or at least a stream (in the new!). You will not be disappointed I promise you.

The Specials Brixton Academy London May 2009

...... and then it happened. Boom! Following on from their appearance on the Isle of Wight a full tour was announced. I'm sure that my experience of near panic on the day of ticket release was shared by thousands. Indeed, the entire tour sold out in minutes but I managed to get tickets for three or four dates. Come the day they actually got to play (the first London date was cancelled due to Terry Hall suffering from throat problems) I was shaking with anticipation as the house light were dropped. Brad's thunderous drum intro to 'Do The Dog' coincided with the dropping of a screen to reveal The Specials on stage. The moment was captured on what has to be the greatest cover CD freebie ever released.

Magazine The Zodiac Oxford 10th February 2009

Ten years ago tonight Magazine briefly came out of retirement to play a handful of gigs to revive their prog-punk anthems to a handful of post-punk audiences across the UK. This I think may have been the first from Oxford.

The Damned Manchester Apollo 21st November 2009

In 2009, The Damned were reunited with their mate of old, the late, great, Lemmy. Lemmy, like fellow hard rocker Phil Lynott, was one of the few metal musicians in London to embrace punk. Many of their ilk considered punk to be a bastardised form of heavy metal, played badly to boot. The union between the Damned and Lemmy was very close, with the latter filling in on bass duties in the transitional line-up, The Doomed. Motorhead and The Damned also came together briefly in the studio as Motordamn.

And so it was that The Damned took to the road with Motorhead on British dates (along with some European dates).

Gary Numan The Junction Cambridge 1st December 2009 - 'The Pleasure Principle Revisited

Numan with Paul Gardiner backdrop
December 2009

Here Gary Numan faithfully reproduces his 1979 masterpiece, 'The Pleasure Principle'. Not as dark as its predecessor, the album took electronic music to a new height. There is not a duff track on the album, with precise instrumentation that perfectly complements the soaring keyboards that dominate the songs. Ever the purist, Numan made the decision to abandon guitar on this album, a decision that he has since stated was a mistake, but in my opinion the combination of bass, drums and keyboards makes for a complete sound. There is no need, or space for guitar on 'The Pleasure Principle'.

Penetration Split Festival Ashbrook Rugby Ground Sunderland 4th October 2009

Here's a short festival set for you from a couple of years back from Penetration. I have only seen them once but I think that they pretty underrated as a band. This set includes their cover of Buzzcock's 'Nostalgia' which appeared on their 1978 debut album 'Moving Targets'. And of course there's 'Don't Dictate' which Pauline describes as Penetration's 'Don't Fear The Reaper'!
