Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

? And The Mysterians Mid-City Lanes Rock 'N' Bowl New Orleans 1st October 2004

Here's something a little left field, but no prizes for knowing why I chose to post this gig. I like many others have never heard the enigmatic '? And The Mysterians' before now (with the exception of that song). In all honesty, whilst I like some of this type of '60's garage psychedilia, I have never really gone out of my way to go beyond '96 Tears'. So this I post as a curiosity as much as anything else. Theirs is a set of covers and originals. The big hit gets played twice, three times almost, as 'Can't Get Enough of You Baby' is pretty close.

To listen to them, ? And The Mysterians could pass off as Naz Nomad & The Nightmares!!

It is clear that The Stranglers cover was very faithful to the original in the same way that 'All Day And All Of The Night' deviated very little from The Kinks' version. Herein lies the problem with cover versions, they are only meaningful if they take a song in new direction... a 'Walk On By' or an 'Eloise' for example.

Thanks to the original Dime uploader.

Istres (L'Usine) 26th November 2004

Here's one of the better recordings from the 'Norfolk Coast' European tour. With no less than seven songs from the album appearing in the set, it is apparent that the band fully understood that with this album they had turned a corner in that they had produced a piece of work not bettered in over 20 years.

999 On TV And On Film

Here's a DVD compilation that I put together some years ago that features a collection of TV and live appearances from 1978 to 2007. Quality varies, but it's a nice collection. Anyone recall where 'Bomb You' came from or is it another of those tracks like 'People Who Died' and 'White Trash', songs that saw the light of day for the briefest of times?

Leadmill Sheffield 7th March 2004

The Stranglers were back on tour in the Spring of 2004 with a new album to promote... 'Norfolk Coast'. The band were clearly pleased with their efforts on the new album as the set contains no less than eight of the eleven songs that appear on the album.

Back To The Norfolk Coast

It could be said that the regeneration of The Stranglers started in 2000. The year when JJ rediscovered his musical mojo. For whatever reason, after the departure of Hugh, the co-vocalist stepped back from the microphone. His vocal contributions diminished increasingly throughout the 1990's until to all intents and purposes he was going through the motions whilst other musicians on the stage played around him. In those years I moved away from the band, seeing them on vary rare occasions. In 1998 I was given a ticket to see them at Cambridge Corn Exchange and I found it distressing to watch. At this lowest ebb (to my ears at least) JJ had stopped engaging in the writing process I believe, effectively handed over song writing duties to Paul Roberts and John Ellis, which had a dramatic impact on how the band sounded. With the departure of John Ellis, JJ once gain stepped up to the plate so to speak.

I cannot recall, but it may have been as a result of trouble in the marital home, JJ spent some time in reflection on the stunning Norfolk Coast that resulted in the resumption of writing to the extent that he felt confident enough to go out on the road with his solo 'Songs and Stories' set. The track 'Norfolk Coast' lifted from JJ's gig at the Union Chapel in Islington in the summer of 2000 makes it on to the bonus disc that comes with the recent 'Norfolk Coast' album reissue.

Some bands have a knack, and here I mean bands with many years under their belts that have spent some years drifting in the doldrums. Something happens that reignites belief, dispels writer's block and leads to the creation of something special, in this case an album that turned heads and forced those who had previously considered the band to have a history but no future. What was that something that happened?... well it was undoubtedly Baz Warne. In a younger musician with energy and ideas, JJ found a receptive partner for new ideas. The tracks on the album sparkle with those elements that are undeniably 'Stranglers call signs'. The bass is back and for me, most critically Dave Greenfield's keyboards were rediscovered in the mix after being sidelined for some years.

As you will hear in the next post, this new energy and confidence radiated from the stage.

Shepherds Bush Empire 10th December 2004

This post is filling a request. This is one of DomP's remasters.

Not surprisingly, the set is heavy on the new 'Norfolk Coast' material with no less than seven of the album's eleven tracks showcased on the night. And why not? 'Norfolk Coast' is pretty much universally recognised amongst the fan base as the return to form album after the lacklustre offerings of 'Written In Red' and 'Coup De Grace'.

Jesse, Trina and Bambi of Eastfield

Perhaps worthy owners of the title of one of the hardest working bands in punk, there rarely seems to be a DIY punk gig flyer that does not feature the name Eastfield.... well at least that was the case when we did gigs! having said that I did notice the other day that one of their socially distanced gigs is up on Dime from last month!

I have seen them a good few times over the years, not least because my mate Chris did a stint on drums with them about the time of this recording.... if I am not mistaken he's on this one.

So here for you is a bit of Urban Rail Punk courtesy of Eastfield.

Norfolk Coast Radio Promos 2004

Widely regarded as the first and assured step out of a creative wilderness, 2004's 'Norfolk Coast' blew away the accumulated cobwebs of the previous 10 years. From the opening bars of the title track, it was clear that the band had gone back to the drawing board and returned with something very satisfactory. The elements that made that 'Stranglers sound' were resurrected, Dave's keyboard swirls, JJ's trademark bass rumble and a guitar sound that was at once reassuringly familiar and made even the most jaded old Stranglers fan's head turn.

And key to this about turn was simply that JJ regained interest in the band, and that is what was required.

As the press release at the time put it (and interestingly my comments above were written before I read the release!):

'The lead track off the album, 'Norfolk Coast' typifies all he distinctive signatures of a classic Stranglers song and sets the mood for this quintessential album, which travels through hi-speed rock, driving rhythms, anthemic melodies and occasional, off-the-wall quirkiness Trademark Stranglers qualities, including JJ Burnel's rumbling bass and Dave Greenfield's distinctive keyboard sounds, are captured on record as never before'.

Here's a selection of radio interviews conducted at the time to promote the album.

Lakenhalle Cultural Centre, Ypres, Belgium 3rd April 2004

Following on from the 'Shot At Dawn' post, it seems fitting to post this recording of the band when they played Ypres in 2004 on the European leg of the 'Norfolk Coast' tour.

On this occasion pre-gig the band made time to attend the nightly 'Last Post Ceremony' that takes place at 8 pm every evening (as has been the case since 11th November 1929). The Last Post is sounded by the buglers of the local volunteer Fire Service.

Salle De Le Cite Rennes 4th November 2004

Here's a nice sounding Mark III recording from this day 8 years ago from the European leg of the Norfolk Coast tour. At this point, the band were taking the first steps back to critical acclaim as the aforementioned album had something of the energy and spirit of old (characteristics sadly lacking in the previous two albums). Unsurprisingly, this set showcases much of the material to be found on 'Norfolk Coast'.

OK, so this is another anniversary gig, but that's not really the point of it. Actually, posting this gig is little more than a thinly veiled excuse to post this photograph which shows just how obsession can impact upon family life. I give you Paul Cooklin and family on assignment in Norfolk! So very sad!!
