Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

Colston Hall Bristol 29th September 1992

One of the few recordings that I have from the 'In The Night' tour. This one from Bristol is quite good quality and showcases the album pretty well.

Various TV Appearances 1985 - 1995

Here's another DVD compilation pulled out from the obscurity of the box of unloved/unfiled discs. A mix of Mk I and II here. Highlights are reasonable quality (i.e. transfers from contemporary VHS recordings rather than pristine digital repeats) appearances on the Kids TV programme No.73 ('Let Me Down Easy'/'Uptown') and Cheggars Plays Pop with the band appearing with 'Nice In Nice'. Nice to see Supergran giving it some in the former clip!

999 The Swan Fulham London Summer 1992

As discussed last week on the 999 Facebook page there is a recording that features a song called 'People Who Died', that by all accounts is quite an obscure track. It did appear o a bootleg tape, one of a series of tapes of punk bands in London in the late 80's (?)/early '90's. As I recall they had something to do with Dave Ferguson (who I did buy this recording (as a tape) from back then in Fulham).

As mentioned by Nick in the recording, Pablo was local and The Swan was his local, which was probably the reason that 999 played there a few times in the early '90's. Here's a flyer from 1992 that also features some outfit called The Lurkers.

5th June 1992 is probably the date of this recording.

Of course the following year the band released 'You Us It' (the successor to 'Separates' in my opinion) and there were another handful of gig's at The Swan... those were happy times for me!

The sleeve artwork also makes reference to an interview conducted upstairs at The Swan on 20th November 1993. Whilst at a gig that both The Stranglers and 999 played at Fontwell Racecourse in '93, I was asked to interview the band for an article in Strangled, the fan publication published by The Stranglers Information Service (the interview transcript can be found here).

Nicky Campbell Radio Session BBC Radio 1 10th August 1992

Thanks to Ronnie for this one. Stranglers radio sessions are few and far between and this one completely passed me by at the time.

It is included here both as a complete file as broadcast and with the session tracks singled out. Your choice. Actually, the interview is quite interesting, being broadcast at the time of the 'In The Night' release.

Club Quattro, Lagova, Japan 20th December 1992

Apparently, it's all kicking off in the little niche of cyberspace occupied by The Stranglers. Not surprisingly, and with depressing predictability, it's the aged who's better, who's best 'debate' that is behind it all.

Like any football team, there are going to be starting line ups that don't meet your approval, but then again within any single line up the performance is not always consistent!

Best to be inclusive, regardless of personal preference.... it's all Stranglers music by definition.

So, from the 'In The Night' Tour in Japan......

A Student Room - Brunel University 1992

Looking through some old photos at the weekend, I came across two that made me smile. I took a couple of pictures of my 4th year hall of residence room that I had in my time at Brunel in Uxbridge. This would have been in 1992. I was still seeing the band at this point, but less frequently as my interest was seriously on the wane.

I must have tidied up before the picture, I know it's still a mess, but I'm embarrassingly untidy!!

The Raven was painted on an old sheet. For the Bear Cage painting I may have run out of inspiration or more likely paint! Willian L. Shirer's 'Rise and Fall of the Third Reich' is on the book shelf, which remains to this day the best book that I have ever read.

More Stranglers, The Jam, the mighty Kraftwerk from the Man Machine period and a gig poster from an early gig by the reformed X-Ray Spex (1990?). From the albums on the bed, it's clear that the Madchester/baggie scene of the day passed me by completely!

These days I still have some gig posters on the wall, but now they are framed... a concession to middle age.

National Ballroom Kilburn London 11th October 1992

This is one of about a dozen of the MkII gigs that I did attend. Earlier in the year, Gunta and I had moved into a flat just off Kilburn High Road, literally a two minute walk from the National. The novelty of seeing the Stranglers so close to home overcame my misgivings about where the band were heading at that time and we went along. I do not think that I made it through to the end of this gig, bailing out at the encore!

See what you think. Any comments should be constructive, the who is better, who is best debate ran it's course many years ago! For my part, at this point the entire dynamic of the band had changed in a much more dramatic way than the shift from a 4 piece to a 5 piece outfit (remember the band had gone out on the 10 tour as a 5 piece).... something else was happening here.
