Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

Top Secret No 28 (March 1991)

In the process of rifling through various hard drives in search of a Brighton Dreamtime gig review I came across a handful more of the West Sussex produced 'Top Secret' fanzine (more specifically issues, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32). I have it on good authority that after Issue 18, changes occurred within the editorial executive team (by the way, issues 1 to 18 are already uploaded to Aural Sculptors and can be located from the index list located in the site's right hand sidebar). Assuming that issue 32 was the last that was produced, I am still missing issues 19 to 27... anyone have them stowed away but crying out to see the light of day?

Thanks again to those who took the time some years back now (Nick P and others) to scan and share the copies that I have. Top Secret filled a 'Strangled' shaped hole for many of us at a time when production timelines of the band's official oracle became somewhat erratic.

Issue 28 is here.

Subhumans The Venue New Cross London January 1991

I mentioned in the last post that I eventually got round to seeing Subhumans when they very briefly returned for two gigs at the very beginning of 1991 (2nd and 3rd January). I saw them on the first night where according to Ian Glasper's very comprehensive history of the band 'Silence Is No Reaction: Forty Years of Subhumans', The Instigators supported. That night (and on every occasion that I have seen them since) they were brilliant. This recording came from the Anarcho-punk.net site.

Buzzcocks BBC Radio 5 11th June 1991

I suprised myself today when I realised that at no time in this site's lifetime have I posted this brilliant session. Having got over the nostalgia bit of their 1989 reunion tour of the UK and the US, it was back down to the age old rock 'n' roll business of making records. The new material from the band had a tricky birth. In 1991 an album was near completed in terms of demos when the decision was made to scrap it. The album was quite hot property for some years... it is available now having seen a release a few years back. I do not know what the band's gripe was with it, it had some really good material on it, some of which saw the light of day whilst some of it was sunk, until the recent release. The three new tracks 'Alive Tonight', 'Last To Know' and 'Who Will Help Me To Forget?' played in this session featured on that aborted 1991 album, but did also see an official release at the time as a single along with the track 'Successful Street'.

According to Pete, this Radio 5 session was the first live session that the band had ever done, all of the numerous others that the band had done over their career to date having been pre-recorded.

This is one of two Buzzcocks' BBC sessions I have that were for some reason omtted from the 1998 'BBC Sessions' CD release or the excellent 'Late For The Train (Live And In Session 1989 - 2016)' box set of 2021.

For the record, the album that did see the light of day in 1993 in the form of 'Trade Test Tramsmissions' was just fantastic. For me it is the best 'comeback' album by any band!

Last one for today. An early Mk II gig here from Edinburgh, Paul Roberts's ninth gig with the band. They were given a reasonably easy time of in on this night, this wasn't always the case as the band continued to play throughout 1991, laterly in larger venues. Thanks to malcolm769 for the original upload!

Siouxsie And The Banshees Universal Amphitheater Los Angeles 21st December 1991 - UPDATED

Sometimes I forget what a great band the Banshees were. For me perhaps I am at odds with other fans of the band but I like early (late '70s material) and '90s material. I appreciate that for many the mid '80s were band's golden years. Each to their own I guess.

I only managed to see them twice in London, once in '93 and once in '95. Here is a partial radio broadcast of the Banshees in the US, playing as part of Rodney Bingenheimer's KROQ annual 'Acoustic Christmas' gathering of station favourites. This is a short recording with 'Kiss Them For Me' unfortunately incomplete, but over just eight songs is not a bad career retrospective!

Goldwyns Birmingham 28th February 1991

An early one from Mark II here, one that I found whilst trying to tidy up some external drives. My electronic housekeeping really is shocking!

It is hard to hear some of the exhanges with the audience from the stage, but I don't think the band and especially Paul were having an easy time of it. A baptism of fire given that this was only his sixth gig as a Strangler. There was certainly some stick dished out on other dates of this first post-Hugh tour.

An early Mk II gig here uploaded in two versions. The first is the version recently uploaded to Dime and the second is a much larger file which is a remastering original files prior to the Dime upload. Larger files, the remastered version has significantly more depth than the Dime version.

Many thanks to malcolm769 for the Dime version and to Mick for his remastering efforts. And thanks to Meanie for the artwork file.

Buzzcocks The Academy New York 21st July 1991 (TFTLTYTD#2)

All of those people who once said that punk was just a noise made by 'musicians' that couldn't play their instruments just weren't really listening, or were listening to some really bad bands... I remember an argument on the school bus with someone in the year above who believed that punk was just heavy metal played badly... Judas Priest anyone?

Buzzcocks did not just make a noise. Over the three albums that the band recorded during their first incarnation Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle wrote a soundtrack to the teenage condition. Shelley in particular was peerless in his ability to produce kitchen sink dramas in 3 minute episodes. What's more, he was 45 years ahead of his time in his writing. A man open about his bisexuality from the start, his songs were lyrically gender neutral by design... boy meets girl, boy meets boy, girl meets girl... you decide, it had no relevance in his songs.

The band first split up in 1981 after a gig in Hamburg (recorded for posterity in 'Auf Wiedersehen') when the members that were considered to be the 'classic line-up (Shelley, Diggle, Garvey and Maher), burned out by touring and bad rock 'n' roll habits went their separate ways. In 1989, that same line up reformed (much to my delight) for dates in the US and UK. Bolstered by a hugely positive reception, the band wrote and recorded new material in demo form. For a reason that I have never really understood, the planned 'comeback' album based on these demo recordings was binned. These demos, long in the hands of fans, only finally saw a release in the last couple of years. Some of those tracks, especially 'Dreaming' and 'Why Compromise?' were classic Buzzcocks tracks that amazingly did not make the final cut when the band did finally release an album of new material in 1993 when 'Trade Test Transmissions' was released. 'TTT' in my opinion is one of the finest 'comeback' album seeing Pete, still unlucky in love, recounting his further tales of angst and frustration. The album bears all the hallmarks of Buzzcocks, but with a nod towards the indie sound of the early nineties (again strongly influenced by another generation of Manchester guitar bands). More information on the 'Trade Test Transmissions' album can be found here.

In their second incarnation, Buzzcocks doubled their initial recorded output with the release of a further six studio albums and whilst for me, 'TTT' was the best, each of the subsequent albums contained at least some of the glittering poetic magic that was Pete Shelley's stock in trade.

Buzzcocks went on to have a second wind that lasted from 1989 to 2018 when Pete played his last gig with the band on 25th August 2018, a gig I feel privileged to have witnessed. Pete Shelley succumbed to a heart attack in Tallinn, Estonia on 6th December 2018. Steve Diggle has continued to play under the Buzzcocks banner with the band's last line-up less Pete.

Many thanks to the original Dime uploader (notsaved) of this great quality recording from New York in 1991 that brilliantly showcases the pre-split material as well as new songs from the 1991 demos.

In The Night Demos 1990-1991

Another definitive demo collection here from the Rat Zone treasury, complete with tracks that ultimately didn't make the cut onto either the UK or US release of the first post-Hugh album. Thanks again to The folks at The Rat Zone who lavished so much care and attention on this and the other recordings too!

Early days with the Mark II line up and with the low key club dates behind them the band felt confident enough for Paul Roberts to step onto the big stage for the London finale of the 'Heaven & Hell' tour. Night Town Rotterdam 22nd June 1991

Here's an anniversary gig from way back.... and as I recall it was the night that young Owen and Jacquie first played tongue tennis, which makes them new to this coupling game in my eyes.

The band seem to be having some issues with people chucking beer at them. Sod that, I have some experience of gigs in the Lowlands and I have to say that after all of the palaver of going to purchase plastic tokens en-route to the bar, the last thing that I would consider would to be launching a hard won beer at a band, no matter how shit they were!

Highlight of this gig is when Paul Roberts prior to 'Sometimes' enquires of the crowd 'Alles gut?' to which one very Dutch voice responds 'Fuck You!'.

Siouxsie And The Banshees Le Zenith Paris 28th October 1991

Here's a pretty late stage Banshees recording from the European leg of the 'Superstition' tour. From the Le Zenith venue in Paris this was broadcast on the radio, hence the annoying voice overs between tracks. Why on earth continental radio DJs consistently feel the need to gob off between songs is beyond me. Just give us the music uninterrupted for God's sake!

If you can get beyond the running commentary the sound quality is excellent.

Windsor Old Trout 1991 - Sounds Review

I knew I had this somewhere. Here's the review of Paul's first UK gig that appeared in Sounds the following week. It was written by a friend, Andy Peart, then on the paper's staff, who did ask for my opinion after the gig.... from memory I think it was me who mentioned an 'over the top' stage performance!
