Cowboy Country Mini Album for Country Craft Creation

a Country Craft Creations design team project

Hello everyone, I've a fun mini album to share with you straight from the days of my youth.  Steve Duncan has designed this fabulous collection for Cata Bella called Cowboy Country.  This mini would be perfect for any age Cowboy or Cowgirl in your family.  A great mini to house those family photos you have tucked away.  So let's get started and see what you think.

This mini sports six pages accordion pleated and directly glued to the hinges with no gussets (you'll get a great description of this process on the video).  The spine is free to move and be flexible.  I love this look and I love how the mini lies almost flat as you're thumbing through it.

I opted not to have any type of closure on it and even though it looks very open mouthed here it really isn't.  Adding a belly band closure or a knotted tie closure would be super simple if the mini were too grow to wide once the photos were added.

I did include six large top slip in tags for some fairly good sized photos.

Throughout the mini I've used a lot of magnets to keep things neat and tidy and each page has some sort of sisal rope on it.  I love that rope/twine, it has that definite country feel to it.  There are lots of pockets and slips to hold an abundance of of mats and tags.

I discovered that if I used my clear Wink of Stella glitter pen on different wordings (like the Yee Haw above) and then once dry went over it with Glossy Accents I had just a hint of sparkle show through and a nice raised effect from the Glossy Accents.  Perfect for a cowboy mini with not too much glitz and glam.

As I said above this mini has six two-page spreads which gives lots of area to showcase this great collection of Western themed papers.

I hope you'll join me on the video for a complete walk through of the mini.

Country Kitchen Mini Album

a Country Craft Creations design team project

Carta Bella collection, Country Kitchen, has lent itself wonderfully to my new mini.  Tammy Merrill from Country Craft Creations supplied me with the majority of the goodies to make this album.  I hope you'll take away some inspiration for one of your next minis.

This is an 8" square mini constructed with medium weight chipboard and covered with black Artisan cardstock along with decorative papers and elements from the Carta Bella Country Kitchen collection.

I included two extra sides to this mini so that the pages are completely enclosed when snapped shut (magnets hold the front securely as well as holding different pages and elements shut within the book)  You can easily do this to any mini you're making by adding an additional spine on the right hand side and a skinnier front piece to magnetize all together.  My front strip measures 8"x1 1/4"

This mini includes six hinges with 1/2" gussets between each.  Three sections are made using cut out oval frames from my Cricut and decorative edge elements on the flip page.

This is the backside.  Once the photos are in place all the edges around the frames can be securely glued to keep the photos snugly in place.  You can see the decorative edge cut on the Farm to Table page, this was also made using my Cricut.

The frame sections are tri-folds, as shown above, this allows for lots of room for photos or if you're showcasing the great cooks of your family, recipes.

The additional three sections either have pockets, belly bands, flip outs, or tuck ins.  It's a great amount of real estate for those family cookbook favorite photos.  The paper is so darling I think the animals, pigs, cows and chickens just make you smile.

Side pockets lend themselves to tuck in books this one will hold two 5" square photos on the inside.  The little bags are perfect journaling spots for memories you want to pass on for years to come.

Clustering 3-5 elements cut from the collection provides fun pockets for mats and photos.  I always like to remind crafters when you create pockets this way to secure the back side with some wide tape, this provides a nice smooth surface from sliding things in and out of the pocket.  No snaggy edges to catch on.

When using a belly band I always like to include some sort of stopper at the bottom to prevent photos and mats from sliding all over the place.  Here I've used the cute little farmhouse.

There's lot of fun stuff inside these pages so I hope you'll join me on the video for a complete walk through with lots more photos.  Have a great crafty day my friends!

Rustic Elegance Leftovers Become Cards

A Country Craft Creations Design Team Project

I'm a card maker through and through and I've found that if I keep the mess on my crafty table after I complete a project I'm much more apt to use those scraps up into something production, like a dozen cards.  It's so wonderful not to put a bag of leftovers away and the double bonus is being able to go to my card bin and have more cards to choose from.  Today I'm using the leftovers from Carta Bella's Rustic Elegance collection which primarily had been used to create my Rustic Country Wedding Mini.

When I do cards like this I'm using up various sizes of paper scraps, stickers, cut aparts etc.  Little snippets of seam binding and twine.  It doesn't take much to make an A2 card (4 1/4" x 5 1/2").  I even managed to keep a few flat so it doesn't cost the bank to post them in the old fashioned mail.

I used one of  wooden cuts I'd won from Creative Embellishments a while back.  This squiggly heart was perfect one I added a coat of Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam in Rustic.  The LOVE is an unbranded die repeatedly cut, once with the top decorative paper and several times with the card base paper.  I offset the colored paper to make it appear as a shadow.

This was one of my favorite outcomes.  I rotated the card base so it's portrait and opens from the top. I've simply taken 5 scraps of paper, a piece of sisal twine, a scrap of burlap along with a sentiment and charm.  Comes together pretty good wouldn't you say?

There are twelve cards in today's set.  I'm not going to share them all on the blog but the video (link at the bottom of the post) will have a complete walk though of all the cards plus lots more still photos. Here I've used a Kraft card base sprayed with Glimmer Mists over a chicken wire stencil. Leftover bits and bobs from the paper collection pull it all together into a great Birthday card.

I did want to mention one more trick I often use when gluing multiple layers onto a card I'm wanting to keep fairly flat. Once all the layers are down I open my card flat and run it through the two plates of my Big Shot.  I'm not embossing anything rather using the plates to firmly press the layers together and keep it from buckling from the glue.  Give it a try it works great.

I hope you'll join me on the video and let me know what you think of my leftovers.

a Rustic Country Wedding Mini Album

a Country Crafts Creations Design Team Project

My favorite way to create is to create for a special someone.  It used to be all I did when I first started making mini's.  I'd have a person or couple in mind with a special occasion and create something unique just for them.  As I began to design more for teams and stores the projects came faster the supplies more abundant and the projects took on not so much a personal note anymore.  I must say though I feel as if each creation is a labor of love whether it has a home in mind before I start or whether it finds one down the road. Creating takes on a life of it's own as the papers and chipborad begin to morph into something unique, something special, a one of a kind piece of art.  I hope you'll enjoy today's creation since I so enjoyed making it for this special couple.  I was fortunate to be able to attend the wedding and had a few photos we'd snapped plus a very few the bride gave me.  So even though the mini isn't completely filled there will be some photo spots to give you ideas.  It's always great to see what pages look like after the photos are placed instead of imagining it in your mind's eye.

This time  I used a larger format, the outside of the mini is an 8" square with over a 4" spine.  There are six pages with 1/2" gussets allowing it to lay almost flat as you can see above.I wanted to allow lots of space for the bride to be able to place large photos so there are abundant spots for 4x6' photos plus pull out tags and tuck in areas for 5x7" or larger.  It always amazes me at the quantity of photos you can get into an album this size.

I have to tell you about the front cover before I move forward.  I had purchased these unfinished wooden frames with the chicken wire in the middle.  I painted the square one with Tattered Angels DIY paint in Sable and then used the Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam in Rustic to added a little sparkle and the hints of rustic orange to it.  I love how it turned out.  I popped it up on foam tape and left the top open.  I had this photo we'd snapped of the Bride, her Dad and Step-Dad as they walked her down the aisle.  She can use it or easily pull it from the top tap and replace it with one of her own.  At the moment I'm going to let Grandma decide if she'd like more adornments on the front.  I kind of like the simple look but I had taken the twine and braided it and laid it around the three sides of the wooden frame, I like that look as well, we'll see if Grandma does too since she the one getting it for the Granddaughter as a gift.

By making the spine so large and allowing 1/2" gussets between the pages you can see there is lots of room inside to add a wheel barrel of photos and memorabilia.

Having six pages gave me 14 sides, including the inside front and back, to decorate.  I won't show them all here but the video is a complete walk through front to back sharing all the flip, flaps and extras plus lots more still photos.  Here I cut a double frame with the Cricut and popped the brides boot and the hubby's head to the outside of the frame.  I love doing this it just gives the photo so much more life like they are inside the frame and out at the same time.  You'll see lots of little stick ons throughout the pages like the banner and heart here.  These were Jolie's Stickers my friend Cheryl Wells gifted me.  I was so happy with I saw the cowboy boots and hats, perfect perfect perfect for this barn wedding were everyone wore boots including, as you can see, the bride!

The tables for the reception were decorated with canning jars filled with flowers, now how perfect to find a paper collection like Carta Bella's Rustic Elegance that had canning jars in it.  Thank you Tammy Merrill from Country Craft Creations for suggesting this paper line. I hadn't seen it prior to this and it was the best fit ever.  It even had the wood grained paper for the front and spine.  Amazing how things, as I said, simply begin to fall into place as the mini takes on a life of it's own.  I cut this jar from a one of the mats, left a white border and added Glossy Accents to the jar.  I took jute twine to make the string and added some flowers  to give the 3-D pop.

Let's talk about embellishments for a moment.  The little flowers that are shown throughout the book were white 49 Market Pina Colada.  They come 49 flowers of varying sizes to the package and they are all white.  My preference always is to get white when possible, flowers- ribbon - bling anything at all because with white you can alter it to fit your color scheme perfectly.  I misted the white flowers with Tattered Angels mists of Candy Corn, Valencia and Red Rose.  Perfect match for the colors in the book.  If the flowers are too big, pull a few petals off or add others that you've made or have from other assortments.  The sky is the limit when altering and adding to a mini.  That's the fun part!

One of my favorite additions to mini albums are waterfalls, they provide lots of space for a multitude of photos. When filled this will house 12 4x6" photos and room for an extra if she chooses to put one over the decorative paper on the front.  Because this theme is rustic I went hunting to see what I had in my stash for ribbon and found this wired canvas which just fit so well.  Again here's the largest of those flowers I was talking about along with a spray of the Sisal Rope.  I really liked using this rope throughout because it has the wispy threads that make you think of straw or hay, just pulling the theme together more.  I tucked the ribbon under the edges of the page gluing them securely.  I also added a wide strip of packing scotch tape over the edges so when the side mats slides in and out it won't get hung up on the edges of the ribbon.  The closure is simple a velcro strip along the edge glued in place with Beacon's 3-in-1.

I think I'll finish today's post with a view of the back inside cover.  Here I created a cluster pocket with lots of stickers from the Jolie's packages Cheryl sent.  The cowboy boots and hat along with the love banner end the mini so well.  When creating a cluster like this I start with a piece of cardstock, in this case I used the Cream Artisan cardstock from Tammy's store.  Then I start building up with the burlaps and stickers tucking in wisps of the sisal rope here and there.  Gluing only the three sides allows for a roomy pocket to house lots of photos.

I hope you'll join me on todays video.  It's a little long, you know me when I'm excited about something and start sharing I always like to add the why's and how's of the creation.  Check out the links to the Country Craft Creations store along with their Social Media sites.  I'll also post links to my own Social Media as well.

Paper Piecing Ai Stamps

a Country Crafts Creations Design Team Project

If you have yet introduced yourself to Ai (Art Impressions) stamps there is just no time like the present to do so.  Tamra Merrill, from Country Craft Creations sent me two of the Vintage stamp sets to play with.  I'd mentioned I like to paper piece and decided I'd like to share that technique with you. It's a little time consuming because you are stamping and fussy cutting several times for each stamp but the end result, well it's kind of addicting, like you'd like to do another, just wait you'll see.

I'm just going to do a short run through of what I've used and how I used it here on the blog.  You'll really want to watch the video (link below) to get the full benefit.  On video we'll paper piece one stamp together and I'll share all the techniques I've come up with through trial and error.  As we all know it's nice to not have to make the mistakes that others have made and just reap the rewards of the easiest way to do something, well in this case the easiest way for me.  I'll post a link to the supplies I used plus store links directly below the video link at the bottom of this post.

The first step is to stamp your image on white cardstock (I'm using 110# white from Georgia Pacific). This stamped image will become your building base to glue your fussy cut pieces too. I like to have a good set of small scissors, I use Cutter Bees and a set of reverse tweezers.  The tweezers are like a third hand when you're trying to glue the small pieces into their respective spots.  I also use a cut piece of an old Cricut mat to stick my pieces onto while I'm assembling my images.  This mat didn't have a lot of sticky left on it but it's enough to keep the tiny bits from flying elsewhere while you are working.

The first step is to figure out what areas won't be recut, in this case it was her legs, shoes, hair, face, the one arm.  I then color these first and start layering.  You can see above the first layer, her dress has already been glued down.

Here's a look at the finished paper pieced stamp.  The key is to look at your image and decide how many layers you're going to have. Starting with the layer that would be the furthermost away from you begin gluing.  In this stamp there are 4 primary layers, her dress, the apron, the bowl and the arm holding the bowl.  When I was done I fussy cut the whole image, glued it to a solid green and fussy cut again.  I am thinking these will be used in a mini I'm making.

Here's the second stamp I paper pieced.  There are three ladies here so I pretend each is a stand alone and fussy cut and paper piece each image separately and then re-glue them in the order they would be standing so some parts of them over lap the others.  It will make a lot more sense as you watch the video.  This is an extremely fun process and one that will give your cards, minis, or whatever project you used the pieced images in a great added dimension.  I hope you'll give it a try.

Metropolitan Girl Scraps to Cards

I'm back with another 'using your scraps' post and video.  I know in my heart of hearts once I stick that package of scraps away, no matter how good my intentions, it usually stays tucked away.  New stuff arrives, new projects take over my crafty space and all those fun bits and pieces of leftovers often stay just that way, as leftovers.  So before I cleaned up my crafty mess from making the Metropolitan Girl mini  I decided to turn all those scraps into cards.  You know once I begin it's like my own personal challenge just how many cards can I make.  Well today's grand number hit 15!!  Not too shabby for just the leftovers huh?

When I start on a marathon card session like this I like to have my card bases cut, this time they are all A2 sized cards 4 1/4" x 5 1/2".  I also gathered some solid color Artisan Paper, the 6x6 paper pad of the Metropolitan Girl and all the scraps from the collection, Distress Inks, Glimmer Mists, Stamps, Embossing Powders, you name it what ever I thought I might need I assembled within a hands reach. By having everything close I know I'll keep on keepin' on until the last scrap is done or I finally say ENOUGH!

Several of the cards have tuck in spots that I can insert money or a gift card, whatever the occasion might call for.  Most of the card bases use Artisan Paper from The Country Craft Creations store (links below).  I did pull out some odd colors like the yellow and peach for a few cards.  Anything in the stash is fair game when you're making projects like this.

Since this paper is super retro it gave me a chance to use a couple of stamps sets that have just been tucked away screaming at me to take them out and play with them.  A Wendi Vechi stamp set called Gossiping About Art and a Dyan Reaverley Dylusions set called Say It How It Is.  If you like your sentiments to have a little spunk then these two sets would be perfect to add to your stamp collection. I've had mine a while so I'm not sure about their availability.

Check  out today's video, it will show you not only the outsides but the insides as well, I like to finish most insides with a little something.  These aren't super involved cards, they are more playful, fun ones that basically use up all the leftover scraps.  So dig in your crafty cupboards and pull out a bag of scraps (I know you have some) and make yourself a set of fun scrapped cards today.

Metropolitan Girl Horizontal Mini Album

Metropolitan Girl by Carta Bella is a fun, zippy paper collection featuring some really snappy ladies and thoughts.  Today I'm sharing a 6" x 8" horizontal mini album for the Country Craft Creations Design Team.  There will be a walk though video at the bottom of this post and all supplies will be linked there as well.  Be sure and stop by Country Craft Creations to see all the fabulous paper lines available. Don't forget to join Scrapbookers of Country Craft Creations Facebook Group, where you will be amazed at the abundance of fantastic free tutorials, crafters sharing their expertise and a never ending opportunity to learn something new.  What more could a crafty person ask for?

This mini just lent itself to being horizontal, you'll see why in just a moment.  I wrapped the basic structure in black cardstock and then used the designer paper skyline for the front and back. Black tulle hides under the front, over the spine and under the back cover joining together at the bottom to form a bow closure. Front, back and spine were adorned with fussy cut images and chipboard pieces altering the heights to give dimension.

I cheated on the spine and added a piece of Authentique Spectrum cardstock.  These stripes just sealed the deal.  I used Wink of Stella over all of the spine, in real life it takes on a sparkle that spot on for a Metropolitan Girl.  The chipboard here is actually the top packaging of the chipboard pieces, when I craft nothing is off limits.  I did have to eliminate the designers name with the addition of the Taxi sign.  So stinkin' cute especially with the high heels balancing on top.

This is the bottom portion of the skyscape that was used for the front cover, fitting it should finish out the back as well.  I took one of the chipboard pieces 'Be Your Own Kind of Beautiful', covered it in clear Wink of Stella and then covered that with Crystal 3D Lacquer. When all was dry I tucked some black tulle behind and add ribbons of black seam binding.

The book consists of 4 pages which layer in graduations one atop the other.  To get the book to lie flat like this I used 1/2" gussets between each page.  I also used a combination of red, blue and cream for the page construction using the Country Craft Creations Artisan Paper Sampler pack.  I LOVE this paper!!!  you can score and fold and not have any cracking, a big plus in my book.

Each page has swing outs created from the border strips of shop fronts. I snipped each strip into two pieces and backed them leaving a small solid border around.  I also only glued the backing to the bottom and sides to create extra pockets for photos and tuck ins. These stay closed with hidden magnets.

When flipped out you have places to write journaling or place your photos.

This is the back of the first page.  I created a cluster pocket using 5 different elements.  You can easily slip a 5 1/4" x 4 3/4" tag behind.  I did use a lot of Crystal 3D Lacquer and clear Wink of Stella on my elements. Backing them with the navy blue solid helps them pop and adding dimension to some elements gives them a much better visual look.

Here's page two, again backed, this time with navy blue and open for photos, tags, or whatever extras you'd want to stick inside the extra pockets. The small photo shows how the flips look when opened.  This time I added some stickers and chipboard on the inside to hold the photo mat in place.

The back side of page two has a pocket to hold larger photos or the little tuck in I have here.  I dyed the ribbon strip with Tattered Angels Simply Sheer Matte in Red Rose, it was originally white with black dots.  Since my papers were a cream base the white just jumped out of you.  When you purchase elements, ribbons, flowers etc in white or cream you then always have the option to change the color to match your color scheme with mists or dyes.

Page three is my Uptown page. Such fun papers to play with they have that retro vibe to them.  On the inside strips of this one I used a strip from the sticker sheet across the bottom flaps, added the striped paper across the middle top which I only glued on the 3 sides and punched with an EK Success Deco Scallop, I was going for an awning look here.  You have so many options to choose from the stickers, chipboard and ephemera pieces.

This is one of my favorite pages, probably it's that striking red and blue combo.  I love the chipboard sentiment she's standing on.  The blue strip creates a belly band to slide the folded red mat under. Since I'd already used the chipboard piece of this gal I made her again by fussy cutting her from the paper and backing with the solid red.

The last page finishes off the strips of shoppes.  The base page is cream again this time.  I really like alternating the base page color.

I wanted to show you the inside mat on this page.  I took one of the sentiments and cut it from the frame (it's tucked inside one of the pockets on the above pages).  I used the frame here and left the top and side open.  I slid a small mat under the sides and this will eventually be the home to the photo.  If I could have found my acetate sheets, I've packed them in such a good place I can't find them now, I would have backed the frame with acetate, I think that gives a much more finished look.  Once the photo is attached it won't matter.

Here's the flip outs on the last page, this time I matted the shoppes with the red, you can't go wrong with that.  A couple of stickers and the flaps are done. I had to share the perfume bottle on the right.
One thing I preach over and over is to always allow ample drying time when you are using a large amount of Crystal 3D Laquer or Glossy Accents.  Well what did I do but set something right into the goo before it had dried.  There was no way to smooth it out and it would have been a total loss, sniff sniff.  So I decided to see what would happen if I took my heat gun to it.  The result was this crinkly perfume bottle! Perfect so another goober salvaged!

Here's the back of the last page.  Under the fussy cut lady are several magnets so she snaps shut and holds whatever you decided to put underneath snugly.

When I glued my pages to the hinges I left the right sides open so I'd have room for a pocket to slide my mats in.  I used an EK Success Border Edge punch called Flower Burst for the pull.  Because there will be a lot of strain on the pulls coming in and out of the pockets I punched and cut another flower burst and glued it directly over top of the first one.  With double strength the pulls should hold up well.

Finally we are to the inside back covered adorned delightfully with this chipboard dress.  I added a black seam binding sash to the waist to go with the black bows on the top sticker.  So there you have it my horizontal flip mini.  I hope you like it and perhaps will give it a go yourself.  This is a fun retro paper collection to work with.  Happy Crafting everyone, enjoy the process and have fun.
