A interação com as religiões era uma das tarefas mais exigentes para os líderes imperiais. As religiões poderiam ser a cola que mantinha um império unido, reforçando a legitimidade dos governantes individuais e da empresa imperial como um todo. No entanto, também poderiam desafiar esta legitimidade e pôr em risco a coesão de um império. 

Como os impérios, por definição, governavam populações heterogéneas, tiveram de interagir com uma variedade de cultos, credos e estabelecimentos religiosos. Essas interações passaram da acomodação e tolerância para a cooptação, controle ou supressão; desde o alinhamento com uma única religião até à celebração da diversidade religiosa ou mesmo à invenção de uma nova religião cívica transcendente; e do patrocínio pródigo à indiferença.

Os colaboradores do volume investigam essas dinâmicas nos principais impérios da Eurásia - desde aqueles que funcionavam num cenário religioso relativamente tolerante (a Índia de Ashoka, China Antiga, impérios helenísticos e romano) até aqueles que se aliaram a um único credo proselitista ou não (Irão Sassânida, os impérios cristão e islâmico), àqueles que tentaram acomodar diferentes credos através de políticas de "pagar para rezar" (Tang China, os mongóis), explorando as vantagens e desvantagens de cada uma destas escolhas.

A obra une uma ampla variedade de perspetivas interdisciplinares, e analisa um espectro de lógicas e ações sacrificiais, desafiando-nos a repensar o nosso conhecimento sobre o sacrifício, considerando os valores e motivações muitas vezes ocultos, subliminares e até paradoxais que fundamentam os atos sacrificiais. 

Os capítulos dão a atenção necessariamente a questões fundamentais nos estudos do sacrifício e da violência ritualizada – tais c forma como podemos empregar novas abordagens às evidências existentes ou rever teorias há muito debatidas sobre o que exatamente é ou poderia ser o “sacrifício humano”, ou por que o sacrifício humano parece emergir com tanta frequência e facilidade na experiência social humana ao longo de tempo, culturas e contextos históricos muito diferentes. 

Assim, o volume irá tocar os estudiosos da sociologia, antropologia, arqueologia, história, estudos religiosos, ciência política e economia –onde quer que o interesse esteja focado em repensar criticamente as questões da violência humana sagrada e santificada, e os valores que a tornam o que é.

Arqueolinguistica das linguas Trans-eurasiticas

Deixamos aqui esta conferência proferida no ano 2021 dentro da escola de verão do Instituto Marx Planck para a Ciência da História Humana, pela Dr. Martine Robbeets com o titulo "Archaeolinguistia - o caso Trans-eurasiatico". Em ele se resume as achegas publicadas em um artigo publicado esse mesmo ano na revista Nature no que se propus um modelo explicativo para a expansão das línguas trans-euroasiáticas, isto é isto é, japonês, coreano, tungúsico, mongólico e turco. 

Desafiando a tradicional "hipótese pastoril", o artigo demonstrava que a ancestralidade comum e a dispersão primária das línguas da Transeuriaticas remontam aos primeiros agricultores do pelo nordeste da Ásia a partir do Neolítico Inferior sustentado no cultivo do milho-miúdo. Mas que essa herança compartilhada foi mascarado por extensa interação cultural desde a Idade do Bronze. 

A palestra e o centra-se sobre tudo nas conexões nos casos coreano e japonês e a sua relação com o Urheimat da zona costeira do delta baixo Rio Amarelo, deixando um pouco de lado a posterior conversão de tunguses, turcos e mongóis a populações a pastores nómadas ou caçadores-coletores; se bem é tentador relacionar isto como uma reação centrípeta a introdução do cultivo do arroz e a conseguinte adoção de estruturas tipo Estado, como a sugerida para zonas do Sudeste Asiático pelo antropólogo James C. Scott.
