O Mar como Passagem na Mitologia Grega

The Sea as a two-way passage

Beaulieu, M-C.A. (2008): The sea as a two-way passage between life and death in Greek mythology. Tese doutoral, Texas University at Austin. 

   

Sinopse   

O mar tem dois papéis principais na mitologia grega. Está associado à viagem ao Hades e, como água primordial, Oceanus, representa vitalidade e até vida eterna. Até agora, os estudiosos consideraram estes dois aspetos como fundamentalmente antinômicos. 

Proponho tratá-los como complementares para mostrar que o mar é um locus intermediário entre a terra e o Submundo que permite passagens iniciáticas para a idade adulta, heroização e divinização pela morte simbólica e retorno à vida. Para as mulheres, a imersão, assim como o banho nupcial, é uma transformação unilateral e irrevogável de parthenos em gynê que as separa para sempre de suas famílias. 

Em mitos como os de Danae e Auge, as meninas encontram um marido e uma nova comunidade em terras estrangeiras, bem como uma nova identidade como rainhas após terem sido expostas no mar pelas suas famílias. O baú onde estão encerradas com os filhos ilegítimos transmite o duplo sentido do mito: salva a vida das heroínas, mas também serviu de esquife na Antiguidade. Por outro lado, raparigas como Britomartis saltam ao mar para fugir dos seus amantes. 

A sua imersão é uma fuga ao poder de Eros, uma anti-iniciação na idade adulta. Esta negação de Eros também está presente no salto de Safo sobre Leucas. A poetisa escapa de Eros e entra no Hades saltando do penhasco e retorna à terra livre de paixões. 

Para os adolescentes, a imersão no mar é uma passagem de mão dupla, realizada sem compulsão. A passagem de Taras e Teseu no mar resulta no seu reconhecimento como filhos de deuses. Eles regressam às suas comunidades como líderes totalmente integrados.

Este volume visa oferecer uma nova perspectiva sobre uma variedade de abordagens teóricas e comparativas para explorar representações de alteridade, monstruosidade e desvio. Envolvendo-se com a interação de gênero, personagem, texto e cultura e explorando questões de alteridade comportamental, sociocultural e textual, essas contribuições examinam assuntos que vão desde o estudo de narrativas de saga fragmentadas e 'Outras' até atitudes em relação a pessoas estrangeiras e terras, e alteridades em textos mitológicos e lendários.

Para as comunidades do passado, como agora, a água representa um limite material ou simbólico em divesos aspectos de sua vida e meio ambiente. É um limite territoriais sao concebido de distintas formas e os povo utilizam frequentemente elementos significativa da paisagem, em particular os cursos de água, para demarcar os limites da sua influência administrativa e política.

Além da fronteira topográfica, o acesso aos recursos aquáticos, o abastecimento dea água comumente refletem uma separação social que evidencia relações de controle/domínio/regulação e poder.

Finalmente, existe também a dimensão espiritual, mágico-religiosa, até mesmo sagrada ligada à água, que pode marcar a fronteira entre o profano e o sagrado, e garantir uma porta de entrada assim como um limite, entre o mundo dos homens e o mundo divino.

Partindo destas premissas o ultimo numero da revista Frontieres oferece um quadro de dentro qual questionar-se podem tematicas como o caracter delimitador, divisor ou mesmo restritivo das aguas como elemento entre os povos da Antiguidade
