Sinopse   

Os autores analisam exaustivamente todas as informações disponíveis sobre as práticas rituais da religião eslava pré-cristã que podem ser encontradas em textos medievais escritos. Depois de investigar todo tipo de referência a tais práticas, oferecem uma reconstrução da religião eslava pré-cristã com base nestes testemunhos medievais. 

Ao fazê-lo, superaram os desafios apresentados pelo facto de todas estas fontes serem indirectas, uma vez que os eslavos não adquiriram a alfabetização até se tornarem cristãos. Assim, os autores destes textos professavam principalmente uma religião monoteísta, sendo cristãos e, em alguns casos, muçulmanos. A imagem que oferecem é tendenciosa e determinada pela sua própria fé. 

A presente análise combina de forma inovadora testemunhos de todas as áreas eslavas (oriental, ocidental e meridional), mostrando as suas correspondências mútuas e enfatizando a relação entre a religião eslava pré-cristã e as suas raízes indo-europeias.

A obra une uma ampla variedade de perspetivas interdisciplinares, e analisa um espectro de lógicas e ações sacrificiais, desafiando-nos a repensar o nosso conhecimento sobre o sacrifício, considerando os valores e motivações muitas vezes ocultos, subliminares e até paradoxais que fundamentam os atos sacrificiais. 

Os capítulos dão a atenção necessariamente a questões fundamentais nos estudos do sacrifício e da violência ritualizada – tais c forma como podemos empregar novas abordagens às evidências existentes ou rever teorias há muito debatidas sobre o que exatamente é ou poderia ser o “sacrifício humano”, ou por que o sacrifício humano parece emergir com tanta frequência e facilidade na experiência social humana ao longo de tempo, culturas e contextos históricos muito diferentes. 

Assim, o volume irá tocar os estudiosos da sociologia, antropologia, arqueologia, história, estudos religiosos, ciência política e economia –onde quer que o interesse esteja focado em repensar criticamente as questões da violência humana sagrada e santificada, e os valores que a tornam o que é.

Desde tempos imemoriais, os animais desempenham papéis cruciais na vida das pessoas. No continente e no norte da Europa, especialmente no período de migração e no início da Idade Média, os animais eram temidos e reverenciados. 

Percepções variadas e muitas vezes ambivalentes da fauna foram expressas através de práticas cotidianas, crenças religiosas e a ornamentação zoomórfica de uma ampla infinidade de objetos que iam desde joias, armas e equipamentos equestres até carroças e navios. Este volume oportuno investiga criticamente a multivalência dos animais na arqueologia, literatura e arte medievais, a fim de apresentar as atitudes humanas em relação a criaturas como ursos, cavalos, cães e pássaros de uma forma nova e interdisciplinar. 

Os capítulos aqui reunidos exploram a proeminência dos animais, das partes de animais e das suas diversas representações visuais nos espaços domésticos e na arena pública mais ampla, no campo de batalha e numa série de práticas rituais, mas também examinam a importância da arte zoomórfica para as culturas emergentes. elites num momento de tensões sociais e políticas em toda a Escandinávia e nas frequentemente negligenciadas sociedades eslavas ocidentais e bálticas.
