Sinopse   

Ferro e a Idade do Ferro apresenta um relato abrangente da adoção da siderurgia na Europa e na Ásia Ocidental. O estudo baseia-se principalmente em evidências arqueológicas, mas a introdução precoce do ferro no Oriente Próximo também leva em conta as fontes escritas. 

Após a inovação fundamental da produção de ferro pela fundição de minérios de ferro, o uso do ferro se espalhou a um ritmo cada vez maior entre os séculos XII e IX A.C. –eventualmente alcançando uma vasta área entre a costa atlântica, a oeste, e a Planície do Norte da China, a leste.

O livro concentra-se principalmente na adoção do ferro no Oriente Próximo e no sul da Europa, mas também inclui discussões sobre os primórdios da siderurgia na Europa Central, na estepe do Pôntico Norte e nas regiões ao norte e ao sul do Cáucaso. A mudança na conceituação do bronze e do ferro é outro tema que recebe atenção detalhada.

Na parte final do livro, o estudo se volta para o conceito de "Idade do Ferro" e as disjunções e transformações culturais e históricas fundamentais que podem ser observadas em muitas regiões na época da introdução do ferro.

Sinopse  

A leste, para além das cristas nebulosas e arborizadas dos Cárpatos Orientais, encontra-se uma terra dominada por colinas e montes, cobertos em períodos anteriores por extensas florestas e zonas de planície. 

De noroeste para sudeste correm vários grandes rios, conhecidos desde tempos remotos: Siret, Prut, Dniester, com os seus numerosos afluentes. Correspondendo aproximadamente à província histórica da Moldávia, esta terra encontra-se literalmente na orla ocidental da grande Estepe Euro-Asiática…

Entre os séculos V e III a.C., no início da Idade do Ferro Tardia, um número impressionante de castros foi construído neste território, testemunhando esforços construtivos em grande escala e sem precedentes. Segundo algumas estimativas, são conhecidos cerca de 130 destes fortes entre os Cárpatos e o Dniester. Algumas delas são modestas, quase invisíveis e quase esquecidas, mas outras ainda hoje continuam a erguer-se majestosamente na paisagem, com as suas enormes muralhas e fossos a impressionar o observador. 

Como seria de esperar, estes monumentos não deixaram indiferentes os arqueólogos, que ao longo dos tempos tentaram desvendar a sua história, com vários graus de sucesso. Hoje em dia, se a situação dos objetivos situados entre o Prut e o Dniester é mais bem conhecida, dada a atividade da escola arqueológica de Chisinau (República da Moldávia), os monumentos situados a oeste do Prut, em território romeno, permaneceram um pouco menos conhecidos, devido a várias razões objetivas e subjetivas.
