Spooky Bone

Saturday Leftover Day.

I have to confess that I have always been less of a fan of Smokey Stover than of it's companion strip Spooky. The often silent and always wonderfully slapsticky gags of Bill Hollman's black cat never fail to tickle my funnybone. So when I saw that I had a couple of stray episodes lying around, I had to share them.

The Jokes On Me Again

Monday Cartoon Day.

I accidentally erased todays post, so I have to do it again. These are cartoons by Bill Holman, from early issues of 1000 (New) Jokes. I am currently selling my 100 Jokes collection on Ebay (follow the link on the right). Some of the earliest ones have already sold, but I am adding the unsold ones and new later ones this week.

Where's The Fire?

Tuesday Comic Strip Day.

I never was a big fan of Smokey Stover. I guess having a recommandation from Harvey Kurtzman for being the funniest strip ever is hard to live up to. It wasn't until I learned about Bill Holman's 'other' strip (ctually a topper strip to Smokey), the mostly silent cat strip Spooky, that I learned to appreciate this screwball master. Now I can enjoy Smokey too, but Spooky remains my favorite. Here are some early samples of both.
