by Jo-Ann Greene
On their debut album Canis Lupus, Darryl Way's Wolf included both instrumentals and vocal numbers, with bassist Dek Messecar taking on the latter duties. The album garnered critical acclaim, and in its wake the quartet embarked on a successful British tour. On-stage, however, Messecar found it difficult to combine vocals with his intricate bass playing, thus the band's sophomore set, Saturation Point, was comprised almost exclusively of instrumentals. It was a grand album, but also failed to chart, and Way became convinced that the lack of frontman was holding them back from success. Former If vocalist John Hodkinson was recruited to amend this flaw, and the new-look Wolf began work on Night Music, their third and final album. Hodkinson's arrival wasn't the only change evident on this set, many of tracks have a more abstract feel compared to their earlier work, with the album in general far "proggier" than its predecessors. This was partially due to the prominence of Darryl Way's synthesizer, particularly on "Anteros" and "We're Watching You," where it counterpoints John Etheridge's lovely guitar solo. Only on "Steal the World" does Way's violin play an important role. The set is more improvisational as well, but counter-intuitively less genre-bending, although the hints of British Beat that are tucked neatly into "Black September" and the funk that powers parts of "The Envoy" are strong reminders of Way's more eclectic past. Mostly, the album straddles rock and jazz, and although it too is a highly accessible set, only the final number, "Comrade of the Nine," could be described as catchy. Unfortunately, once again Way failed to break into the British charts, and when he was invited to return to his former band, Curved Air, he accepted the invitation, and his Wolf would roam free no more.

REVIEW/AMG
by Dave Thompson
The band's second album, released a few scant months after their debut, found Darryl Way and co. still edging away from the Curved Air ideal, without doing anything to truly alienate that band's loyal followers. Indeed, there were moments throughout Wolf's career when they sounded more like the original Air than that band's current incarnation ever could. Of course it's the mad violin that best confirms the similarities, but one can only dream of how dramatic this band could have been had they only reached a wider audience. Listening to Saturation Point is like walking a tightrope, a taut, nerve-bending ride that takes you from the eccentric peaks of "The Ache" and "Two Sisters" (combined, one of the greatest album overtures of the year), to the boleric attack of "Toy Symphony," a cut that raises the specters of Caravan and ELP, even as it shakes off comparisons with anything else. This was indeed the peak of Wolf's musical career, an album that snagged all the high points from its predecessor, then mashed them with the experience that the live show brought into reach.

by Jo-Ann Greene
After two successful years and three seminal albums, violinist Darryl Way departed Curved Air in search of a tougher, heavier sound. Gathering a trio of little known musicians around him -- future Soft Machine guitarist John Etheridge, vocalist/bassist and future Caravan member Dek Messecar, and future Trace and Marillion drummer Ian Mosley, Darryl Way swiftly inked a deal with Decca's Deram imprint.
The band's debut, Canis Lupus, was produced by King Crimson's Ian McDonald, who also provided his own piano skills to "Chanson Sans Paroles," one of a clutch of stellar instrumentals on the set. Here the band create a series of shifting moods, incorporating classical, rock, and jazz elements into the piece. Way's swirl of genres and tension between structure and improvisation was the key to their sound and the album. Entire sections of "The Void," for example, feature arpeggios soaring above R&B, with stately almost pomp rock passages haunted by Messecar's dreamy vocals. "Isolation Waltz" dances along Messecar's potent R&B bassline, even as Way's violin solo flips the piece towards classical. "Wolf," although somewhat beholden to Cream, also slides between genres, its gypsy flair adding a wild element to a piece that gracefully plays off classical against rock and the blues. The song's powerful melody made it an obvious choice for single. It's "Cadenza," however, that is the ultimate showcase of the musicians' considerable skills, with each member taking a solo turn -- Way gets two, on violin and Moog. The number storms merrily from classical to blues, jazz to rock, and throws in some country for good measure. Way is marvelous, but his personal epiphany is found on "McDonald's Lament," which features his most emotive violin playing. With its mixture of songs and inspired instrumentals, subtle hybrid styles, strong melodies, superb musicianship, and accessibility even at its most improvisational, Canis Lupus was feted by critics and prog rock fans alike.

Mask is a collaborative effort between ambient musician and producer Marvin Ayres and Curved Air/ Acid Folk vocalist Sonja Kristina. Together these two extremely talented individuals have created a spectacular and emotionally moving CD called Heavy Petal – The Tenebrous Odyssey of Jack and Virgina.
The music on Heavy Petal combines organic sounds with lush, layered ambient soundscapes as tribal beats kickstart the first sounds heard on Heavy Petal. Tracks such as opener "Dark Murmer" and "Global Incantation" serve almost as the perfect instrumental appetizer to prepare the listener for Kristina's vocals which first appear in the third track, the absolutely dreamy and reverb laden "Paean". By the time the fourth track "Fall So Hard" comes around, you are hooked as her exquisite vocals delivered over the rhythmic backbeat just suck you in completely. This track is probably the most commercial sounding one of the lot. Ayres delivers some utterly brilliant cello, violin and piano work for Kristina's vocals to just float over and around in the mix; everything jells and you'd swear this duo have worked together all of their lives. The tracks on Heavy Petal are sequenced and paced evenly as instrumental tacks are interspersed throughout. The duo show that they are more than just about painting ambient canvas's of sound as they switch gears smack in the middle of the CD suddenly changing to almost full on techno beginning with "Free" and continuing through to the last track "Living Inside My Head", which although not totally my bag, does provides a nice, unexpected change of pace and almost gives the listener the strange feeling that they've gotten 2 CD's for the price of one.
This is music to heighten the senses and it's no surprise that live Mask performances feature multimedia images projected behind them. If there was ever music that could benefit even more from visual imagery it's the music on the first half of this disc. For me this would have easily been a 5 star review had they stuck to the ambient sounds and moods created in tracks 1-7. The techno tracks didn't grab me and I found my attention starting to wane. However that being said, the first half of this CD moved me enough to still consider this to be an absolute treasure to listen to and if you ask me if I would recommend it, the answer would be a resounding yes!
BIOGRAPHY/AMG (SONJA KRISTINA)
Born 14 April 1949, Brentwood, Essex, England. Following the demise of her former band Curved Air, vocalist Kristina formed the hard rocking Escape and released a solo album in 1980 on the Chopper Records label. Marriage to her old band’s drummer Stewart Copeland, (who had since joined the hugely successful Police) and the rearing of two children delayed a resumption of an acting career that had been suspended since she resigned from the London cast of Hair in 1970 to join Curved Air. A role in the Curriculee Curricula musical and the lead in Romeo And Juliet were followed in 1988 by a spell performing in the UK’s arts centres and more adventurous folk clubs. Later, she was the brains behind a UK tour of acts from this circuit, before forming her own ‘psychedelic acoustic acid folk’ combo TY-LOR and Friends, whose personnel included a violinist and cellist. Subsequent albums confirmed an upturn in Kristina’s fortunes in the 90s. In the new millennium, she collaborated with composer Marvin Ayres in the highly experimental MASK project. The duo’s live shows are notable for their bold fusion of light and sound. Kristina has also taken part in the occasional Curved Air reunion and taught Performing Arts at Middlesex University.

2003 album from the former Curved Air vocalist, her first studio release for ten years, covers popular writers including Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk.
BIOGRAPHY/AMG

Originally released in 1994, and disappearing shortly thereafter, Harmonics of Love was the follow-up to Sonja Kristina's Songs from the Acid Folk album and is very much a continuation of that set. Topped, of course, by one of the most perfect voices in rock, and built around ten songs that hang exquisitely poised between, indeed, acid and folk, Harmonics of Love is closer in feel to the first couple of Curved Air albums than its predecessors -- "Sounds of Sea/Heart of Glass/Marimbas," in particular, echoes that era. But it's also a fresh start, dipping away from that band's classical prog leanings toward a naturalism that could almost be placed in the new age bag. But only almost, because Kristina's never been one for taking the soft option, and -- the mid-disc lull of "Lullaby/Baby Song" and "Woman's Heart" notwithstanding -- Harmonics of Love comes closer to a wild cross of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, without the pretentiousness. Near perfect in its original state, then, the album has been pushed even closer to glory by the six bonus tracks appended to Market Square's 2009 reissue. Opening with a glorious revision of "Melinda More or Less," it then rounds up Kristina's contributions to the Isaac Asimov and Motörhead tribute albums, plus four fabulous tracks by her current band, Mask. All blend ideally with the original album; all will send you scurrying back to the rest of Kristina's catalog.

by Dave Sleger
This 1991 recording marked a return of sorts for Sonja Kristina but not as the prog diva that she was known as during her tenure with Curved Air. Rather, Songs From the Acid Folk was a trail-blazing new acoustic project comprised mostly of Kristina's original songs, which are invariably profoundly personal and touching in nature. A sampling of Curved Air's early favorites like "Melinda More or Less" and "Back Street Luv" is included but with Kristina's new stripped down arrangement. The chilling "Colder Than a Rose" recorded on her self-entitled debut is also revisited here. An excellent cast of supporting musicians contributes to this album: Tim Whitaker on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, his percussionist brother Simon Whitaker, cellist Ali McKenzie, and violinist Paul Silas. In addition to Kristina's rich, deep voice she also plays acoustic guitar and accordion.

The messy end of Curved Air finally behind her, Sonja Kristina all but disappeared from the scene for a couple of years, before finally making a low-key comeback at the head of a new band, Escape. It was a tentative venture. Early gigs saw the band performing primarily to veteran fans who'd have preferred to hear their old favorites; it took time for a younger audience to catch on that Escape was actually shaping up to be one of the best live bands on the late-'70s club circuit -- and one of the best new wave bands full-stop. Firmly predicting all that Lene Lovich, Hazel O'Connor, and Toyah would be bringing to the Top 30 over the next couple of years, Escape's sound was firmly rooted in the present day, a succession of exhilarating, quirk-bedecked rockers that owed little more than their assurance to any past experience. When it came time to cut their debut album, however, Escape's name was barely visible on the sleeve. The marketing men knew Kristina was "the name"; now she was the artist as well. But it's still a full-on band effort, with the opening "Street Run," in particular, a sharp-edged rocker alive with both modern quirk and more classical undercurrents. The almost-world-music-flavored "Man He Colour," a cover of Spirit's "Mr Skin," and the single "St Tropez" likewise, position Kristina and Escape on the cutting edge of the latest musical fascinations, with producer Nigel Gray (best known at that time for his work with Kristina's husband Stewart Copeland's band, the Police) layering in some of his own finest work. It was all to no avail, however, Fans who might have picked up an album by Escape may not even have noticed one by their singer, and the older audience had long since been scared off by Kristina's relentless taste for modernity. The LP disappeared, and Escape quickly followed. It would be another quarter-century (the album's CD reissue) before either was heard from again.

ABOUT THE ALBUM/BY WIKIPEDIA
North Star is a studio album by Curved Air and was released on 17 March 2014. It was the first studio album of mostly new material since the band reformed in 2008, following 2008's Reborn (mostly re-recordings of material from their first five albums, with two new tracks), 2010's Retrospective (a "best-of" anthology of original recordings from 1970-1976 plus three tracks by MASK) and 2012's Live Atmosphere (live performances from 2010/11).
Although guitarist Kit Morgan is credited as co-writer of the seven new songs, by the time of recording he had left the band and his place was taken by the returning Kirby Gregory.
Three songs that originally appeared on the first two Curved Air albums were re-recorded, plus one from a Sonja Kristina solo album, and three covers of songs originated by other bands.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
ABOUT THE ALBUM/WIKIPEDIA
Live at the BBC is a compilation live album of the British progressive rock band Curved Air from sessions on:
November 10, 1970 (tracks 1-3)
January 5, 1971 (tracks 4-5)
March 9, 1971 (tracks 6-8)
January 29, 1976 (tracks 9-13)
The album's liner notes give conflicting dates for the sessions. The prose section lists the dates as above, while a secondary listing dates tracks 1-3 as April 28, 1970, places track 6 in the same session as tracks 4-5, and provides the unlikely date of January 27, 1971 (just three weeks after the previous session) for tracks 7 and 8.
The album was released in 1995.
The songs "Thinking On The Floor" and "Stark Naked" were never recorded in the studio, while the lyrics for "Young Mother In Style" are different from those of the song "Young Mother" on their Second Album.
Allmusic said the album was "typical of BBC rock compilations, with alternate live radio versions that serious fans will find highly enjoyable, though more casual admirers will find the material unnecessary." They noted the solid sound quality and lightly praised the band's blending of classical, rock, and folk.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
ABOUT THE ALBUM/WIKIPEDIA
Lovechild is the seventh studio album credited to progressive rock band Curved Air, though only half the tracks are actually performed by the group. The album consists of previously unreleased demos overseen by Clifford Adams in the early 1970s: one by John O'Hara, two by Eddie Jobson, one by Kirby, and four by Curved Air. Vocalist Sonja Kristina explained the album's origin:
''Now that album was total piracy. Those were demo tapes I made for Warner Brothers, who had suddenly realized that I was the only original member — that it wasn't really Curved Air as it had been before. So Clifford Davis presented the tapes to Warners who decided for various reasons that they weren't going to continue with the contract.''
As implied in Sonja Kristina's comment, Lovechild is essentially an "official" bootleg; neither Warner Brothers nor any of the band members gave permission for the demos to be released, and no royalties were paid to any of the band members from its sales. Years after she made the above comments, however, Repertoire Records obtained permission from both Warner Brothers and the musicians to reissue the album, and in 2011 a legit version with new liner notes was released, though unlike the original release it appeared only on CD.
The four Curved Air demos were recorded between Air Cut and the band's breakup. Jim Russell and Kirby Gregory had already left, and were replaced on the demos by Florian Pilkington-Miksa and Icelandic guitarist Thordur Arnason, known to the other band members as simply "Thor".
The album's cover is simply the artwork from the front cover of Airconditioning superimposed on the artwork from the back cover of the same album.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
ABOUT THE ALBUM/WIKIPEDIA
Airborne is the sixth studio album by Curved Air and was recorded in 1976. Like their last few releases, it was not a significant commercial success. After a follow-up non-album single, "Baby Please Don't Go" b/w "Broken Lady", the group disbanded. Drummer Stewart Copeland went on to form The Police, while violinist Darryl Way and lead singer Sonja Kristina both pursued solo careers. Bassist Reeves and guitarist Jacques both later became members of the semi-pro band Big Chief.
The Police covered "Kids to Blame" in their early performances, using a stripped-down punk arrangement of the song. Stewart Copeland also reused a guitar riff from "Desiree" in his hit solo single "Don't Care".
The album sessions marked the debut of Stewart Copeland as a songwriter. Around the release of Midnight Wire, he was informed about publishing royalties for songwriters, and responded by churning out compositions until the band accepted a few of his contributions.
Producer Dennis McKay quit the project midway through recording, leaving the remaining four tracks to be produced by Curved Air themselves.
Allmusic described Airborne as an overlooked record and "a strong summation of all that made the group so important in the first place." While appraising the album as a whole as weaker than their first three, claiming it veers towards generic 1970s rock, they regarded "Desiree" and "Heaven (never seemed so far away)" as equal to anything on the band's strongest releases.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
ABOUT THE ALBUM/WIKIPEDIA
Midnight Wire is the fifth studio album by Curved Air and was recorded in 1975. It marked another line-up change in the band, with Darryl Way and Sonja Kristina recruiting new musicians after the end of the reunion tour marked by the "Curved Air Live" album. Kristina's friend Norma Tager, who had helped design the costumes she wore onstage from Curved Air's reunion in 1974 to their breakup in 1976, contributed all the lyrics to the songs.
The album's recording was marked by intense and bitter arguments between the band and producers Ron and Howard Albert, who often vehemently criticized the band members.

The album's recording was marked by intense and bitter arguments between the band and producers Ron and Howard Albert, who often vehemently criticized the band members.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
REVIEW/AMG
by Dave Thompson
Although it was certainly recorded a couple of years too late to catch Curved Air in their prime, still 1975's Live offers a valuable historical footnote to the band's career. Dating from the fall 1974 reunion of the classic Sonja Kristina/Darryl Way/Francis Monkman/Florian Pilkington-Misk line up, Live was recorded in Cardiff and Bristol, England, that December, and serves up a 48 minute sampling of a live set that remained locked in the treasured trilogy of albums cut between 1970-73.
Highlights abound, from the opening strut of "It Happened Today", through a "Marie Antoinette" that is as dramatic as it is virtuosi, and onto a fiery "Everdance" that leaves even the shimmering original in the dust. Kristina herself is possibly in her best voice ever, while the instrumentation rides roughshod over the once-prevalent belief that Curved Air were at their best in the studio - Way's first album-era "Vivaldi" is nothing short of superlative (catch the "Sailor's Hornpipe" a few minutes in... and try to keep up with it!), while a brutal "Propositions" will take your breath away.
The separate sections that comprise "Marie Antionette" are more clearly defined than ever they were on Phantasmagoria, while "Back Street Luv" is simply astonishing, guitars and vocals combining to create a battlefield that bleeds emotion and energy in equal quantities. That song always meant a lot to Curved Air - the band's first (and only) hit single, in 1971, it was responsible for raising them out of the club circuit and into the realm of mainstream attractions. The sheer passion with which Kristina wraps herself around the lyric is no less than it... and Curved Air themselves... deserves.
ABOUT THE ALBUM/WIKIPEDIA
Curved Air – Live was the first official live album by the British progressive rock band Curved Air. It was recorded on the band's reunion tour in December 1974 and released in 1975.[1] Though it failed to enter the charts, it made enough profit to pay off the tax bill which had compelled Curved Air to reunite, allowing Monkman and Pilkington-Miksa to again leave the group.
Sonja Kristina's vocals on the album are atypical of her 1970s performances, both live and in the studio. By her own account, she was in a distraught emotional state following the breakup of her first marriage, and this provoked more wild and raw on-stage singing.
Allmusic wrote that "Kristina herself is possibly in her best voice ever, while the instrumentation rides roughshod over the... belief that Curved Air were at their best in the studio", offering high praise to nearly all of the individual cuts while criticizing none of them.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
REVIEW/AMG
by François Couture
Curved Air's fourth album featured a very different lineup and is considered by many a weaker effort. Of course, it does not have the bombast of Phantasmagoria (Francis Monkman's classical touch is cruelly missed), but it still has its share of strong moments. By 1973, only singer Sonja Kristina remained of the original members, but her voice suffices to keep the flame burning. She and bassist Mike Wedgewood, introduced with the previous LP, are joined by drummer Jim Russell, guitarist Gregory Kirby, and an 18-year-old violinist/keyboardist by the name of Eddie Jobson. "The Purple Speed Queen," a decent light psychedelic rock song, became one of the group's best-known tracks, and the ten-minute "Metamorphosis" still ranks high among the classic tracks of British progressive rock (here Jobson comes very close to Monkman's virtuosity at the piano). Side two of the original LP comprised a string of more straightforward rock numbers in the vein of Babe Ruth. Less striking, it pictured a group trying to widen its audience without sounding convinced it was the right thing to do. The album closer, "Easy," a lusher ballad, was nonetheless a good song. The only LP released by this lineup and the only Curved Air album with Jobson on it (he would join Roxy Music right after its completion), Air Cut is mostly remembered for introducing the future member of UK, Jethro Tull, and many other prog rock-related bands.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
REVIEW/AMG
by Dave Thompson
The sonic caveats which accompany Collector's Choice's other Curved Air reissues remain in force; the historical truth that what sounded timelessly groovy in 1971 is not necessarily so finger-snapping three decades later remains unimpeachable. But still, Phantasmagoria is a fabulous album, the culmination of all that Curved Air promised over the course of its predecessors; the yardstick by which all rock/classical hybrids should be measured. The opening "Marie Antoinette" sets the scene with lovely melody, impassioned vocal and a terrifically understated band performance which complements every syllable uttered by vocalist Sonja Kristina. The bridge into revolution ("the rabble have gone insane") is breathtaking -- history lessons should all sound this good, and the amazing thing is that the album has only just got started. The gentle "Melinda More or Less" is swirling, sweet folky psychedelia, while "Not Quite the Same," a somewhat self-conscious ode to masturbation, disguises its proggy inclinations with a barrelhouse 6/8 rhythm and a genuinely catchy hook. "Ultra-Vivaldi" updates the first album's "Vivaldi" by, apparently, letting the Chipmunks have a go at playing it. And the four-part, side-long title track switches moods, effects, and even genres (jazz, mariachi, and the avant-garde all get a look in) to create an dazzling soundscape which allows every members a moment to shine -- without once stepping into the treacherous swamps of solos and virtuosity. This was the original Curved Air's final album -- by the time the accompanying tour was over, only Kristina and bassist Mike Wedgwood (himself a spanking new arrival) remained to carry on the good work. As farewells go, then, it is magnificent, the band's grandest hour by far. And listening to it all these decades later, one cannot help but wonder how much grander they might have become?
