REVIEW
by Mark Deming/ALLMUSIC
The debut album from Diamond Rugs started out as a solo project from John
McCauley of Deer Tick, but after he recruited a curious but intriguing
lineup of musicians and they started playing together in the studio, he
found out he wasn't the only one on hand with ideas for songs. After
listening to the album, it's not hard to imagine that this revelation was
prompted by a certain amount of liquid refreshment; most of the best and
most enjoyable songs on Diamond Rugs involve getting drunk, and the
playing has the loose and loopy feel of a jam session where the players
were up for just about anything after a few beers. The musicians on
Diamond Rugs are good enough to make these performances sound potent and
emphatic, with Ian Saint Pe of the Black Lips and Hardy Morris of Dead
Confederate on guitars, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos on sax and keys, Robbie
Crowell of Deer Tick on bass, and Bryan Dufresne of Six Finger Satellite
behind the drums. The songs have a ragged swagger that lurks somewhere
between a Stones tribute act and the second-best garage band in town, and
this ad hoc group tears into their makeshift tunes with commendable
vigor, if a sometimes shaky grasp. In the supergroup stakes, Diamond Rugs
most clearly recall Golden Smog in the way the songs reflects the
personalities of the individual members and feel more like a boozy hoot
than an attempt to fashion a new body of "serious" work. If this isn't as
good as Golden Smog's small body of work, one could reasonably argue that
outside of Steve Berlin, no one in Diamond Rugs has made a record as good
as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Hollywood Town Hall, or Hang Time, all of which
have ties to the Golden Smog brand. Still, Diamond Rugs is a lot more fun
and less self-conscious than what Deer Tick usually delivers, and these
guys might do well to pony up for a couple cases of beer and give this
another try, though no one involved is advised to give up their other
gigs yet.

REVIEW
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine/ALLMUSIC
Peter Wolf lost his mainstream audience long before he released Fool's Parade in the fall of 1998. By the time the album hit the stores, it had been ten years since he had graced the Top 40, when "Come as You Are" reached number 15. To his credit, Wolf realized he no longer was a pop star, so he decided to continue in the vein of his comeback record, 1996's Long Line. Which is to say, Fool's Parade is a collection of rock & roll, R&B, blues and soul, all delivered with professional showmanship from Wolf, along with a surplus of true heart and passion. It's a mature album in the best sense of the word -- it's clear that Wolf has lived the life he sings about, and he exhibits a sense of craft that only veterans can convey. Following the equally accomplished Long Line, Fool's Parade is proof that veteran rockers need not be washed up or written off, even if they are no longer playing to stadium-sized crowds.

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine/Allmusic
Just at the moment Mott the Hoople were calling it a day, David Bowie swooped in and convinced them to stick around. Bowie spearheaded an image makeover, urging them to glam themselves up. He gave them a surefire hit with "All the Young Dudes," had them cover his idol's "Sweet Jane," and produced All the Young Dudes, the album that was designed to make them stars. Lo and behold, it did, which is as much a testament to Bowie's popularity as it is to his studio skill. Not to discount his assistance, since his production results in one of the most satisfying glam records and the title track is one of the all-time great rock songs, but the album wouldn't have worked if Mott hadn't already found its voice on Brain Capers. True, Dudes isn't nearly as wild as its predecessor, but the band's swagger is unmistakable underneath the flair and Ian Hunter remains on a songwriting roll, with "Momma's Little Jewel," "Sucker," and "One of the Boys" standing among his best. Take a close look at the credits, though -- these were all co-written by his bandmates, and the other highlight, "Ready for Love/After Lights," is penned entirely by Mick Ralphs, who would later revive the first section with Bad Company. The entire band was on a roll here, turning out great performances and writing with vigor. They may not be as sexy as either Bowie or Bolan, but they make up for it with knowing humor, huge riffs, and terrific tunes, dressed up with style by Ziggy himself. No wonder it's not just a great Mott record -- it's one of the defining glam platters.

REVIEW
by Stanton Swihart/Allmusic
Their first album got a nice publicity push by virtue of the band's association with crime novelist Elmore Leonard, who wrote them into his music-biz novel Be Cool, but the Stone Coyotes unload a potent wallop that stands quite wonderfully on its own merits, which their third offering again goes a long way towards proving. Put plainly, the trio makes an awesomely raw, stripped-down rock & roll racket. The guitar riffs on the overdriven numbers do indeed bare a much publicized kindred spirit to those of AC/DC, and the pop-and-son rhythm section is awesomely boozy like ZZ Top. The metronomic thwap of Doug Tibbles coupled with progeny John's grumbling-blues bass grooves is rock at its very purest and most urgent. Punk, really, if you think about it. And all due respect to Bon Scott, Brian Johnson, and the be-bearded Texans, but none of them have the cool, sexy croon of Barbara Keith. As bold as it might be to claim, neither band comes up with hooks as tasty as hers either, nor lyrics (stripped of their machismo but not their swagger) that have as much of an impact. Nor have those units ever shown the ability to toss off the odd slow-burning cover (Dolly Parton's "Jolene") or pretty, poignant ballad ("Detroit or Buffalo," which originally found a home on one of Keith's two early-'70s solo albums). In many ways the band flies in the face of conventional wisdom. At an age (which is to say middle-age) when most rockers this side of the Rolling Stones are either hanging up their leather pants or switching to a genre more conducive to maturity (say folk or country), Keith and Tibbles seem to be just hitting their stride, and they out-snarl musicians half their age. If you don't believe it, Keith tells you herself in "American Child," with a chorus as perfect and to the point as they come: "Give me Jerry Lee Lewis/Give me Joey Ramone." Elsewhere, the band writes a sort of sequel to "I Love Rock-n-Roll," which Joan Jett would be smart to snag. Born to Howl simply transforms four chords into rock nirvana.

REVIEW
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine/Allmusic
Long Line is Peter Wolf's '90s comeback album and it does everything that it should do. It demonstrates that Wolf has matured without abandoning his love for greasy R&B and loud rock & roll. Although the songs are slightly uneven throughout Long Line, he demonstrates humor and compassion even on the weak numbers. With its energetic rockers and, especially, heartfelt ballads, Long Line ranks as one of Wolf's most engaging and consistent albums.

REVIEW
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine/Allmusic
Since they had little success and seemed to be going off the tracks, Mott the Hoople was encouraged to produce their third album with anyone that wasn't Guy Stevens. Eventually, they chose themselves, creating a record that is bright and punchy, standing in direct contrast to Mad Shadow's enveloping fog. They wound up with Wildlife, a record that still seems a little transitional, yet is considerably more confident, unified, and enjoyable. Ironically, even if this is a much better record, few songs are as immediately gripping as "Walkin' with a Mountain," but both Mick Ralphs and Ian Hunter turn out some fine rockers, while driving the group toward some interesting territory, like the string-drenched "Waterlow," the country-tinged "It Must Be Love," and the ambling "Original Mixed-Up Kid," or even the surprisingly straight and faithful reading of Melanie's "Lay Down." These give the record a slightly rural feel, lending credence to the title, and the album is unique in Mott's decidedly urban body of work for that very reason -- it's lighter, quirkier, and more friendly than the rest. Of course, it didn't widen their audience, and they returned to brutal rock with Brain Capers, but in retrospect it's a charming anomaly in their catalog.
