Watery Wednesday- Alaska

These pictures were all taken at the same lake somewhere in Alaska...I don't remember where. I just thought the reflection was neat!

Crater Lake National Park-Oregon

The "Phantom Ship"

You could take a tour around Crater Lake in the boats that you see above, if you wanted to.
This is where my family and I went on vacation this past summer. We spent 2 weeks exploring Oregon and Washington. Crater Lake was probably the most beautiful part of the whole entire trip. The deep blue color of the water you see in the pictures is what it really looks like, if not even darker. Crater Lake is 1,943 ft deep at its deepest point, making it the 7th deepest lake in the world and the deepest lake in the US.

Mellow Yellow Monday-Belize

This is just one of the many beautiful sunsets that we saw on South Water Caye, Belize! That's an osprey perched on the top of the tree in the second picture. This island was basically our own for an entire week!

Great Horned Owl

These pictures are from Sapelo Island, Georgia, which is a barrier island north of Cumberland Island National Seashore. We saw this Great Horned Owl standing in the middle of the road and when we got closer we realized that something was wrong with it because it just started hopping away instead of flying. So my professor and his grad student went after it and caught it. We took it back to the UGA marine institute so somebody could hopefully rehab it. We heard about a month later that it had made a full recovery and was released!!

Muscatatuck NWR

The work of beavers
Richart Lake
Myer's barn
McDonald Marsh South
McDonald Marsh North

This is where I interned this summer. Muscatatuck NWR is in Seymour, IN and a wetland area. There are lots of birds that migrate through here throughout the year. Some of the less common birds I saw this summer include white ibises, a white-winged scoter, common moorhen, american bittern, least bittern, whitstling ducks, and black-crowned night heron. I also saw many mammals, like beavers, minks, deer, foxes, river otters, coyotes, muskrats, and groundhogs. It was a great summer and I really enjoyed myself!

Southern Illinois- Mammalogy Field Trip

Eptesicus fuscus- Big Brown Bat
Perimyotis subflavus- Eastern Pipistrelle with condensation on it

These bats were seen in a mine owned by UNIMIN. We could get so close to them because they were hibernating. They slowly woke up as we were in there.

This is part of the Mammalogy collection at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. They have an enormous collection which is pretty cool. Notice all of the ribs on the sloth that support its organs since it hangs from trees its entire life. It forms a sort of basket-like shape.

Garden of the Gods- This was a site where the endangered Neotoma floridana (Eastern Woodrat) was re-introduced.
