Write on the chalkboard the words CULTURAL ARTS and post a drawing from my 3 year old.
Ask the girls to say what comes to mind when they see these words.
Explain that the cultural arts include such things as literature, drama, classical music, dance, sculpture, and painting.
Explain that the cultural arts have a powerful effect on our minds and spirits. They can touch our spirits as words alone sometimes cannot do, and their effect is often long-lasting.
Ask the young women to share some experiences they have had with the cultural arts. Why did you pursue them?
Explain that cultural arts of high quality can bring a refining influence into our lives. They fulfill a basic human need to enjoy and participate in the beauty around us and in our cultural heritage.
I wouldn’t consider myself a person that is drawn to the cultural arts (naturally). But I do take the opportunity to participate in them whenever I can. Whenever I travel, I make sure I see the local arts of that area. (For instance… examples…
• Travel for business I would be sure to go to the MET, MOMA or Art Institute of Chicago.
• Travel around the world for sure the Louvre, Uffizi, Cairo Musuem, etc)
• Bernini sculpture, Nutcraker in as many places as I can (even my YW production), Shakespear in the Park.
Seeing these places makes me feel more well-rounded, refined as a person and smarter because of the things I have seen. I would encourage you to take every opportunity to see the arts when you travel (it might not be as fun as some other they things you will do on vacation, but you will be better off because of it).
LET’s EXPERIENCE THE ARTS TODAY:
• Listen to Puccini (la Boheme).
• Show Carl Bloc painting
• Watch a clip from Much Ado about Nothing
• Read a Poem
Ask the girls how they felt after each piece?
Read 13th Article of Faith
President Spencer W. Kimball said: “Each member [of the Church] should develop talents, read good literature, be engaged in quality cultural pursuits” (Ensign, May 1978, p. 101).
Ask the young women to help compile a list in which they can seek to enrich their lives with the cultural arts and prepare to enrich the lives of their children and others. Some ideas might include the following:
• Go to the library and select a classic work of literature to read alone or with a friend.
• Read a favorite poem or share a piece of music with your family and tell why you like it (maybe for FHE).
• Write a poem yourself or lyrics for a piece of music.
• Write a dramatization of a scriptural story for your class or family.
• Look through your music and books and eliminate those that are not uplifting.
• Begin or add to your collection of quality music or books.
• Frame some beautiful artwork for your room.
• Try sketching, caligraphy, drawing, or some other form of art.
• Study a play, piece of music, or opera before attending a performance.
• Be selective about television viewing and watch for educational and cultural programs.
In the book “If Talent Were A Pizza, You'd Be A Supreme” by Jack Weyland, he talks about how when we were in kindergarten we all got our artwork put up on the wall. Then as we got older, only the best artwork went up. Then we started to get graded. Pretty soon, we gave up on trying because we didn't want to fail. Failing is okay - some of the best things I've seen are a result of failure. Even if you just aren't good, you gain an appreciation for those who can.
In my youth, I tried all mediums of the arts. Share what I did for sculpture, drawing (entered state fair), singing (jerusalem), music (piano for 8 years), dance, writing (book). I wasn’t good at all of them, but I tried and had fun while doing them. This experimentation helped me develop my talents and figure out where my special gifts lie.
Encourage them to do the same and end with testimony about the arts.
Give them the candy cane handout.
