La Place is an inexpensive self-service restaurant in the centre of Amsterdam and is a great place to grab a breakfast, lunch or dinner. La Place Kalverstraat re-opened in June 2019 having been partly rebuilt and totally refurbished.
La Place used to be part of the Vroom & Dreesman (V&D) department store which went bankrupt and closed in 2016. La Place was bought soon afterward by the Jumbo supermarket group and the Kalverstraat restaurant briefly re-opened for a while before closing down again for demolition and reconstruction.
The new La Place now has an alleyway running between itself and the former V&D building. The monumental buildings on the Rokin side have remained, whilst the Kalverstraat part has been completely rebuilt. The layout still feels a bit like the old La Place restaurant but with a more modern and fresh design.
The food counters run throughout the ground floor on the Kalverstraat side.
La Place has a good range of fresh food available with some organic food and plenty of veggie choices. Options include sandwiches with a selection of baguette and focaccia rolls with various fillings. There is a salad bar with a self-service selection as well as salad dishes.
If you are looking for hot food there are soups, pizza, pasta and noodle dishes, plus a more substantial meat and fish grill section where the food is cooked in front of you. La Place also serves some very good chips as well.
La Place is known for its fruit juices and smoothies but it also offers hot drinks, cakes/tarts, soft drinks, wines and beer. Sandwiches are priced around the €5 mark, mains tend to be €7 to €15. A breakfast assortment in the morning runs until 1100.
The seating areas on the upper floors are very stylish and the glass roof of the building provides some natural light.
There is also a Roof Garden Café on the top floor with barista coffee and decorated with plants.
On our first visit to the reopened restaurant we tried a salad dish which was excellent. In fact it was probably the best meal we’ve ever had at any La Place.
The restaurant was not particularly busy on our weekday lunchtime visit and there was plenty of seating available. La Place Kalverstraat was in the past well known to both visitors and locals, and could get quite crowded – especially when free walking tour groups would be brought in.
La Place Kalverstraat will surely re-establish itself in due course as a very popular lunchtime spot in Amsterdam.
