Dumbfounded
I find it quite sad and worrisome to read about how smart young women can be so gullible to believe men they met through social networking sites such as Facebook.
Recently, a young women from our own state has become the latest victim for drug mules. She was arrested in China after being duped by an African man she befriended in Facebook. The said man promised her an all expense paid trip to China. Before her departure to China, the "friend" told her to swallow 100 pills containing heroine. She was arrested upon arrival after the Chinese narcotics officials detected the pills inside her stomach.
There were red flags everywhere, warning her about this good-for-nothing friend!! She's a college student for heaven sake!! She should have known better, especially when asked to swallow that detrimental pills. But, who am I to judge her? That imbecile would have sweet talked her into being a drug ass.
I wonder what made intelligent young women like this girl got involved with such scams. Is it a lack of parental guidance? Is it because of too much parental guidance? Lack of self esteem? Or is it the allure of a forbidden/mysterious relationship with a stranger? Or is it the blurring of lines between a "real" friends and virtual acquaintances?
For whatever the reason is, I am going to teach my students about these scams and see what they would they respond about it.
Have a nice day!
