Cambridge Day 2010

It all began with an email from Roslyn about registration for Cambridge Day 2010 to be held at Novotel Hotel, 1Borneo.

So, after I asked for my boss' permission to attend (and he surprisingly said YES!), I packed my bag and drag my colleague to the venue on Friday morning.

Little did I know that I was going to jejak kasih with my lecturers and university friends there. I also made several acquaintances who happened to be good contacts when it comes to English teaching and learning. And of course, the food was heaven sent. I was in cuisine heaven. Three islands of food?? Diet? What's that?

I also realised that I need to brush up my ESL knowledge...you know, things we've learned from college like extensive and intensive reading, explaining language using language-gy words like "replacing the verb 'to be' "; "imperatives", "gerunds", etc..etc...

And I am so awed by the confidence shown by the teachers there. They spoke with such confidence and full of conviction that I need to pinch and remind myself that they're locals. Where has that Jacinta gone to? Am I so comfortable in my comfort zone that I refused to leave?

The speakers had reignited my passion for ESL research. I was so inspired that I already planned on doing a research on how reading can help improve language learning. I know, I am such a research geek.

Despite being a bit clueless and lightheaded after the 2 hours drive and half day seminar, I took the chance of window shopping at 1B. I could not help wishing that the seminar was on a Wednesday.

Now that the holidays is near, I am proud to annouce that my social calendar is pack and loaded!!

KK watch out... :-)

Will I be the next top Bornean Blogger?

Okay...maybe not.

But there's still a 50% chance of maybe, right?

So, the campaigning already started and I'm at lost for words.
What should I say?

For starters, scroll down and you'll see a Vote For Me button from BorneoColours.com.
Just point your mouse there and click hehehe
But you have to register as a BCBuddy first in order to be eligible to vote.

Second on the menu is the reasons why you should spare me at least one vote...

You surely don't want your friend to be the "uncit-est" in the competition now, do you? GGs, your vote is compulsory! Or I won't lend you my latest chick lits...hahaha..I kid..I kid!

#2. I can write well.
Okay, so there's no relevance but hey, it's still a valid reason, right? :-P

Ya, I got nice pictures here...check out many of my 2010 posts and you'll see them in technicolor. Well, it's not professionally taken but it's nice...really!

Five Reasons Why Being a Teacher Rocks!!

Reason #1:
Before a nobody becomes a somebody, they all started from a mere classroom where a teacher patiently stands teaching how to read and write...
If there was a person who say, I am what I am today
It all began from what a teacher say.

Who can top a power like that?

Reason #2:
You become a walking dictionary or encyclopaedia because Andy wants to know who is Aurora Borealis.
You become the Master of Spellers because Ain doesn't know how to spell "spell".

Reason #3:
When the kids go off on holidays, so do you.
(Well, at least...you still got that paid vacation).

Reason #4:
Despite the workload is burdensome,
despite the pay is quite okayyyy for an average labourer,
When Stevian and Ikram,
Daybie and Asnie said,
"Teacher, thanks for helping me understand that a cattle is different from a kettle"
or when they finally leave school and ignored you for years, suddenly you received smses saying,
"You're the best teacher I've ever had. Thanks to you I'm now a (insert profession here)"
You'll suddenly have a brief amnesia on how your work sucks and realised that
you have just made a difference in someone's life
with just a marker pen at a time.

Reason #5:
Because teachers rock. Period.

Happy Teachers' Day.

Jika hari ini seorang Perdana Menteri berkuasa
Jika hari ini seorang Raja menaiki takhta
Jika hari ini seorang Presiden sebuah negara
Jika hari ini seorang ulama yang mulia
Jika hari ini seorang peguam menang bicara
Jika hari ini seorang penulis terkemuka
Jika hari ini siapa sahaja menjadi dewasa;
Sejarahnya dimulakan oleh seorang guru biasa
Dengan lembut sabarnya mengajar tulis-baca.
Di mana-mana dia berdiri di muka muridnya
Di sebuah sekolah mewah di Ibu Kota
Di bangunan tua sekolah Hulu Terengganu
Dia adalah guru mewakili seribu buku;
Semakin terpencil duduknya di ceruk desa
Semakin bererti tugasnya kepada negara.
Jadilah apa pun pada akhir kehidupanmu, guruku
Budi yang diapungkan di dulangi ilmu
Panggilan keramat "cikgu" kekal terpahat
Menjadi kenangan ke akhir hayat.

My Mother's Memoirs

Recently, I've found some of my mum's personal momentos i.e. old photographs. When I looked at it, I feel like I'm venturing into an unknown world. Unknown but exciting. Looking at my mum at a young age made me feel...well, nostalgic. I guess I am a classic soul..if there is even a term.

The above picture is my mum in her early teens. Cute pula dia punya uniform ni dulu-dulu..

This was Mr. James Anderson. I don't know who is he, could be a pen-pal or something. Before there was social networking websites, we used to write letters to penpals, remember?

At the back of Mr Anderson's portrait was Mum's handwriting. I think it's the trend back then to write about someone at the back of the photo.

My late grandfather, Aki Tulas. Looking at his picture, I couldn't help but reminisce about my childhood. He was the best grandfather a child could ever have. I miss him so much.

My grandfather's handwriting at the back of his photo. He used to write diaries until his sick days. I can still remember seeing him writing into a log book about the "Rumah Sawang" (that's my grandparents' home in Melalap) being renovated. It was 1993. I think I took writing journals from him.

I guess pictures like this serve as a reminder that there is a legacy in our family. No wonder we love photographs :-)

Have a nice day!
