Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

It's Christmas Eve today and it's mum's birthday as well. December is supposed to be a month of cheer and happiness, but sadly today I'm feeling not so gay (happy-lah!) as I used to. Could be that female hormones raging or maybe I just lose my mojo. Gosh, I don't want to lose it yet...I need mojos to get me going through crappy days!! See. I'm raving like a lunatic.

I also felt so empty. Why that? I am surrounded by friends! Since the end of November, my social calendar is filled with outings, gatherings and food meetings. Today, I purposely stay in because Mum's coming from Keningau and surely she does want to see our house Christmasey. I think it's because of the sudden inertia of activities. Oh, well...

I won't let my hormones rule my Christmas, that's a promise.

P/S: I'll be performing with my cousin, Darren at the Stella Maris Church Golden Jubilee celebration dinner on the 28th December 2008. THis is one of the craziest things I am doing this year, so if you want to come and support (or just there for the food or you just want to play critic) datanglah kalau berani!!

BLESSED CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009 everyone!
May God bless all of you :-)

TESL Cohort One Our Story - Of Memories that made me smile

We did it!! We graduated with honours!!

If I had fallen to my fear and did not take the chance of just get on that bus to submit my application for the TESL Link Programme, I may not have crossed paths with these incredible individuals.

After reading my former classmate and schoolmate's blog post (Tania's blog, do check out her blog), I was inspired by the idea of listing my 10 favourite moments with my former TESLians from IP Gaya. It may be in chronological order, but there's no level of favouritism here...samaaaaaa jaaaaaa...loved every minute of it!! So, here goes:

(1)
Hari Merdeka choir performance
"Standing in the eyes of the world"
Our very first performance to the maktab's inhabitants. Everyone was still innocent, we were told that ALL courses WAJIB perform. Sekali nda payah punnnn...cheh...

(2)
Our orientation with the seniors and MMS
Paling sia malas ni time sebab nda pasal2 kena cuci telinga pasal kami semua masi blur between KPLI and B.Ed.TESL. The seniors were trying to make us remain on the ground. No offense but it seemed like they were a bit jealous...hmmm...as for MMS, tu lagilah...berabis tu fasilitator marah2 kunun, tapi kami semua buat dunno ja hahaha...sayang air liur dorang

(3)
Educating Rita
Our first "flop". It was three hours long and people were seen leaving the hall. But surprisingly, it had done us good cos in the exam, we were able to answer the questions based on the play very well. Rote memorization do work sometimes...I also recall our days off using drama excuse...

(4)
Playing in the class while the lecturer was out
Oh well...it does remind me of ol'school days...bergossip sesama kawan...main WiFi dalam kelas, berYM kunun padahal bersebelahan ja...buat lawak yang tidak bertempat, then tilt our heads and laughed collectively till our tears came out.

(5)
A Midsummer Night's Dream - The Musical
Our first effort creating a musical and dramatising Shakespeare. It was a memorable experience, we had live band playing the music for us, we had full house audiences, we had major fights, we had major fun, we had sore hands and legs carrying the musical instruments to and fro from the hall to the music room (which is at another block), we faced red tapes and overcame the obstacles...personally, I think this venture had brought us closer together.

(6)
Teacher's Day "What a Wonderful World" Choir Performance
Our first performance with our Cohort 2 friends, singing Sam Cook's acapella rendition of What a Wonderful World.

(7)
Escapades from assemblies, GERKO and other gatherings
Oh, yes...we don't like to waste time at assemblies...pernah satu kali our escapade from assembly kena foiled by Encik Aziz...malunya...proud to know our juniors are doing their own escapade episodes as well ;-) Keep it up!

(8)
Research Seminar
Our final year project. Made it a point to make our last semester a BANG!! We did it despite being amateurs at researches (and being a lzy bum at it hehehe)

(9)
Before and after classes illegal gathering
The gatherings were usually held at the cafe - whether it was recess or not. Some would sip coffee, milo ais or any drinks while eating a three-course meal which typically"decorated" with the must have sotong goreng. The meal was consumed with bits of personal anecdotes which were then improvised into a lawak session. Sometimes, several unlucky "pelatihs" were made the object of humour. As we get "older" (after all, we spent 6 years in the institution) the gatherings were made outside of the maktab's compound - Fook Yuen was one of the places. If allowance came out, a pricier place will be chosen.

(10)
Shah Alam moments
Who can ever forget the things we did in Shah Alam?? hahaha...you go ponder yourselves, ging! Life is an adventure for us...too bad we didn't get the allowance we got in semester 8! I am fond of our Language Camp in Fraser's Hill, wow! A very nice camp indeed!

I am going to miss every single one of Cohort One.

All the best ;-)

Kaansayan Sumaang Ra Orou Pantutunan Ru Papag Ri Rundi

My mum's side of the family was the host of the Rundi's Family Day on the 6th December 2008. Rundi was my great-grandfather's name, who happens to the father of my grandmother, Kinsiu. On that day, all of the living Rundi's offspring and their offsprings, with their spouses and offsprings gathered and joined in with the merriment.

The gathering was a trip down memory lane for me as I sat with my cousins and exchanged childhood stories. Here are some of the memories captured :

There's Bob, watched by Titi and Amoy, putting up the finishing touches on the banner.

Some of my uncles and aunties and arus (that's grandmothers in Murut) as well as akis (grandfathers) enjoying the local alcohol affectionately known as tapai.

Us cousins posing on the verandah where we always gather whenever there were family gatherings. It seems like the verandah is now too small for all of us. This is just a fifth of Kinsiu's grandchildren.

This is one of my second cousins. She is from Ampawi Rundi's side of the family. I tried asking her name but she didn't respond clearly. One of her cousins told me, "Dia pandai cakap Inggilis saja tuh." Patutlah...

This is some of my second cousins as well. Yang singlet biru tu lah yang kasitau sia pasal cousin dia yang di atas tu.

Do you still remember ada satu jenis ice-cream yang paling murah...harga dia 20sen seja. Just concoct your favourite juice and pour it in a cylindrical plastic. Dulu-dulu, when we were small, we used to buy this ice-cream. My late grandfather, Tulas also used to "bribe" us little children with this ice-cream. It felt so good to taste it again and that it's comforting to know that the price is still 20sen.

Back when we were kids, we used to play masak-masak and we plucked all the flowers available around our grandparent's house. Our mums used to scold us, but our grandparents always said "Biarlah dorang..." The tradition continues ;-) I asked my cousin, Clare (the sweet little girl in the pink dress), "Apa ko buat, Clare?" "Masak..."she answered. "Masak apa?" I asked again. "Ini bungalah,"she replied, matter-of-factly. I couldn't help but wonder...where is this kid's imagination? hehehe

While we were hanging out on the verandah, this happened at the "backyard", a dewan where all maginums were held. We Murut Timugons are loud people and we do know how to rock the house!! Luckily our grandparent's house is strong enough to handle parties like this!! HAHAHAHA

All in all, we had a great time. By the end of the party, I was exhausted but happy. It's nice to get to know your extended family once in a while.

Paringkuanangan for reading my post.

Of Vacays and Convos - Jottings

I don't know how to start this entry because as I was typing on, my head is overwhelmed with many exciting thoughts that I was so afraid to forget what I wanted to write about. It was like a surge of emotions - all happy thoughts coming to me like candies raining from the sky..if ever. Somehow, I really, really, really have to blog and tell (and flaunt) about one of the most memorable and unforgettable days of my life.

27th November 2008

- Arrived at the LCCT Airport in Tg Aru after brekkie with Dad. Met Anie and her beautiful princess and we talked all the way until I safely checked in. Met Mary and Fuwa (my roomies at the hotel) and talked and talked. Met Eric and talked and talked and talked over breakfast. Met Carol inside the boarding hall and talked and talked.

-9.50a.m. - Got into the plane...still talking and lawaking with the trio. Eric and I sat in front of Mary and Fuwa at the rear of the plane...talking continues until Eric fall asleep with his sunnies on, looking like a sleepy Korean tourist. Meanwhile, Mary, Fuwa and I "silik-silik" mata with the handsome guy playing his PSP Lite across from Eric.

-12.25p.m - Arrived in LCCT KL. We were the first to board off the plane. Handsome guy walked next to us...oogling continued. As we reached the baggage train, HG walked on. Alaa...never mind. Luckily our luggage came out early hehe. Bought bus tickets from LCCT to Puduraya and went out to Platform 5. Told ourselves "Eric, Jacinta, Mary and Siti Marfoah...you are the first team to arrive." Cheh. Saw HG again!! His MyVi arrived and a pretty lady came out of the car. Kasi hibur hati by saying "Adik dia bah tu..." but then got crushed cos HG kissed her on the forehead and cuddle2 with her. Kasi hibur hati again by saying "Orang sini memang sangat rapat sama adik dorang." Journey continued to Puduraya.

- 2.00pm - Checked in to MayView Glory Hotel, Puduraya. Welcomed by Sheila, the friendly receptionist. Although our room was supposed to be a Family Room, it was tad small. But we don't care cos retail theraphy is waiting!!! Hehehehe. Barely a few hours arriving, we ladies bought ourselves Anna Sui purses from Petaling Street. Got caught in the heavy KL rain and had dinner at a nearby mamak restaurant. Went back to the hotel and sleep...for two hours only.

28th November 2008

-6.00am till 2pm - "Paitung" our faces and get ready to go to KL Sentral. After an hour, we finally left the hotel cos we had to wait for this tall guy to finish mekap. When we reached Sentral, got a train to Shah Alam and board Rapid to UiTM Main Campus. Welcomed by a sea of people. Met with everyone, huggies and air kisses exchanged. Got my robe, hood and mortar board and booked the studio photo. Left UiTM and back to KL where retail theraphy continues.

-3pm onwards- Back at the hotel and buat lawak with the girls. Jalan2 di Sungei Wang and Times Square. Bought the latest Twilight novels and spend more than a hundred RMs at Borders. It feels so good to have purchasing power. Had sushi dinner at Felly's room and then rest for the day.

29th - 30th November 2008 - Shopping continues. Our parents started to come. We checked-in to separate rooms and prepared for convo on the 1st December.

Lubi and I buat lawak at our hotel room.
(Up) Alicia trying to take photo of herself while waiting for others to finish paitung faces.
(Down) What happens when girls shop? Total chaos.

(Down) Mayview Glory might be a budget hotel but look at this glorious view outside my hotel room. Nice, kan?

1st December 2008

CONVOCATION DAY!! More pictures in my Facebook account. I was sick on my convocation day...damn!! Luckily I didn't cough in front of VC while receiving my scroll. Penat berdiri during penyusunan graduat but damn proud during perarakan graduan. Felt goosebumps when the Tombak and Keris Besar were brought into the hall before ceremony begins. Can't forget when the screen showed someone's dad "sigung" secara live...lucu lucu...

2nd December 2008

-Shopping continues at Sunway Pyramid with Mum and Dad.

3rd December 2008.
- Home Sweet Home ;-)

What if your soul mate is right in front of your eyes?

Yesterday morning, after church I went for brekkie alone at my fave shop in GM(sobs...sia kelaparan sudah bah...bergegar2 ni driving, time di Mass pun ndak concentrate). While waiting for my food and nice cuppa java to arrive, I observed something so amusing that I got the inspiration to write about it. There was this young couple, about mid-twenties, sitting next to each other, eating silently. I noticed the occasional eye contact, but none of that "I suap you and you suap me" PDA-ish thingy...hmmm...anywho, I also noticed that everytime the boyfriend looked elsewhere or eating his food, the girlfriend was looking intently at somewhere else, or should I say...someone else. I hope I didn't exposed myself...luckily I didn't, cos if I did, manalah sia terkasitau kamurang kan?

I thought she was merely looking or glancing, but I noticed that she was looking at a guy at the corner table. Well, he looks like an average Joe, but who knows there might be some hidden passion behind that guy. In my eyes, cumil bah juga the kusai. She looked softly at him, you can notice that something is going on inside her...then, she let out a sigh.

The guy she was looking at, also returned her glances. His eyes were intense and I could see some sparks flying...bzzz...bzzz...bzzzz...then when I glanced at the girl, dia pula tersipu-sipu makan kunun. YAIIII...

Dalam hati sia, apa bah kamurang main tingu-tingu ni?

I think the girl memang lama sudah minat sama ni lelaki, walaupun dorang macam strangers in the night. Before they left (and my watanho sejuk suda...) the girl's boyfriend pi shake hands sama the guy. Cheh, berkawan pula dorang ni. I was asking myself, didn't he noticed that intense glancing or come-hither eye contact between his friend and girlfriend? I observed the girl's behaviour as they were leaving the premise. Her smile was polite and her eyes were sad. And the guy's? He looked at his friend and then to the girl, then he looked away...looking at his coffee kunun.

Mungkin ada cerita bah di sebalik lakonan dorang ni. Maybe at one moment in time, they had feelings for each other but none of them dared to take the chance. Maybe both of them fear rejection or their feelings not reciprocal. Or maybe there's trouble in the girl's relationship?

Anyhow, what would you do if your soul mate is right in front of you? He or she is there, waiting...looking...hoping that you would come up first...and show them your feelings.

Kalau sia?

Hmm...sakit bah rejection. Kalah2 sakit kena jarum oleh beribu-ribu jarum.

But if I didn't confess, until when should I wait? I don't want to spend my life with a guy I barely love and surely I don't want to look what could be and sigh.

My Verdict?

I'll Let You Know...Soon.

hehehehehehehe

A Message From a Comedian

I got this message via email from one of my former students, Gloria. I find this message witty, yet it made me think of how real the circumstances mentioned in his message. It was written by George Carlin, one of America's greatest comedian.

Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate.

A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways ,
but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

TWILIGHT

Forbidden love between a mortal and a vampire?

Sounds...romantic.

Twilight, according to its official website tells us about the love between an ordinary girl named Bella Swan and a vampire (a very handsome vampire) Edward Cullen. According to website (which you can check out at http://www.twilightthemovie.com) TWILIGHT is an action-packed, modern-day love story between a teenage girl and a vampire.

Here's the synopsis:
Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother re-marries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn't expect much of anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she's ever met. Edward is a vampire, but he doesn't have fangs and his family is unique in that they choose not to drink human blood. Intelligent and witty, Edward sees straight into Bella's soul. Soon, they are swept up in a passionate, thrilling and unorthodox romance. To Edward, Bella is what he has waited 90 years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. But what will Edward & Bella do when a clan of new vampires - James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) - come to town and threaten to disrupt their way of life? (source: Twilight Official Website, http://www.twilightthemovie.com)

The story reminds me of Anne Rice's vampire sagas and of course, one of my favourite vampire movies is Queen of the Damned (starring the late Aaliyah). But it also reminds me of The Covenant where the story was about four handsome men who were wizards...eh, wait...that's wizards, not vampires.

Since a friend of mine recommended the book to me, so I'm going to read it FIRST before I watch the movie. Check out the trailer:

Alicia and Cynta's Saloon DAY

I had been thinking to re-perm my hair. Since I had so many bad experiences with hair saloons, I went saloon hunting a day before my birthday. So, I decided to try GRAND MILLENIUM HAIR SALOON, located at our trademark CKS, Nosoob Baru hahaha. I decided to try their eyebrow shaping service cos it's kinda cheap (RM5, and she even lined my eyes for free). At the end of the brief service, I began to enquire about the highlight (cos si Alicia mau highlight rambut dia) price as well as hair perm.

Mell (the hairstylist - looks cute herself, people say if you like the hairstylist's hair, then your hair will be treated nicely) told me that the highlight can begin as cheap as RM5 per "batang" (I guess, per streak...whatever you may call it) till rm120 for full head. As for hair perming, it ranges from rm80 to rm120 as well. But the perk is you will get two FREE treatment sessions worth RM31 each. So today, Alicia and I went back to the saloon and tried her services. Here's a peek of our after-session...

During Highlight...Al's head is full with aluminium foils

Al sans foils...tres chic! heehehe

Me with my "new" perm-do...hahahaha

If you like what you see ( I mean our hair!!), head up to Grand Milennium Hair Saloon, located at Plaza Grand Milennium, Nosoob Baru, Penampang.

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

WOOOHOOOO!!!!

I have lived 26 years at 12 midnight today.

Two days earlier, I decided that this year's birthday is going to be a different one. I promised to drag myself to do the things I would usually don't do (hope u get what it means). My typical birthday celebration would be me staying at home and watch Disney Channel, then at night I would go out with my friends to celebrate. Family? My celebration with my family is usually held during the weekends (except when my birthday falls on a weekend).

Although birthdays are usuallyhappy affairs, well how would I know that this year would be "different"? Hey, I didn't plan for today's event to unfold according to moi...see, I ain't a sitcom. But, today...18 November 2008 is one-of-a-kind.

Let me begin with 12 midnight, 18 November.

12midnight :

I wished myself a Happy Birthday and replied my sis-in-law text.
Wrote in my private journal.
Dad knocked at my door, to wake me up (but, I was awake) and to get ready cos Kung2 Johny had passed away (RIP Kung2!!)
My "birthday face"!

9am - 3pm
Woke up from a brief sleep and replied the SMSes I received from my friends and colleagues (awww, they remembered :-))
Turn on my laptop and login to Facebook - replied the messages on the Wall.
Dad told me to get ready to go to Kung2's wake at Tionghua Funeral Parlour.
Breakfast at Luyang - Roti Kawin (make that 4 pieces panggang ones...yummy!! Two half-boiled eggs and a cup of old-fashioned Kopi Susu)
After breakfast, Dad and I terlimpas kedai 4D and Dad asked whether to buy number or not. Bah, I said, I had my birthday today and Kung2 died oso today, so what the heck! That is one of the things I don't normally do on my birthday. So yeah, Dad conveniently asked me to go and buy...sudalah I never bought a lottery ticket in my life...I bought one line only that!! Mati2 my dad ketawa and he went and bought his (10 line kunun). Then, off we went to Tionghua Funeral Parlour at Mile 5.
7pm till now

My last minute dinner gathering!! Alicia and I decided on Country Grill as the venue. I wanted to do a karaoke-themed party but I think intimate settings and gathering are wayyyyyy better hehehe...anyway, I have never done a birthday party where the number of guests are small and the restaurant has a beautiful ambience and good service and cheap food! Guess what, I didn't even blow my budget there!! hahaha

Although I wanted to do things differently on my birthday this year, this is the part where I wanted to keep, if time and tide permit. I cherished the company I had that night. All our lawaks, laughter, spontaneous stories, you named it...all came out at the dinner table. Pus and Mel missed the "toast" when we toast for Felly's upcoming engagement and of course the toast for moi! But never mind...the fun begins right after hehe...I love the presents as well, so thoughtful and personal. It has always been like that, and I've always wanted a gathering like this. It was so lovely...by the way, the cake was also something out of the ordinary cos it was sponsored by...Mel and Pus! And the rest of the crowd in the restaurant supported and clapped when my friends belted out a bootleg, original version of Happy Birthday (and the background songs after Happy Birthday were mostly Christmas Songs!! Oh, Christmas thou art so near!)

All in all, my birthday is bliss!! And I loved every minute of it.

This blog post is dedicated to Kung2 Johny

Eternal rest grant upon him, O Lord, and may your perpetual light shine on him. Amen.
