Vintage Travel

The new challenge starts today at Frilly and Funkie and it is called Planes, Trains and Automobiles.  The lovely Kathy is our hostess and she describes it this way:

Summer is a great time to travel. For this challenge, create a vintage or shabby chic travel themed project. Think folded maps, cruise ships, road signs, compasses, passports, trains, planes or automobiles. As long as your project features a travel theme, you're headed in the right direction.

I have been admiring the tall and skinny cards that my team mate Jenny has been making lately and thought I would give one a try. She makes them look so easy but I took a while to come up with a design that I liked and that was flat enough to mail without having to rob a bank to pay for the postage.

I started with some cream card stock (Staples) for the blank and then added a panel of rusty red card stock (Bazzill), which was distressed and inked on the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink (Tim Holtz).  Pretty well everything on the card was distressed and inked in the same manner.

Next I took another piece of cream card stock and inked it all over with Aged Mahogany, Frayed Burlap and Vintage Photo Distress Oxide (Tim Holtz).  This time I spread them on using a very wet paint brush adding a colour at a time in random areas and then drying with a heat tool (Tim Holtz) before I added the next colour.

Once the panel was dry I added some stamping using Vintage Photo Distress Ink (Tim Holtz) and one of the Travel Mini Blueprint Stamps (Tim Holtz).

A panel of rust card stock (Recollections) came next.  It was embossed using a Gears embossing folder (Tim Holtz) and then the highlights were rubbed with Rich Copper Metallique Wax (Prima).

I cut a chevron from Memoranda paper (Tim Holtz) and added that next followed by a half circle of some map paper from the same paper pad.

Some venise lace was dyed with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and added to a smaller chevron cut from the Memoranda paper before the chevron was added to the card.

I used Versamark Embossing Ink and a pocket watch stamp (IndigoBlu) to stamp onto some acetate and then it was embossed with Copper Embossing Powder (Ranger).  I fussy cut the watch and added it next.

The lovely lady is from the Paper Dolls (Tim Holtz) and has been inked with Vintage Photo DI as were the clip art suitcase and the Small Talk Sticker (Tim Holtz).  A bit of Black Soot DI was added to the suitcase straps using a water brush (Tim Holtz)

Finally I altered an arrow (Tim Holtz) by coating it with a blend of Terra Cotta and Copper Mixative Alcohol Ink (Tim Holtz).

Vintage Travel

The new challenge starts today at Frilly and Funkie and the lovely Zoe is our hostess this time.  She calls this challenge Oh the places you'll go! and describes it this way:

"Create a vintage or shabby chic project with travel as the central theme. Think planes, trains, automobiles, ships, maps, globes."

I rarely have enough masculine cards ready to go so I took this opportunity to create one.  I started with some Tim Holtz Color Core card stock for the blank and then layered some paper from Tim Holtz Dapper pad with some Maja Design Vintage Autumn Basics.

I made one tag from the Maja Designs paper, one from a piece of Recollections kraft card stock, which was embossed with a folder from The Paper Studio called Vintage Keys that I picked up from a sale bin at Hobby Lobby on one of my too infrequent trips to visit my super friend Patti (a trip is on the horizon and I am sooooo excited - she is a fabulous lady and a wonderful crafter) - but I digress.  Finally I used some scrap card stock to make a tag that was stamped with the vintage dirigible from an Indigo Blu set called Grand Tour 1 using Tree Branch Archival Ink.

The sentiment is from Tim Holtz Simple Saying set and also stamped with Tree Branch AI.  Everything was distressed with my scissors and then inked with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink.

I tucked some burlap ribbon under the image tag after darkening it up by dying it with some Walnut Stain DI, added burlap string to all the tags.  Finally some gears, a button and a trinket pin were added.

While this isn't as frilly as usual, it is somewhat shabby and I think it has a great masculine and very vintage feel.  I would definitely use this as a birthday card because guys should be having fun as they move from year to year and life is a journey.

I am going to enter this card in the following challenges:

Penny Black and More - Anything Goes (must include hand stamping - no digis)
Allsorts  - Vintage
Moving Along With The Times - Man or Boy
The Male Room - Transport
Die Traumfabrik Dream Factory - Fast and Furious

Summer Dream

It is time for a new challenge at Frilly and Funkie and Nancy chose the theme and is calling this one It's Summer.  She wants everyone to let us know what you love about summer. Do you enjoy traveling, growing a garden, or laying on the beach? Create a vintage or shabby chic project, card, or layout showcasing what you enjoy most about this wonderful season.

I love to travel but this summer we are sticking pretty close to home because the exchange rates are through the roof.  That makes me sad so I decided to make a vintage travel-themed tag to cheer me up.  I remembered one I had seen here and thought I would CASE it although I don't speak French and there was no translator on her blog so I had to figure out how to re-create it on my own and then knowing me I had to give it a few extras.  Since it has a nautical spin to it, there is lots of blue involved.  I also think this would be great for a guy and think I will give it to my husband as a nudge to get him to change his mind about not traveling this year.  Stay tuned to see if it works :)

I started with one of the large manilla tags that Linda sells in the shop and added Broken China Distress Ink over a criss cross mask (the sections that were left when I made a stencil with my Cameo recently) and through a swirls stencil.  Next I took my natural sea sponge and dabbed Stormy Sky DI all over.  Finally I used Walnut Stain DI with a TCW called Mini Ledger to add some vintage text.

Next I cut the anchor and ship wheel from Grunge Paper with my Cameo.  I painted the wheel with Folk Art Coffee Bean acrylic paint and then scratched on some Deco Art Honey Brown with the tines of a fork.  I painted the anchor with Deco Art Rich Espresso Metallic paint and went over the chain with Folk Art Antique Gold acrylic paint.  I added some jute cord to the top of the anchor.

The map is from The Graphics Fairy and I converted it to sepia on my computer, lightly inked it with Broken China DI and then inked the edges with Walnut Stain.  The compass was a black and white freebie I found online and I converted the black to brown, printed it, fussy cut it and then inked it with Antique Linen DI and took Walnut Stain to the edges.

The sailboat is also from The Graphics Fairy and I fussy cut it and inked it with Antique Linen DI.  I realized after it was on the tag that I should have converted it to sepia - oops.  The text is computer generated and has been inked with Antique Linen DI and edged with Walnut Stain DI.  Finally I dyed some seam binding with Broken China and Stormy Sky DI.

I am going to enter my tag in the following challenges:

Monday-Mood-Board - Photo Inspiration
A Gem of a Challenge - Something Blue
Kreativeinkauf-challenge - Travel
Sparkles Forum - Vintage/Shabby Chic
Cheerful Stamp Pad - Travel to Faraway Places
Get Creative Challenges - For the Boys or Father's Day

Journey vs. Destination

The new challenge is starting today at Frilly and Funkie and this time Nancy is our hostess.  She wants us to make vintage or shabby chic projects that depict Vintage Travel

I decided to make another page for my art journal.  If you recall my New Year's resolution was to get to Paris this year so that is what my page focuses on.  I actually made this a few weeks ago at a time when my husband was on strike (certainly not his choice) so now because of the lost income and the horrible exchange rate this vacation has been put on hold.  I guess I will have to make that resolution again next year.

In the meantime, here are the details of my page:

I started by inking the page with Wild Honey Distress Ink and then adding some images from The Graphics Fairy and a few torn pieces of music paper from My Mind's Eye.  Then I dry brushed it with some Gesso and inked again lightly with Antique Linen Distress Ink.

The next step was to stencil the dots with some Olive Archival Ink through a Dylusions stencil.  Next I used some white Embossing paste with a Wendy Vecchi stencil to create the stripes and they automatically picked up some of the Wild Honey colour where the Gesso didn't completely cover it - unexpected but I love what it did.

The lady and her bicycle is from Indigo Blu and I stamped it with Jet Black Archival Ink and then inked with some Old Paper Distress Ink.  The Paris and Eiffel Tower images are from Stampabilities and were stamped with more Jet Black Archival Ink.  The sentiment was done on my computer and after I doodled some boxes around each word, I also inked them with Old Paper DI.

The chipboard Fleur de Lis was a gift and was coloured with Olive Archival Ink.  The large rosette was made with some Melissa Frances ribbon and a pearl brad that I coloured with a Copic marker was added as a centre.

The flowers were made with a punch from Marvy Uchida, stamped with the Wendy Vecchi Vintage Wallpaper Background Stamp using Orange Blossom Archival Ink and then shaped before I added some Making Memories brads for centres.  The leaves were cut with my Cameo.

The filigree flower motif was bronze but I coloured it with a mixture of alcohol inks - Meadow, Honeycomb, Gold Mixative and Snow Cap Mixative.  Finally I added a Prima button and a couple strips of venise lace.

I am going enter this project in the following challenges:

Tuesday Throwdown - Other Than a Card or Tag
Card Mania - Vacation/Travel
Ooh-La-La-creations - Vintage
Crafting When We Can - Make Your Own Background
Open-minded Crafting Fun - Vacation

Vintage Travel

The challenge this week at Sugar Creek Hollow is called VINTAGE TRAVEL.  Your vintage or shabby chic card can be all about about vintage means of transportation or even traveling somewhere on vacation, vintage style.

This monochromatic card was fun to make even though it took me almost a week to make it.  Well not really, but I did start it last Sunday and then it sat in pieces on my desk until last night.  I have come out of retirement to look after my Son-in-Law's books and while it will eventually be a part-time job, right now it is more than full-time and it sure is interfering with my crafting time.

I am going to enter this card in the following challenges:

It's All About the Vintage - Doilies
Pixie Dust Studio - Vintage
My Heart Pieces - Use Designer Paper
Creative Belli - Vacation/Travel
Shopping Our Stash - Monochromatic
Bunny Zoe's Crafts - Swirls & Lace
Craft Your Passion - Anything Goes
There's Magic in the Air - Doilies
