Feather Your Nest

I've been sending sneaky peeks and random feather photos out into the universe for a few weeks now.

When I came up with the original idea for my Feather Your Nest exhibition piece, I started making lots and lots of little feathers....

.... and then when I put that idea together, it just didn't work at all. It made no sense. No-one would have been able to work out what on earth I was trying to convey.

So then I changed it up completely and did lots and lots and lots of green stitching...

...and then hand stitched all of these little feathers into place to create...

Bird on a Fly Wire

The exhibition opens tonight and runs for the entire month of August.

It's also a satellite event of Craft Victoria's Craft Cubed Festival! There'll be lots of exciting exhibitions, open studios, and workshops to visit as part of this years festival.

The Frooch

I dropped off my Feather Your Nest exhibition piece at Gleaners Inc yesterday, along with some of my lovely new Frooches (thanks for the hilarious name Michelle)!

Photo blatantly stolen from Liz's Instagram Feed (@missbettyjo)

Liz just happened to glean this old bird cage on her way to work that morning. Serendipity? Fate? 'Tis a match made in feathery heaven.

I also stocked up on Nikki's You Sew Girl Patterns while I was out and about, including the Fedora which was featured in The Age on Saturday.

It's not long 'til I can reveal my finished MasterFeatherpiece

PS - You can also find Frooches in the shop!

A final sneaky peek

I'm terrible at surprises. Especially terrible when I'm so excited about something I'm making.

But, I've promised myself that this will be the final sneaky peek of my Feather Your Nest exhibiton piece.

My original idea didn't work (ie. it looked like crap and made no sense once put together), so I've changed it, and fingers crossed, it will all work out.

Now I just need to work out whether I've made enough feathers...

Feathered

Oh wow, how time is literally flying by at the moment... feathers and all!

I'm still madly stitching feathers for the upcoming Feather Your Nest Exhibition at Gleaners Inc, but I've set a few aside to make the very first teeny tiny batch of Embroidered Feather Brooches.

I tested out the first prototype sample a couple of weeks ago and I've been wearing it ever since.

Here's Frances modelling to give you an idea of the size... these one's are in my shop.

I'm sending my poor little sewing machine off to the Day Spa thisafternoon. I'll miss her while she's gone. Thank goodness I have a spare machine, just in case of a sewing emergency.

Feathering My Nest

Hallelujah the lurgy is gone and I've switched the sewing machine the back on!

Which brings me to the next thing on my agenda...

The upcoming Feather Your Nest exhibition at Gleaners Inc.

The following info is from the Gleaners Inc blog.

Here are some important details about Gleaners Inc.'s next exhibition entitled "Feather Your Nest".

  • The show opens on Friday August 3rd at 5.30 pm. We will have drinks and nibbles and discount shopping on the night!

  • The theme of the show is "Feather your Nest". Creatives are invited to interpret this common idiom in their own way and either create a unique piece or submit a previous work that  references the theme.

  • Both 2D and 3D work will be accepted

  • Please remember that the space is quite small, so keep this in mind when creating your masterpiece.

  • Please email Liz at gleanersinc@gmail.com to submit your work . It can be an expression of interest with your idea, pictures of your past work or an image of the piece you wish to submit.

  • All work for the show is to be delivered to Gleaners Inc. by Friday July 27th. If you are out of town email Liz for the mailing address.

  • All work can be for sale. The gallery will take a commission on all sales in the vicinity of 25%, so price your work accordingly.

  • We have decided  to avoid  commercially produced feathers in any artwork. "Windfalls" or naturally shed feathers are fine.

  • After the roaring success of the "You say Doyley, I say Doily" show in March , this coming event should not be missed!

  • Go forth and start Nesting! Any other questions, just ask Liz.
