A gift for Lily

I finally made a choice on the fabrics, and whipped up a little welcome gift for baby Lily.

Some muted pinks mixed with lots of white - I think Lily's mum will like them. I couldn't resist the cute little piggies that I bought from the Retromummy Shop.

I can hear the rain pouring down on my tin roof - what a lovely noise..... happy Monday.

My creative space

My creative space is all about the fabric choices today.

One of my girlfriends had a little baby girl yesterday named Lily, so I'm whipping up a little bib and blankie combo as a gift..... hmmmm, I just need to decide what to use.

My Creative Space

Not much creativity in my space this week. This is the remnants of the baby card that I managed to whip up for my girlfriend who had a little girl named Cate last Wednesday. She was two weeks earlier than expected, but luckily, I already had some handmade baby girl pressies pre-prepared in the stash for just such an occassion.

I gave her a cute little flannel buggy wrap and some sweet little bibs in girlie prints. Once I'm settled, I'm going to attempt a patchwork floor rug. Does anyone have any tips for making these? I'm thinking of doing a cotton patchwork top, maybe a couple of polar fleece layers in the middle, but then I'm not quite sure whether I should just use cotton for the bottom layer. I just need to keep in mind that it must be really easy to wash and dry.

For lots more creativity, visit Kirsty and play along...

Honest opinions needed - more options added

I have a dilemma.

One of my girlfriends is due to give birth to her second baby at the end of next month, and she doesn't know whether she's having a boy or a girl.

After she had her first baby (a little boy), she bought this Michael Miller clown fabric, and the red spots, and some blue checks with the intention of making something for him.
She never got around to using it, so she gave it to me instead, assuming that I would use it to make something for my nephews.

Luckily for me, she doesn't read the blog as she's not much of an internet gal, so I'm safe in blogging about her surprise pressie..... and what I'm really planning on making with it.

My dilemma is making fabric selections for a baby quilt that is gender neutral. I have absolutely no problem in co-ordinating fabrics for boys or for girls..... but when it comes to making it unspecific, confusion sets in.

I'm starting with the clowns, the red spots, and the green checks.

Then I added a blue and green spot.....

....and then a really light blue check

Would this really suit a boy or a girl, or does the addition of the blue make it too boyish?

Updated:

This is what I love about the internet. I've got some fantastic suggestions.... and quick as a flash!

So this is another option - Clowns, Yellow, Blue & Red

Or Clowns, Yellow, Green and Red

or Clowns, Yellow, Black Stripes, and red.

Introducing......

......my new baby nephews, Noah and Zane.

Earlier in the day, they were wrapped in the matching blankies that I made, but one was already christened with baby vomit by the time we managed to snap a photo of them together...

Now I have six nephews.....a basketball team including a sub!

Babies, Babies Babies

Has anyone else noticed the baby boom that is happening at the moment? Everyone I know has either just had a baby or is pregnant. Lucky I like sewing things for babies and making handmade gifts.

This is a quilt that I made in October last year for my nephew (who was born in November). He absolutely loves it, so my sister-in-law asked me to make another for him so that she has a spare.

Even though he's only 3 months old, I thought I would make one that would last a bit longer and still suit him when he's a toddler. I started yesterday cutting out all of the equal squares. Today I sewed the squares into strips and decided that I didn't like the squares after all, so I cut all the strips in half again so that I had strips of rectangles.

Then after I laid out all the strips of rectangles, I still didn't like it so I ended up sewing the strips together unevenly on purpose. Now everything is a bit off kilter and I quite like it. It wasn't quite wide enough so I just added long strips of corduroy along both sides. The prints and the red fabric are from my stash, and the denim and corduroy are from my op-shop spree on Tuesday. Apologies for the crappy photos but it was a miserable day today so the light isn't very good. I'm hoping to finish this off tomorrow (along with the top that I started earlier in the week and never finished).

In other news, my sister (who already has 3 boys in the family) is pregnant with twins, and suprise suprise, they are both boys! She wants some bibs that are suitable for small babies so I took an existing bib (on the left), made a pattern from cardboard, and copied it. I just used a cotton print on the front, plain flannel for the back, and added a snap.

This is number one........ only about fifty more to go......

Then maybe the twins would like a quilt each............
