Kick Off Time for Eileen Hull's Christmas Journaling Event!

We need some fun in our lives so all of us at Eileen Hull Designs put our heads together and came up with an event that you can participate in as much or as little as you'd like. It's a challenge of sorts and we'd like to see you to make a Holiday Journal for this season using any of Eileen Hull Design's book dies. Your journal could include activities, photos, recipes, shopping lists, daily thoughts, etc. Really, it can include anything you want; after all, it's your journal!
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between November 27th and December 23rd there will be a post in the Eileen Hull Fan Club from one of Eileen's team members with a prompt for a journal page. These prompts are meant to get your creative thoughts flowing and give you page ideas for your Holiday Journal. It might be in the form of a blog post, Facebook Live, recorded quick video, or a Facebook post in the group. It's up to you to take it from there and we can't wait to see what you come up with, so please share your covers and pages with us in the Eileen Hull Fan Club.
Today it's Day 1 and I'm sharing the journal cover that I made for the event. I can't wait to fill it up with Christmas goodies and share some prompts with you too.

I used Eileen's XL Journal Die for my cover base. Delving into my stash, I used a ton of Tim Holtz media, stamps, dies and Idea-ology ephemera to decorate it! (I have quite a *ahem* collection lol.)

Angelic Journal with Eileen Hull

Merry Christmas!! I am astounded that Christmas is only two weeks away. How the heck did that happen? We are still in the middle of decorating our tree! Hopefully I'll still have time to make the other Christmas themed projects I have in mind but at least I can share this one with you now:

Inside view (I used pre-made inserts for the signatures that I embellished):

I didn't do a tutorial for this project but here is a peek of just the cover, outside and inside:

I used a ton of Distress Oxide inks on the cover here as well as Texture Paste through a stencil with gold embossing powder added to the top of it.

I covered the inside of the cover with pages from an old hymnal, then stamped and inked over the top.

Thanks for stopping by! Check out Eileen's blog and if you are not already a member, join the Facebook Eileen Hull Fan Club group. It is a warm, supportive group with lots of inspiration and sharing going on. You'll just have to answer a few simple questions when asking to join (to keep out spammers) and then you'll be added. ;-)

Also, I was going to submit this to the December Mini Album Makers Challenge and forgot!! Remedying that now. ;-) Check out their challenge. There is always a wealth of inspiration there to see!

Craft Stamper Magazine

Happy Monday!! This week is an exciting week! Not only do I get to head off to Creativation on Wednesday (eeeeeek! first time!), I am fortunate to be published in the latest issue of Craft Stamper magazine! Several of us on Eileen Hull's Inspiration Team have projects in it using Eileen's fab Sizzix journal dies! The project on the front is one by Anne Redfern.

Anne is a cover girl! Go Anne!

I can only show you a sneak peek of my journal. You'll have to buy the magazine to see the whole thing. ;-) Next month though I will be able to share it here on the blog. So for now…

It's a little sneak peek!

Have a wonderful week and check out Craft Stamper's site. There is lots of online content for you to peruse. Also, if you are not already a member, join the Facebook Eileen Hull Fan Club group. It is a warm, supportive group with lots of inspiration and sharing going on. You'll just have to answer a few simple questions when asking to join (to keep out spammers) and then you'll be added. There will be lots of action there later this week when Creativation 2019 kicks off. You'll see Eileen's new releases and probably a lot of behind the scenes and shenanigans. ;-)

Halloween Eileen Hull Journal

Hello and Happy Halloween!! I have a final treat for you today; no tricks I promise! I whipped up a spooktacular little book using Eileen Hull's ever so versatile Journal Die and lots of Tim Holtz dies and stamps.

BOO!!

The journal covers I first colored with multiple colors of Distress Oxide Inks in yellows, oranges and greens. I really love how the Oxides blend and react with water. Spritzing, sprinkling and dabbing got me the texture I desired. For the front cover overlay, I cut a piece of mixed media paper to fit so it was inset a bit from the edges. I used black, purple and grey inks to blend the background and make it gradate from dark to light. The Tim Holtz Stamping Platform made it easy to position the haunted house, tree etc. stamps and ensure even stamping coverage. I then cut the eyes and word out with the Frightening Faces and Alphanumeric, Cutout Lower die sets before glueing it onto the journal front.

The back has stamping and a cutout from the Cobweb die for embellishment.

Thanks for stopping by. Be sure to visit Eileen's blog and check out the other posts for this month! All month the Inspiration Team has been sharing fall and Halloween projects. =) I am also adding this journal to the October Mini Album Makers Challenge.

Guest Post at Mini Album Makers!

Hello there! Long, long ago…(like a year ago) I was able to witness a stupendous, wonderful and awe-inspiring event… The Great American Eclipse - exactly one year ago today. I had wanted to create a special journal filled with memories and photos from that trip. The cover I made last year (see it here) and in honor of the one year anniversary, I finished all the insides! It is chock full of photos, journalling, ephemera and total eclipse information! If you would like to see, better head on over to the Mini Album Makers blog where I have a guest post with tutorial.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!

Frilly & Funkie Challenge

Hello there and happy Monday! ;-) I created this journal project for the current Frilly & Funkie Challenge, A Neutral Point of View. It was fun to work only with neutral colors, in this case mostly browns and tans.

I used Eileen Hull's popular Sizzix Journal Die to cut the covers for my traveler's style notebook. I didn't make my own insert this time but used these which can be found on amazon.

For the base color, I spritzed Antique Linen and Tarnished Brass Distress Stain onto my craft sheet and  smooshed the journal covers around in it. It has a nice shimmer that you can't really see in the photo. I used my oval die to make an oval shaped stencil to paint the tan oval in the middle of the cover. When it was dry, I used different acrylic paint colors and the Cutout Floral foam stamps to stamp around the edges.

Some stamping, Paper Dolls and Snarky Stickers completed the look! This would make a great gift.

Thanks for stopping by! There is always something going on behind the scenes here so stay tuned for more projects soon.

I am also entering this in the May Mini Album Makers Challenge. Be sure to check them out too!

May Challenge at Mixed Media Monthly!

Good morning and happy May! April showers bring… rust? Ha ha, it just might. ;-) We want to see projects using rusty colors, faux rust techniques, rust mediums – any or all of the above. You can see all the details and projects from the design team on the Mixed Media Monthly challenge post.

Image may contain: text

Our sponsor this month is Emerald Creek, creator of unique embossing powders and other cool crafty supplies. They very kindly sent some of their embossing powders, including the Baked Texture powder Chunky Rust, to the design team so we could give them a try on our projects.

I created a junk journal with Eileen Hull's Journal Die to hold my collection of art mail I've received from all my ATC trading.

Check out that rust on the metal tag! ;-)

The focal image is a stamp from a Lynne Perrella set from Paper Artsy. I stamped it on Mixed Media Heavystock, watercolored it, and then embossed layers of Vintage Beeswax powder over the top. It's mounted on a cardstock tag that I covered with metal foil tape and distressed with paint and Chunky Rust embossing powder.

back of journal

I covered mat board with adhesive backed cloth paper and then cut the covers out of it with the Journal Die. After that I used a brayer to apply a bit of Fresco paint to the covers and also used the paint to stencil. When the paint was dry I used various Distress Spray Stains to spritz all over the front and then stamped with archival ink.

Check out that Chunky Rust covered plane!

Let's take a peek at the inside:

My "flyleaf envelope" has Viva Rusty Paper paint on it with a stenciled
design over it embossed with Ancient Amber powder.

I love all the bright envelopes. Happy mail indeed!

Here's a bit more "how to"…

Inside covers with elastic binding.

I knew my art envelopes were going to be bulky (and I have a large stack of them!) so I made this journal extra thick. Normally you overlap part of the spine and glue it so you can have either two or three signatures fastened into the cover. I butted the spine edges together and glued an extra piece of mat board I had cut over the inside of the spine to hold it all together. I then used my Crop-o-dile tool to punch through the extra mat board piece so I could string my elastic binding to hold four signatures.

I made four "stubby" signatures of six sheets of light cardstock each. They slide easily under the elastic binding.

I used a "stubby" page as a tab to slide into each envelope (a little glue kept the envelope in place). I just used pointy scissors to trim down each page to fit into the envelope if it was a smaller one. I actually ended up not using one of my signatures in the middle because the whole journal was getting so fat! I was still able to incorporate many of my art envies though.

Thanks for stopping by and making it through my loooong post! Be sure to head on over to the MMM Challenge post and check out what the design team has been up to! Join in the challenge and you'll be in the running to win our sponsor prize!

I am also adding this to the May challenge over at Mini Album Makers. Check out what their design team made for it! Awesome stuff as always. =)

Mixed Media Monthly March Madness!

I mean Challenge! ;-) I just couldn't resist the alliteration ha ha. Anyway, welcome to March and another fun challenge over at the Mixed Media Monthly blog.

Image may contain: text

This month we'd like to see you use a stencil and at least three different mediums in your project. Be sure to tell us which ones you use! Our sponsor this month is Marabu and they very generously sent the design team some of their products to play with. Here is what I received:

I created a journal using Eileen Hull's Sizzix Journal Die!

I love the bright colors!

I made a closure from sari silk ribbon.

I used the Marabu bird stencil again to decorate the cover to the first signature:

Now for a quick tutorial about how this all came together!

Step 1 - First I covered my die cut Journal covers with some Tim Holtz Tissue Wrap:

I also covered the insides of the covers with some pages I cut out of a bird identification book.

Step 2 - I covered the Tissue Wrap with a light coat of gesso. I then sprayed the stencil with the red Art Spray (permanent when dry) and used it to make a monoprint on the front. Once that was dry, I used the Vanilla Acryl Mousse paint (it's dimensional!!) and the stencil to add the details.

Step 3 - I continued to add layers of misting and monoprinting. I also swiped on some areas of Mousse paint and then sprinkled yellow embossing over the wet paint. When it was dry, I embossed it! It adds a nice accent of color. Stamping with archival ink added more visual texture as well. This picture doesn't show it yet, but the last step was using black and white gel pens and the Art Crayon to add detail.

I also used the Art Spray to dye some white linen scalloped trim I had in my stash as well as pulling out some vintage eyelet trim to add along the bottom.

Step 4 - After gluing the covers together along the spine, I was ready to add the elastic binding. Using elastic makes it super easy to add in your signatures. All you have to do is open up the signature and slide one half under the elastic so it's running down the center fold. Easy peasy! You can also make up this Journal die to hold three signatures – I only wanted room for two in this one.

Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to head on over to the Challenge post and check out what the design team has been up to! Join in the challenge and you'll be in the running to win a prize pack!

I am also adding this to the March challenge over at Mini Album Makers. Check out what their design team made for it! Gorgeous work. =)

Magic in Fall Junk Journal

Hello there. I'm getting in a last autumnal hurrah before I dive headfirst into Christmas crafting! I spent this fall searching out and taking photos of all the beautiful colors changing around me. Fall is my favorite season and this year it was wonderful! I created a journal to hold all my photographic memories using Eileen Hull's Journal Die and a whole bunch of fall themed stamps and other goodies. Let's take a look!

The cover is covered with plaid wool fabric in fall covers. A removable elastic strap helps hold it closed since it is bursting with photos and ephemera!

here is a video flip though:

… and a few still shots of the interior pages!

I used Ranger Distress Collage Medium to glue the fabric to the mat board before I cut out the cover. It was dry enough that it didn't soak through the fabric and adhered it firmly.

Fall always makes me think of pumpkin spice lattes! Yum!

I took photos of our porch Halloween decorations. We grew most of the pumpkins in our garden. =)

There was a farm produce stand down the road from us that had an impressive display of cool pumpkins!

The leaves in our neighborhood were so gorgeous!

I got some fabulous photos of the Boise River. This is one of my favorites!

We had a field trip to the Botanical Gardens and that was lovely. I can't wait to go back in the spring and see all the flowers.

Thank you for stopping by and for all those here in the USA, I wish you a happy Thanksgiving!
