EXCLUSIVE: 65mm Filmstrip Reveals First Look At Philip Seymour Hoffman As ‘The Master'; Film Still Being Edited

Just when you thought your May 15th was going to come and go without a kick: We here at the Vines can pass along the first official update on The Master direct from Paul Thomas Anderson as well as the first image of the film, kind of...the floor is yours, sir:

CJ -
good evening.  it's been so long
and you've been so patient, thought
i'd fill you in on where we're
at with it now:

These shots include our lovely
Negative Cutter, Simone, imported
all the way from France to cut 65mm
negative.   She does it all with a pair
of scissors from Staples.
I'll have more to share in the
coming days/weeks/months.  Hope
you're well. Thank you for all the support.
See you soon.
paul.

And, because hitting CTRL + OPTION + APPLE + 8 takes alot of effort, I have close cropped the 65" filmstrip and reversed/color corrected it into an educated guess at the look. The image appears to be a Phil Hoffman as the Master.

So it seems the film is still being worked on, or these were archival images to get you pre-heated for whatever is dropping next, which you will find here first. Follow us on Twitter and we'll warn you ahead of time about things and reward you in various ways.

Boogie Nights Opening Steadicam Map

While we wait for The Playlist to tell everyone what's happening next with The Master, I thought I would highlight this illustration from Empire Magazine which gives a mini graphical play-by-play of the nearly 3 minute continuous shot that opens Boogie Nights.

Gloucester House Rentals Puts Up Maya, PTA

We stumbled upon the Gloucester Housing Rentals in Massachusetts website while looking for photos for the site and they seem to be pretty happy about their semi-recent celebrity guests complete with photo evidence.

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

Here's a still from a scene that you won't see on the new Magnolia DVD. It's the scene with Stanley, Dixon & the Worm in the diner. It appears that the deleted scenes on the Magnolia DVD will focus on Frank "TJ" Mackey. I would love to see the extended Jason Robards monologue & the Worm subplot, but it's not meant to be.......
Here's the picture that Vanity Fair did on PTA in the Special Hollywood Issue this past April.

De Luca named Variety Showman of the Year!
Mike De Luca, President of Production for New Line Cinema was named Variety's Annual Showman of the Year. Previous honorees include Michael Eisner, Michael Crichton, Robert Wright, and Jim Carrey.
Here are Paul's comments on New Line and Mike:
Paul Thomas Anderson, writer-director of Boogie Nights puts it bluntly, "I go where Mike goes. He lets me do what I want to do but, he can also guide me away from some self-inflicted wounds I might cause." Studios have suggestions, but "if you're an egotistical filmmaker like myself you don't want to listen."
As for what sets Michael De Luca apart: "I really haven't dealt with that many other studio execs. I've met a few of them and I wouldn't want them to have my home phone number. But Mike does.
"Everybody in Hollywood rushes to give their opinion and he doesn't do that. What he can do is not say a lot and keep his mouth shut and let you discover it. I would prefer to not make movies anywhere else and I think there's a lot of people who feel the same way."
